Chapter 166: The News
"This is the information you requested."
Serena looked up from her papers, handing the file to her assistant with a sigh. "Mahi, prepare this gift for Ava. Her engagement is tomorrow, is it not?"
Mahi glanced down at the file she’d just been given, her eyes widening as she absorbed its contents. "Are you certain you want to go through with this? This might stir up some new rumors, especially with those who already believe you’re still coveting Sidney. If you make this move, you’ll only give them more to talk about."
Serena’s expression was cool and indifferent as she shrugged. "Let them talk. Sidney thinks he can keep one foot in each of two boats, does he? Well, let’s see what happens when one of them starts to sink."
Mahi pressed her lips together in a tight line, nodding at Serena’s decision without pressing her further on it. She could guess the unasked question—was Serena forcing Sidney’s hand, hoping he’d pick her boat to stand on once it was all over? But she knew better than to ask, choosing instead to quietly leave the room and continue her preparations.
Left alone, Serena allowed herself a moment to review a summary of Aiden’s recent conversations with her uncle and Governor Corrick. She exhaled, realizing just how much she’d miscalculated the man. No wonder Aiden had so much free time to dedicate to her affairs—he seemed to work at a speed bordering on inhuman. It had only been a few days, and already he’d maneuvered himself into a position from which he could strike at her from every direction.
It seemed Aiden was more formidable than she’d originally estimated. Sigh! She would have to get him to back off next... It was then when another thought struck her. So what if he bought her company and even bought shares in this. At least that way, he wouldn’t cut off contact with her and she would still have a chance to look at him...
Then Serena frowned, catching herself mid-thought. What kind of masochistic spiral was she falling into? She didn’t need to analyze Aiden’s tactics like some game she had to lose. To eliminate his influence, all she had to do was deal with those who wanted to harm her—and finally put an end to Sidney’s interference in her life. With him gone, she would pursue that Ice Man and teach him what it means to attack her!
For now, however, she had other priorities. She should focus on arranging a meeting with Mr. Corrick. He held more cards in his hand than she had originally thought, and a personal discussion might reveal his intentions more clearly. Of course, it would also mean that
As if summoned by her very thoughts, a soft knock came at her door. Mahi opened it just wide enough to step inside, as she announced, "Governor Corrick is here."
Serena straightened, briefly collecting herself before nodding her permission. When Governor Corrick entered, she greeted him politely, gesturing to a chair before leaning back, studying him carefully. As she watched him take his seat, she found herself struck by how much he resembled her Uncle Matthew—not at first glance, perhaps, but in subtle ways. The way he held his posture, a certain set to his jawline... yes, the resemblance was there, if one looked close enough, just like Sidney had claimed. Hmm.
For a moment, she was distracted by the thought that her uncle was probably this man’s son. Could her grandmother have cheated on her husband? She shrugged internally, the older woman did have a different set of morals from what she rememberd so anything was possible.
And yet, if her grandmother had indeed cheated, why had she then named Corrick as Matthew’s godfather? That seemed a strange and ironic choice, as if she were taunting fate—or perhaps satisfying some twisted sense of duty.
And so, before the man could ask anything, she asked bluntly," Are you my uncle’s biological father?"
To say the old man was shocked would be putting it mildly, Serena mused as she observed his expression. He looked as though she’d struck him with a bolt of lightning—his shock so profound that he might not have been more astonished if she’d pulled a gun on him right then and there abd shot him. Or claimed that she was Thor.
After a moment of stunned silence, he burst out, "Sleep with that woman? Disgusting! I wouldn’t have gone near her with a ten-foot pole—even if she’d been the last woman on Earth!"
Serena raised an eyebrow, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Alright, alright. No need to get so worked up. She did name you as her children’s godfather, after all... I didn’t expect such vehement disdain."
Corrick snorted, his expression caught somewhere between frustration and exasperation. "And that, Serena Dawn, is precisely why I came here to speak with you myself! While Matthew keeps insisting there’s no point to it, I thought you ought to know the whole truth of it. And by your words just now, you already know that Edwina Dawn was not someone who held morals in high regards!"
He leaned forward, crossing his arms in a way that told her he was done beating around the bush. Clearly, whatever he had come to say, he was ready to lay it all on the table. And so, she raised her hand and gestured," Go ahead."
"Matthew and Daniel aren’t Edwina’s children," he began, his voice thick with restrained anger. "They’re my sister’s children. Edwina slithered her way into that marriage just to get her hands on the Nvidia business! Do you even know where the name comes from? It’s from my sister’s name—Nvida! But Edwina Dawn? She wormed her way into my sister’s life, gained her trust, and then slipped into her marriage bed, eventually casting her out entirely."
He paused, his jaw tightening, before continuing. "So if we’re talking about rights, the rightful owners of Nvidia are my nephews, Matthew and Daniel. Neither you nor that woman had any legitimate claim to it!"
