Chapter 42: Let Me Help
Chapter 42: Let Me Help
"What do you think you’re doing, Aiden Hawk?" Serena hissed, her voice low but sharp as she clutched the bodice of her gown with one hand. Her other hand was firmly planted on his chest, desperately trying to push him out of the small, enclosed trial room.
Aiden, who had the audacity to enter without an invite, only grinned, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "I’m helping you dress up, dear," he drawled, his tone dripping with a mixture of playfulness and arrogance.
Serena narrowed her eyes. "Get out of this room, Aiden, and fetch an assistant right away. Or I swear, I will scream," she warned. "I’m going to count to three."
When he simply shrugged and raised an eyebrow at her, "Three." Serena opened her mouth to let out a scream when he placed a hand over it, pulling her close," Who begins counting from three! You fool."
Unexpectedly, though he should have expected it, considering how violent she was, she bit his hand and he was the one who had to stifle his own scream.
Finally, when she let go, , he quickly withdrew his hand, rubbing the sore spot where her teeth had left a mark. But before she could make another move, he seized the moment, grabbing her by the waist and swiftly pressing her against the wall of the small, confining trial room and this time he was prepared, so that he wouldn’t end up with a kick in the nuts.
As he held her in place with his own body, he leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear, Aiden’s voice dropped to a low, urgent whisper. "What is wrong with you? This whole thing—everything—was arranged by Grandma. Can’t you figure that out by now? She set this up deliberately, orchestrating every little detail to get us exactly where she wants us. She wants us to be like this... in this situation, together. Don’t you see? So just stay quiet, just for a little while, and play along. We can walk out of here with you as the blushing bride, just like she planned."
Serena’s eyes widened in shock, the full weight of Aiden’s words sinking in. She had always known grandmother was a force to be reckoned with, but this... this was on another level. The realization that they were being manipulated into such a situation left her speechless. She didn’t know whether to admire the old fox or curse her.
Serena let out a long, slow breath, her chest rising and falling as she considered her options. Aiden was still holding her close, his body warm and solid against hers, and for once, she didn’t feel the immediate urge to push him away. In fact, she realized she was almost liking this position.
"Fine," she whispered, her voice barely audible as she looked down, not meeting his gaze. "But this doesn’t mean I’m okay with it. I’m just... going along with it for now. Don’t get any ideas."
"No ideas," he promised, though the glint in his eyes suggested he might have a few, regardless of his promise
Slowly, he released his hold on her waist, his hands sliding down her sides with a deliberate slowness that sent a shiver through her. He stepped back just enough to give her some space, but not so far that she couldn’t feel his presence, still hovering close.
"Raise your arm."
Serena hesitated, her breath catching in her throat as she processed his request. Aiden’s voice was soft, almost coaxing, and though every instinct in her told her to resist, something deeper, urged her to comply. She raised her arm slowly, telling herself that it was just practical to get dressed and see for herself how the dress looked.
Aiden’s fingers grazed her skin as he found the tab, and she had to suppress a shiver at the contact. His touch was surprisingly gentle, and she felt goosebumps rise on her skin, as he carefully tugged the zipper upward.
As the dress tightened to fit her perfectly, Aiden turned her around to look into the mirror. But her eyes remained fixed on his hands on her shoulders as her eyes met his in the mirror.
"You look beautiful in this dress, Serena." He whispered, carefully sliding his hands down her arms. His hand came around her waist, over her stomach as he pulled her backwards, closer into his body. " And look how good we look with each other."
Serena blinked. They did look good together. He was so handsome and standing like this, they even stood at a perfect height...
Serena’s breath caught as Aiden’s words sank in, the warmth of his body pressing against her back making it hard to focus. His hand on her stomach, the way he held her close, it all felt too intimate, too real. Thankfully, before she could forget herself, the assistant’s voice sounded from outside," Mrs Hawk. Do you need any assistance?"
Aiden rolled his eyes at the broken moment and stepped away with a murmur," Talk about bad timing."
As he opened the curtain and stepped out, he watched as the assistant’s eyes widened and she looked behind him, as if trying to peep inside to know what had happened inside. With a shake of his head, he answered the assistant," I’ve helped my wife. Just bring her to grandma now."
Serena stepped out of the room slowly and as she appeared in front of the grandma, shecarefully avoided the smug man’s gaze who was standing on the side. "You look absolutely perfect, my dear. This dress was made for you."
Aiden deliberately let his gaze rove over her before nodding," It does, Grandma. But there is something missing."
Both Grandma and Serena turned to him in confusion and Aiden smiled and walked over to Serena. Gently, he moved to stand beside her, and gathered her hair, placing them over her shoulder.
Aiden’s fingers lingered on the back of Serena’s neck for a moment, sending a shiver down her spine and her breath hitched as she felt the cool touch of metal against her skin. She tried to look up but he whispered a warning,"Hold still."
Within a moment, he then stepped back and looked at Grandmother who was nodding approvingly," This looks perfect, doesn’t it?"
Serena looked into the mirror and her breath caught as she looked at the pendant... It was two intertwined hearts with red rubies sparkling right in the middle.
