Chapter 77: Scrambled Feelings
"This is going to be way too salty," Serena muttered, eyeing the heaping teaspoon of salt in her hand.
"It won’t be," Aiden said casually, watching her with a smirk. "Once you add everything else, it’ll be perfect."
Serena shot him a skeptical look over her shoulder. "Are you sure? I don’t want you to get high blood pressure and die just because you’re too salty."
Aiden grinned, his voice dropping into a teasing tone. "Oh, I’m salty? When exactly did you taste me?"
Serena froze for a second, her hands pausing over the bowl. She felt heat rise up her neck but quickly went back to mixing the tofu, trying to play it cool. "I was talking about the food, obviously," she said, though her voice was a bit flustered. "And you know that’s not what I meant."
Aiden’s grin grew wider, but Serena quickly added, "Fine, if you want to risk a salt overdose, that’s on you."
She finished stirring the mixture and scooped a bit with her fingers. "Here, try it."
Expecting him to take it from her hand, she held it out. But instead, Aiden caught her wrist gently and brought her fingers straight to his mouth. Serena’s heart skipped a beat as his lips brushed against her fingers, warm and soft, tasting the food. The unexpected closeness sent a jolt through her, and her breath hitched.
Her eyes widened as she tried to pull her hand back, but Aiden held her wrist just a moment longer, his lips lingering on her skin before he let go. She quickly dropped her hand, her pulse racing.
"Well?" she asked, her voice a little quieter, not quite meeting his eyes.
Aiden slowly licked his lips, his gaze locked on hers. "Perfect," he said in a low voice. "Just the right amount of salt."
Before she could react, Aiden scooped up more of the mixture, holding it up to her lips this time. His eyes held a challenge, daring her to take it from him.
Serena blinked, her breath catching again. She meant to do it herself, to stay in control, but now he was the one leading. She couldn’t back down.
Her lips parted, and she leaned forward, closing the distance, holding his gaze with a challenge of her own. Did he really think he could make her back down. His fingers brushed against her mouth as she tasted the food, but all she could feel was the spark between them, the way the air felt heavy and charged.
For a long moment, neither of them moved, the tension hanging in the air between them. But she was not about to back down, as the food left his fingers, she made it a point to lick a little of his flesh as well.
And then she moved back and nodded," Hmm... You’re not too salty... and neither is the tofu."
With that, Serena turned back to the stove to prepare the tofu and hide her own red face. She was tempted to pat her cheeks to calm herself down but could only hide it as she grabbed a pot. Filling it up with water, she quickly set it to boil before getting a pan to cook the scrambled tofu.
As she added the into the skillet pan and readied to add the mixture, she suddenly felt a presence behind her. She stillled but dared not turn her head to look at him. She was sure he was standing too close to her..
She felt his hand move and almost jumped, wondering if he was going to hold her but he simply turned down the flame and explained," I’ll stand here for a better view. And, for next time, you add the mixture slowly to the skillet or you’ll end up with hot butter on your hands.
Serena swallowed hard, nodding as she followed his instruction and carefully added the mixture to the sizzling butter. However, she was hyper-aware of his presence—how his arm brushed against hers, the warmth of his breath against her neck. Her heartbeat picked up speed, but she kept her eyes on the pan, pretending to be completely focused on cooking.
Why did she feel as if he was the only one around her. Everything seemed to fade away. And then, he held her hand over the wooden spoon, changing the way she was stirring the mixture. "This is how you do it so that it cooks evenly."
Her eves flickered to where he was holding her hand and she gulped. Why did his wrist look so... hot? The way his grip felt both firm and careful stirred something inside her she wasn’t sure she was ready to confront. The heat from the stove was nothing compared to the warmth radiating from him, pressing lightly against her back, close enough to feel but not quite touching. Her heartbeat quickened, and the soft scrape of the spoon against the pan seemed too loud in the quiet kitchen.
All too soon, he pulled back his hand and moved away," Here, it’s almost done. I’ll get the bowls. Don’t let it burn. And you turn off the heat."
Finally able to breath, Serena turned her head slightly to watch him from the corner of her eyes before making a face.. ’turn off the heat... as if she was the one who’s turned up the heat when he was the one who was..." As he placed the bowls in front of her, she realized he meant the food...
Rolling her eyes at her own imagination, Serena quickly added the instant noodled and tofu to the two bowls before carrying it to the table with a sense of accomplishment. She’d been tortured while making this meal, sure. But she’d learnt to make something today!
Feeling a quick pang of hungerm she hurriedly sat down and rubbed her hands together in excitement. "Come on come on! Let’s dive in!"
Watching her in amusement, Aiden shook his head and prepared to eat the simple meal... at least he was not being fed now... Though he was tempted to pout and complain that she was supposed to feed him...
