Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 45: Questions
Chapter 45: Questions
"Aiden Hawk! How could you let this happen? You were supposed to take care of her, not stress her to the point of fainting! What have you been doing? Why did this happen? Did you not feed her well? How can she..."
Serena slowly regained consciousness, but even in the fog of unconsciousness, her mind had struggled to piece together fragments of memories. The sound of Grandma scolding Aiden was like music to her ears—not because it was directed at Aiden, but because it made her feel safe, almost warm. It was comforting to know that someone cared for her. If only she’d had someone like that when she first woke up in the hospital... It was a feeling she hadn’t experienced in a long time, not since she had woken up alone in that sterile hospital room, with someone plotting to kill her.
She looked around slowly and realized she was in her room. She opened her mouth to ask something, but before she could make a sound, Grandma seemed to notice that she had woken up.
Hurriedly, she came to Serena’s side and patted her hand. "Serena, child. You’ve woken up. Forgive Grandma! I failed to take into account that you are still weak... and pushed you..."
Serena smiled and tightly held the older woman’s hand, shaking her head. "Grandma, it’s not your or Aiden’s fault. I just... I was trying to think of something, and it happened. I’m okay now. I won’t be so foolish again."
Grandma patted Serena’s head and nodded. "Yes. Don’t think of the past. Were you trying to remember your time with Aiden?"
Serena smiled and avoided answering, not wanting to lie to the old woman, but Grandma continued, "Instead of thinking of the past, work on making new memories with your husband."
Serena smiled feebly, but inside, she was full of questions. Did she already have a husband? She remembered that man wanting to stand by her... what if she was married?
She looked at Aiden in confusion wondering what he would have to say about that, and he seemed to have caught onto her thoughts because he spoke up, "Grandma, you need to rest, and so does Serena. Why don’t I send you back so that she can..."
"Ha! Don’t think I’m going to let you off the hook, Aiden, just because she said it’s not your fault. I blame you for not taking better care of her. I’ll go to my room with Vera. But you! You will take good care of your wife! Am I clear?"
Aiden smiled at that. "Yes, ma’am!"
As Grandma walked out of the room, Aiden slowly closed the door behind her, locking it decisively. He’d seen the worry in Serena’s eyes the moment she’d woken up.
Casually, he leaned against the door and asked, "What made you faint?"
Serena gulped and looked away before answering, "I think... I think I might already be married."
She expected him to be shocked or worried, but he wasn’t even surprised as he questioned, "What makes you think that?"
"Aren’t you surprised?", Serena asked in confusion. If she was married then she would become a bigamist...
When he kept quiet, she felt her stomach sink. Could it be that she really was married and...he knew it?
But Aiden shook his head. "I know you were not married when I married you."
"How can you be so sure?"
Aiden grimaced. "Because you filled out the marriage registration form. And signed it. That is how it was even easier to marry you."
"What do you mean?" Serena eyed him with suspicion.
"According to the Thompsons, whom I believed to be your parents at the time, you’d been planning to elope with your lover. You’d filled out the form and everything but never eloped."
"I had a lover?" Serena asked in shock, though she couldn’t think why it would be so surprising. Isn’t that what she too had been thinking about? Husband or lover, it was the same thing.
"Why didn’t you tell me?" Serena asked in horror.
"I didn’t see the point. After all, you had failed to elope, and you were married to me..."
Serena narrowed her eyes thoughtfully as she looked at him. He made it sound so logical when it was anything but. . "Aiden Hawk! You are a very scary man. Why didn’t you..."
Aiden raised his arms in surrender before she could threaten him and said, "Before you begin to attack me, let me mention that I am already looking for your lover."
Serena blinked. "You are?"
"Yes. But let me remind you that you have signed a contract with me. And if you think that you will be able to return to him..." Aiden added coldly.
"Relax, relax. I don’t even remember him. Why would I want to go back to him?" Serena said, but refused to look at him. There was no need to fight battles for the future.
Aiden looked at her then. Would she really not go back to Sidney? But he was doubtful. However, that was something to worry about later.
"Why did you faint?"
"I had a feeling of déjà vu when I was talking to Grandma. I just remembered something, and then everything went blank."
Aiden nodded. "I’ll ask the doctors to conduct another test. That’s what I had guessed too."
"What did you see?"
"I... actually, I’ve only ever heard voices and never seen faces. And it’s usually an argument. The first time I had a flashback, it was an argument between me and some man. And then today, I was assuring a woman that I wanted a simple wedding, but the woman seemed angry. She said that he was her only son, and yet he wouldn’t be able to have a wedding because of me."
"I tried to close my eyes and concentrate to see the person’s face, but you know how that turned out."
Aiden grimaced. "Please don’t do that! The doctor has specifically warned that you should avoid pressuring your brain. I don’t need a repeat of today, alright?"
Serena nodded but then gave him a mischievous smile. "Aiden Hawk, you were worried for me?"
Aiden scoffed. "Of course not. It was Grandma..." but she could see from his expression that he had indeed been worried.
She laughed, leaned forward, and gently squished his cheeks. "Aiden, honey, you are such a green flag pretending to be a red flag... I never would have guessed..."
Aiden stood up, offended as he rubbed his cheeks. No one had ever dared to do something like that to him, even when he was a child.
