Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 182: Waking Up
Chapter 182: Waking Up
"Aiden."
The voice cut through the fog in his mind. Aiden opened his eyes slowly. His head felt heavy, but he forced himself to look around. His heart raced until he saw only his grandmother, sitting beside him staring at him. He let out a sigh of relief and closed his eyes again. At least they had been able to restrain her. It was something he’d been worried about from the moment he’d started this contingency plan.
Very good, boy. You make sure your wife isn’t here and ignore your grandmother who is," Mabel quipped, her voice a mix of dry humor and warmth. Her cane tapped lightly against the floor as if punctuating her rebuke.
Aiden’s lips twitched into a smile, but the effort of opening his mouth to respond was met with an unexpected barrier. Panic flickered across his features as he struggled to form words, only to find his voice absent. A subtle pain throbbed at his throat, sending a sharp reminder of the accident.
"Yes, yes. You’re going to have to wait to talk," Mabel said, waving a dismissive hand before leaning forward in her chair. Her eyes softened, but her tone remained matter-of-fact. "Now that you’ve woken up, the doctors will want to check for any residual swelling in your throat and airways. It seems that when the airbag deployed, it struck your throat harder than anyone realized. Best not to strain yourself until they’ve given the all-clear."
Aiden’s fingers found her hand, squeezing it in silent acknowledgment and reassuring her that he was okay. His expression shifted to that mischievous look she recognized all too well—a look that once charmed her and more often than not landed him in trouble as a boy. She narrowed her eyes, a rare smile tugging at her lips. Even now, with his voice lost, he had no trouble coaxing this old woman.
"She wants to kick you, you know," she said with a pointed look, watching as amusement flickered in his eyes. His smile widened, the faintest sound of a hoarse chuckle caught in his chest. Mabel sighed, the creases around her mouth deepening as she shook her head. It was good to see love blossoming in her family. So what if she and her children had not been much blessed with love... her grandson would change that and probably lift the Hawk curse of never being able to have and hold their love.
Before she could ponder this for long, the doctors raced in, having been alerted by the nurse that he was awake. And as expected after a lot of probing the doctor spoke up,"You sustained a few rib fractures, which we’ve managed to reset. It’s going to take a few weeks for them to heal, so you’ll need plenty of rest and minimal exertion. Your head injury was thankfully minor, but it’s crucial that you avoid any sudden movements or strain. And as for your throat the airbag impact caused significant swelling. It will take a few days for your voice to recover fully, so it’s important not to push yourself."
Aiden’s eyes narrowed with frustration as he processed the news, nodding reluctantly. Mabel stood at his bedside, her lips pressed tightly together, her expression a complex mix of relief, fear, and maternal irritation. She could already see in the boy’s expression that he had no intention of following the doctor’s orders.
When the doctor stepped outside, leaving them alone finally, Aiden gestured toward the notepad on the side table. Mabel Hawk handed him the notepad and watched in silence as he jotted down a few words, before raising them up for her to see.
Mabel leaned over, adjusting her spectacles to read the hurried scrawl. Her eyes softened as she took in the words: GO home and rest.
A deep breath shuddered through her, and her expression shifted into one of half-exasperated affection. "And leave you here to escape? Don’t be foolish, boy, you may think you’re a grown man now, tossing orders around like confetti, but let me remind you that I—"
Aiden’s raised brow and the playful glimmer in his eyes cut her off, though he squeezed her hand once more for emphasis that he was okay and he would not try to escape the hospital.
"Don’t you dare think for a second that I’ll just trot off and nap while you lie here looking like death warmed over," she continued, softening her voice as she fought back the tears that threatened to betray her. "Bossy children who think they can order their elders around," she muttered, more to herself than to him, "next thing, you’ll be telling me to mind my blood pressure and drink my tea."
Aiden’s lips curved into a small, strained smile. He held up the notepad once more and scribbled an additional line: "Go drink your tea."
Mabel chuckled and pointed at him but before she could say more, he scribbled agaian, "Please. I need you to rest. For me?"
The sincerity in the words made Mabel’s stern facade crack. She sighed deeply, the weight of worry momentarily lifting. "You’re impossible, you know that?" she said, her voice catching slightly. With one last, lingering look, she added, "You rest too, Aiden. No more stunts, you hear?"
She shuffled out with her cane tapping the floor in a familiar rhythm, muttering under her breath about the audacity of youth. Aiden watched her go, the room suddenly quieter.
It was only after making sure that she had left did the person waiting outside enter the room and give his report," None of the Dawn’s seem to be involved in this nor Corrick. Though the person following you was indeed one of his men, he does not seem involed in the accident. The driver of the truck is missing, the company claims that their truck was stolen and the police are leaning towards it being an accident... You were seemingly caught in the middle of the carjacking."
Aiden shook his head and taking out a fresh page, started to draw scribble something. Soon, he raised a small protrait of a man and scrawled under it," This is the man who was driving. He was supposed to kill. But I pushed him away. My airbag never deployed. He hit my throat before trying to kill me and had to escape because the security arrived."
