Chapter 142: Okay

"Are you alright?" Serena looked up to see Sidney striding towards her, concern etched on his face. Immediately, she stood up, suspicions rising. How did he know that she was here? She had not informed anyone as yet. Not even Aiden. Before she could ask, Sidney grabbed her shoulders, giving her a quick once-over, eyes scanning her for any harm.

"The blood?" he asked, his voice tight, betraying his fear.

"It’s not mine," Serena answered coldly, her tone clipped. She shifted slightly in his grasp. "Let go of me."

Sidney didn’t seem to register her words. Instead, his arms wrapped around her suddenly, pulling her into a tight embrace. "You have no idea how scared I was when I heard you’d been under attack," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "You’ve only just returned, and the thought of something happening to you again..."

Serena stiffened in his arms, her body rigid against him, her mind racing. Even though her instincts screamed at her to push him away, the way he almost trembled against her as he hugged her made her realize that he really was as affected as he said. The action more than his words, gave her pause, stopping her from pushing him away.

Her momentart hesitation, however, was noticed by the person standing just behind him. Over Sidney’s shoulder, her eyes found Aiden’s, standing just beyond, his expression unreadable.

Realizing how this must look, she pushed at his shoulder and stepped away from him. Sidney frowned and tried to hold her back but as she pushed away at his arms and walked away.

As she walked away, Sidney turned on his heels, watching her retreat toward Aiden with a dark frown. His gaze flickered to Aiden, his eyes narrowing in quiet fury, fists clenched at his sides. He hated the way Serena walked toward Aiden without looking back, leaving him standing alone. And he couldn’t help but wonder: what would it take to get Aiden out of her life once and for all?

Meanwhile, Serena wondered if she should explain what just happened, but the unreadable expression on Aiden’s face made her hesitate. Would he even care for an explanation? But in the moment, she could not help but frown. It wasn’t as if they were real lovers or anything. And this was a hospital! A public place. There was no need for explanations.

However, while she was thinking of all this, an before she could speak, Aiden broke the silence in a low voice, "You’re hurt."

Serena blinked, confused for a moment, before glancing down at herself. Serena blinked, momentarily confused. "No," she said, shaking her head, her voice softer now. "It’s not my blood." The words felt heavier in her throat than before. Her voice wavered slightly, and she had to swallow hard to keep her emotions in check. It wasn’t her blood, but Jane’s—the girl who had been like a sister to her. Her mind flashed to Jane, lying in the operating room because of a warning meant for Serena. The thought made her heart clench painfully.

Aiden reached out and gently caught her hand, turning it over to reveal the faint scratches marring her skin. Serena frowned, not even realizing when or how she’d gotten them. But the sight of him holding her hand as he showed her the scratches made her feel even worst. She’d only received a few scratches...

"These happened at some point," he said, his eyes flickering with a restrained concern as his fingers lightly grazed the marks. "You need to clean up, get something on these. And you can’t stay in these clothes."

She opened her mouth to object. She had no intention of going anywhere until Jane she knew how Jane was doing. Once Jane was out of surgery and out of danger, she would freshen up and all that. But until then, she was not leavng the hospital.

"I’ve already arranged a room for your friend," Aiden said, his tone leaving little room for argument. "You can change there and clean up. You don’t have to leave the hospital. It’ll be quick, I promise. I’ll wait here for news about your friend. But standing around like this... you’ll only scare her when she wakes up."

His words hit her harder than she expected. Serena hesitated, her resolve wavering as she looked down at her bloodstained clothes and scratched hands. Aiden’s thoughtful approach left her feeling dazed, as if he understood her without needing any explanation. He was right—she couldn’t let Jane see her like this, not after everything that had happened.

She nodded slowly, feeling her exhaustion catch up with her. As she turned to follow Aiden’s suggestion, a thought flashed through her mind: how did he even know she was here? She shook her head, deciding not to question him, at least not in front of Sidney.

In fact, the person she needed to confront was Sidney.

As Serena walked away quietly, Sidney’s glare remained fixed on Aiden, his anger bubbling just beneath the surface. "How did you know Serena was here?" he demanded, his voice laced with accusation.

Aiden’s gaze never wavered, calm but resolute. "The same way you have your ways and I have mine," he replied evenly. "But I think the more important question is, who does Serena want here with her right now?" His tone sharpened as he took a step closer to Sidney. "And we already have the answer to that. So, leave."

Sidney’s face twisted in fury. "I’m not leaving! Especially now that you’ve proven you can’t protect her. You’re her husband, aren’t you? How could you let her wander around alone at night? How could you let this happen—"

Aiden scoffed,"Let her? See that is the difference between you and me, Sidney. I am her husband, not her prison warden to ’let’ her do anything. As for her protection, I will definitely find out about this. And when I do... that person is going to regret even looking in Serena’s direction.
