Chapter 50: No answer

Finally giving up on sleep, Aiden swung his legs out of bed, rubbing a hand over his face. He decided to head to her room, determined to have a quick talk and then return to bed. Better to have the discussion and then sleep.

He reached her door and knocked softly at first, then a little harder when there was no response. "Serena?" he called out, keeping his voice low to avoid alerting anyonr else.. Silence. Aiden frowned, knocking again, this time with more force. Still nothing.

His mind raced. Was she avoiding him? After this evening, coud it be that she did not know how to respond and had decided to lie low? Curling his lips, he shook his head and walked away.

Moments later, spare key in hand, he unlocked the door and stepped inside, knocking one last time before entering. However, the moment he stepped inside, he stilled, immediately sensing that something was off. For the room was empty.

Could it be that she too had not been able to fall asleed and thus decided to go out? He turned on his heel, ready to go look for her but then paused suddenly. The carpet around the bed, usually immaculate, bore faint marks—footprints. Walking to them, he bent down, and examined them more closely. Two distinct sets of prints marred the fabric. One was smaller, unmistakably Serena’s. But the other was larger, heavier, and clearly made by someone wearing shoes.

"Who had been in her room? And why?"

Standing up, Aiden’s muscles tensed as he scanned the room for anything out of place. Nothing appeared disturbed or out of order, yet the footprints told a different story. Someone had been here that was for sure.

Not one to waste time, he hurriedly walked back to his room and grabbed his cell phone. After the fiasco last time, he’d already had the GPS installed into her wedding ring.

Aiden’s fingers moved swiftly over his phone as he activated the tracking app, his heart thudding in his chest. He’d been gone for thirty minutes so even if someone has dared to take her, they shouldn’t have gone far. The screen flickered to life, and he breathed a sigh of relief when Serena’s location appeared. But his relief was short-lived as his eyes narrowed on the blinking dot.

She was still in the house, but in a wing she had no reason to be in. His frown deepened as he glanced back at the footprints on the carpet, a gnawing suspicion taking root. Could it be that she too had been...

Without wasting another second, Aiden bolted from the room, his strides long and purposeful as he made his way toward the forbidden wing. His thoughts raced, each step fueling his growing unease. Why would she be there? And whatever the reason, he needed to bring her back.

As he approached the entrance, he was suddenly confronted by a familiar figure— his stepmother. She stood in the doorway, her posture rigid, an almost cruel smile playing on her lips.

"Going somewhere, Aiden?" Milli’s voice dripped with false sweetness, her eyes narrowing as she took a step forward, blocking his path.

"Out of my way," Aiden snapped, his patience already wearing thin. He made a move to sidestep her, but she shifted, blocking him again.

"Now, now," she tutted, her tone condescending. "You know this is our side of the house, dear. You really shouldn’t be here. After all, your father and I need some privacy. So, if you have anything to say to Charles, you can do so in the morning..."

"I have nothing to say to Charles. So, step out of my way."

"Well, Charles is busy right now..."

Out of patience, Aiden warned her for the last time," Step aside or I’ll make you."

Milli’s eyes glinted with something cold and dark, but she didn’t move. "You always were so headstrong. Fine, go ahead," she said, stepping back slightly but still lingering close. "But don’t say I didn’t warn you. My husband is having a private moment, and you might not like what you see."

Aiden’s jaw clenched as he pushed past Milli, his every instinct telling him that something was horribly wrong.

Without hesitation, he shoved the door open, his eyes scanning the room. The dim light from the bedside lamp revealed a scene that made his blood run cold, while giving him a feeling of deja vu.

There, in the massive bed, lay Serena—her form unmistakable beneath the sheets. But she wasn’t alone. Beside her, partially covered and facing the other way, was Charles, his father.

Aiden’s heart pounded in his chest, a wave of fury and disbelief crashing over him. For a moment, he was frozen, unable to reconcile what he was seeing and distinguishing the past and the present. Then the anger took over, burning hot and fierce.

With a snarl, Aiden stormed to the bed and grabbed his father by the collar, yanking him out from under the covers.

"What have you done?" Aiden demanded, his grip tightening on Charles as he shoved him against the wall.

"Me? I didn’t do anything! She was the one who walked in here and tried to throw herself at me. But..."

Before he could say anything more, Aiden grabbed the man and slammed him against the wall again, his eyes blazing with rage. "Do you really think I will believe you? That Serena would really throw herself at you. Do I look like a fool. I hope for your sake, you have not touched my wife. Because if you have, I will make sure that you bleed so slowly that you will beg for your death!"

"Aiden, I am your father..."

"You are not worthy of being called that! Get away from me!"

Without waiting for any explanation, Aiden scooped Serena into his arms and started to walk out of the room but not before warning," I’m taking her out of here." As he turned to leave, he shot a final, venomous glare at Charles and Milli. "You stay away from her. If you ever come near her again, you will regret it."
