Chapter 144: A Gift

"I have a gift for you."

Serena looked up tiredly from where she sat in front of the mirror, her fingers loosely gripping the hairbrush she had been absently running through her hair. She raised an eyebrow, her voice filled with exhaustion, "A gift? Why? What’s the special occasion?"

Aiden grinned, leaning casually against the doorframe. "Nah, no occasion. Just a gift, you know, for no reason."

Serena sighed softly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Alright then," she nodded, though her tone remained unenthusiastic, "Just give it to me and let me get some sleep."

Aiden’s grin widened as he shook his head, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Uh-uh. Can’t bring it here. You have to come outside."

Serena stared at him, her weariness almost palpable as she slumped a little in her chair. "Aiden," she groaned, "Can’t it wait until tomorrow? I’m seriously too tired to deal with whatever this is."

"Nah," he said again, his excitement barely contained. "I’m sure you’ll appreciate it tonight."

She blinked, her eyes widening in mild alarm. Something she would appreciate tonight? What in the world was he thinking? She was already bone-tired, her muscles aching from the long day and an even longer night of waiting by her bedside. She was sure she couldn’t appreciate anything at the moment—except maybe a solid eight hours of sleep. But seeing the excitement bubbling over in his expression, she mustered up some strength and sighed, pushing herself up from the chair.

"Fine," she muttered, rubbing her temples before standing. "Alright, alright. I’m coming."

Aiden’s grin grew even wider as he held out his hand to her. As she stepped toward him, he suddenly produced a blindfold.

Serena raised her eyebrows in disbelief. "You’re seriously going to cover my eyes? Aiden, if I end up with a stubbed toe or worse..." she trailed off, exasperation lacing her voice as he tied the blindfold around her head.

"You won’t. Trust me," he promised, steering her out of the room, with his hand on her waist. After a short walk, they stopped and despite her initial resistance, a part of her was curious about whatever Aiden had planned.

"Ta-da!" he announced with a flourish, pulling the blindfold away from her eyes.

Serena blinked rapidly, adjusting to the sudden brightness. For a few moments, she stared in silence, her brow furrowing in confusion as she processed what was in front of her. There was a woman—a stranger, dressed in a sleek, professional-looking outfit. She was smiling politely at her.

Without saying a word, Serena grabbed Aiden’s hand and swiftly dragged him back inside, her voice a harsh whisper as she spoke, "There is a lady standing there. Inside my living room."

Aiden chuckled. "Yeah, I know."

Serena narrowed her eyes at him. "Is she a model or something? Are you gifting me the clothes she’s wearing?"

Aiden’s smile faltered, "Uh, no. Do you... do you like her clothes?"

"No," Serena answered flatly, crossing her arms over her chest. "Then is she modeling something else? Jewelry maybe? Is that the gift?"

"What? Of course not. You don’t even like wearing all that stuff."

"Then what on earth—"

"The lady outside is your gift," Aiden interrupted, his face lighting up with excitement again as though this would make everything perfectly clear.

Serena blinked at him, completely taken aback. Her eyes darted from his face to the door and back again. "What is wrong with you? You cannot give people as gifts, Aiden!"

"No, no, I don’t mean precisely her. I mean, her services."

For a moment, there was complete, stunned silence. Serena stared at him wide-eyed, her mouth slightly open as if trying to form words, while Aiden continued to look at her like he’d just offered the greatest gift in the world. Then, slowly, Serena’s expression morphed from shock to sheer disbelief.

"Her services?" she repeated, her voice low and dangerous.

Aiden nodded eagerly, apparently missing the growing tension in the air.

Serena’s jaw dropped as her face flushed. She took a step back, crossing her arms protectively over her chest. "You perv!" she snapped, glaring at him. "How can you..."

It took a moment for Aiden to catch on and then he was the one who was flushed and laughing," Hey! You are the perv! For those kinds of thoughts okay! I had something absolutelt innocent in mind."

Serena glared at him, not believing him while Aiden explained," She is a security agent cum assistant! I’ve hired her for you, but she won’t be reporting to me! She will only report to you so you don’t have to be worried about me spying on you. And she is a business major, trained in office work, so she could be perfect for handling your transition to Nvidia Industries..."

He moved behind her then, taking her shoulders and massaging them as he leaned in close," But, if you are looking for those kind of services, I can offer myself..."

Serena shivered as his breath blew over her ear and he kissed her nape, her eyes closing off their own accord. Gosh! This man was a good massuese...But then she shook herself," An assistant?"

"While I appreciate the ’gift’, I don’t think I can accept her without an interview at the very least."

"Of course. You can go ahead and do that. I just brought her to you because at the moment you really do need her. So, you can even use her temporarily and then when you find someone, you can let go of her. Either way, the employment contract is going to be between you and her, so you don’t have to worry about anything. Go ahead and meet her and discuss a time suitable for tomorrow to interview her."

Composing her face, Serena walked outside and smiled at the woman," Hi. I am sorry to keep you waiting..."

The woman smiled back," It’s alright ma’am. I am pretty sure I would be shocked too if I saw someone had gifted me a ’human.’ "

Serena laughed at that and quickly carried on the conversation.
