Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband
Chapter 76: Forgotten

Chapter 76: Forgotten

Aiden returned home troubled. Just yesterday, he’d made sure that both Owen and the other woman had been safe in the hospital. They were people he’d risked his life to save. And in the end, someone had still killed them?

According to the detective, someone had pushed poison into their IVs and they suspected it was the same person who had tried to hurt her, which meant that Serena’s life was in danger. The realization sent a chill through him.

Thankfully, to protect her identity, the detective had buried all information about their presence at the site. The 911 recording had been changed to identify the reporter of the incident as only a passerby. It was a smart move, but Aiden knew it wouldn’t hold the threat at bay forever.

But what the immediate problem was not that she was in danger. But how was he supposed to tell her about Owen. He’d seen the pictures and heard the entire story that Owen had told her, shocking him. It was astounding. So, if she was in love with Owen then what was her relation to Sidney? Because, he knew that Sidney was still looking for her.

Lost in thought, he was startled by a sharp, burnt smell wafting through the air. Instantly, his heart leaped in panic. Something was wrong. As visions of a fire burning down the house and hurting Serena and other worst possibilities, rushed through his head, he followed the smoke and rushed towards the kitchen, only to stop short at the sight before him.

There, standing in front of the stove with an expression of pure horror, was Serena. On the table, a charred mass of what could have once been a chicken lay in ruins, smoke curling up from the remains.

She glanced up at him, biting her lip, and then—unexpectedly—gave him a sheepish smile. "I think I might have overcooked it... a little," she admitted, her voice a mix of embarrassment and humor.

"A little?" Aiden repeated, his brow lifting as he stepped cautiously into the kitchen. He winced as he took in the chaotic scene—vegetables strewn across the counter, half-cut, half-burnt, pots and pans haphazardly scattered about. "Why does the kitchen look like a tornado swept through it?"

Serena shrugged, attempting a serious smile. "Maybe it did? Tornadoes can be dangerous, right?"

Aiden shot her a sardonic look. "I doubt a tornado would only target the kitchen," he remarked dryly.

Serena let out a small laugh, clearly embarrassed, and scrunched her nose up at him, and he wondered how a grown woman could look so cute while she said, "Okay, okay, I admit it. I was trying to cook. With your hand out of commission, I thought I’d take a crack at making dinner... but the vegetables and the chicken aren’t being very cooperative."

Aiden raised his eyebrows in mock surprise. "Really? The chicken didn’t jump out of the oven when it was done?"

Serena chuckled, though she still looked flustered, and shook her head. "Nope. The chicken decided it was better off becoming charcoal."

You know, you could have just asked the servants to cook, or we could’ve ordered takeout." Aiden pointed out.

Serena’s smile faltered, replaced by a look of disappointment as her eyes drifted to the burnt mess on the table. "Yeah, I guess we could’ve..." she murmured, clearly disheartened.

Seeing her look, Aiden felt a pang of guilt. He did not like that look on her. With a sigh, he offered," "How about this: you clean up, and I’ll make us something edible."

"You can’t," she pointed out. "Your hand’s injured. You’re in no condition to cook."

Aiden raised his injured hand slightly in acknowledgment but wasn’t ready to give up. "Well, I can manage," But before he could insist, Serena said," How about you teach me instead? Show me how to make something simple, something we can eat right away that won’t end in flames."

Aiden hesitated, eyeing her warily. "Are you sure you’re ready for another round in the kitchen?"

Serena grinned, stepping closer. "Come on. You can walk me through it. Something foolproof—so I don’t burn the place down. We don’t want to use any more fire extinguishers. Or you might become crippled."

Aiden sighed and shook his head. She wasn’t going to let him live that down. " Fine, we’ll make some instant noodles..."

Serena frowned," That is not the same as cooking something..."

"Relax. And you’re going to whip us some tofu scramble to go with it. Okay? So, get to work."

"Yes, teacher! Do you want to freshen up before helping me?"

With a sigh, Aiden nodded," Yep. I’ll go and do that while you clean up this mess."

As he nodded and turned around, Serena called out, "Stop." As he stopped, she came close to him, and stood with her hands on her hips, " Aiden... we are going to have this for dinner, right?" Aiden nodded and then stumbled back as her hands came to him tie, loosening it.

She glared at him when he stepped back and said," It will take you an hour to wriggle out of these clothes on your own. And I am really hungry. So just stand still, will you?"

Aiden stood still as she untied his tie and then, when he would have moved away, her hands slid under his jacket, pushing it off his shoulders. As her hands traced his shoulders and biceps, Aiden felt his heart thud loudly.

Before he knew it, she’d taken off his jacket and undone his shirt buttons and was already back to cleaning the kitchen. Feeling off about the entire matter, and disappointed because she’d stepped away too soon, Aiden returned to his room.

But he did not go to freshen up. Instead he went to sit on his bed and patted his chest where his heart was still thundering like he was having a heart attack. What the hell had he just felt? Why had he wanted her hands on him to linger longer. He knew the answer of course. He was attracted to her, but why did this attraction come up so forcefully so suddenly?
