Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 141: Danger
Chapter 141: Danger
As they walked down the quiet street, the only sounds were the faint hum of distant traffic and their laughter. Serena licked her ice cream cone, smiling as Jane talked animatedly, waving her hands in the air. She’d known that Jane would come see her the moment she realized her apartment had been well maintained. And walking like this, with her old friend, it was a relief she had not expected.
Out of nowhere, a loud crack split the air—sharp, like a gunshot. Both women jumped in shock, while Jane quickly clutched Serena’s arm, "Did you hear that?" she asked, her voice unsteady.
Before Serena could respond, another crack echoed, louder this time. The unmistakable sound of something metal hitting the pavement sent a chill down Serena’s spine. She looked down, spotting a bullet casing skidding across the street. It was the first time she had seen something like this, but she just knew what this meant.
"Run!" Serena screamed, grabbing Jane’s arm. They bolted down the street, ice cream cones falling forgotten to the ground. Her lungs burned as they sprinted, but fear pushed her forward.
Another shot rang out, closer this time, and Jane screamed. She stumbled, her body pitching forward as her hand flew to her side. "Serena!" she cried out, her voice filled with panic.
Serena skidded to a halt, turning just in time to see Jane collapse onto the pavement, clutching her side. Her fingers were stained red with blood.
"Jane!" Serena rushed to her, dropping to her knees. She pressed her hands over Jane’s wound, trying to stop the bleeding. "Stay with me! You’re going to be okay!" she urged.
Jane’s face twisted in pain, her breath coming in shallow gasps. "I can’t... It hurts," she whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks.
Serena didn’t answer. Her mind raced, searching for a way out, but the footsteps behind them grew louder. Whoever was after them was getting closer. They didn’t have much time.
"We have to move. Come on, Jane. Let’s go."
Jane groaned, struggling to stand, but her legs buckled beneath her. "Serena, I can’t... I’m too weak."
"You don’t have a choice!" Serena hissed, her voice laced with fear. She looped Jane’s arm over her shoulder and half-carried, half-dragged her down the street. Her heart pounded in her ears, her breath coming in ragged gasps as they stumbled forward.
Another shot whizzed past them, shattering a nearby streetlamp. Glass rained down, and Serena flinched, nearly losing her grip on Jane.
She gritted her teeth and forced herself to keep moving. Every step felt heavier than the last, her muscles screaming in protest, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t stop.
"Serena... I don’t think... I’m not going to make it," Jane whimpered, her face ashen.
"Don’t you dare say that!" Serena snapped, her voice thick with emotion. "You’re going to make it, Jane. I won’t let them take you. We just need to keep going. Once we find a relatively safe space, I’ll call the police. I still have my phone."
With one final surge of adrenaline, Serena dragged Jane into a dark alley, pressing themselves against the cold, damp wall. They crouched down, their bodies trembling. Silence wrapped around them, except for Jane’s labored breathing and the distant hum of the city.
For a moment, Serena didn’t dare move. Her eyes scanned the narrow street they had come from, waiting, expecting more gunfire, more footsteps, something. But there was nothing. Just the eerie calm that followed the chaos.
"They’re gone..." Serena whispered, though she hardly believed it. Her hands shook, blood smearing her fingers as she pressed them harder against Jane’s wound. "They have to be."
Jane whimpered, her face pale, her eyes barely open. "Serena... I feel so cold," she mumbled, her voice weak and fading.
Serena’s heart lurched in her chest. "No, no, no," she muttered, shaking Jane lightly. "Stay with me. Just stay with me a little longer. I’ll get you help."
With one last glance over her shoulder, Serena grabbed her phone and dialed for an ambulance. Her fingers were slick with blood, making it hard to keep hold of the device, but she managed to give their location in a frantic whisper, even as she continued to make sure that the attackers had indeed left.
Finally, the wail of sirens broke the silence, and moments later, paramedics rushed to their side. Serena stepped back, her legs wobbling in relief. They were finally safe. As she watched them lift Jane onto a stretcher, she felt her own strength gave way, almost feeling her knees buckle.
***
At the hospital, Jane was taken into surgery while the paramedics advised her to get herself checked as she seemed to be in shock. She nodded numbly but even then continues to stay there, still trying to process what had happened. Had they really just been attacked?
Or had they just been in the wrong place at the wrong time? But somehow, her instinct told her that this was not the case. Even though they had not been chased, those few bullets had been meant for her. Just then, her phone vibrated, and the message there sent a chill through her, "How’s your friend doing? You were lucky this time and so was she. But next time, you won’t be so lucky. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll back off. Stay away from the Dawns. Appreciate this little welcome back gift and prepare for more, or simply return to wherever you crawled out of, if you want to live."
The words blurred in front of her eyes as she read the message again and again. She felt her stomach drop as the reality of it hit her, confirming her suspicion—this wasn’t random. This was a warning. Whoever it was that had been doing things under the cover of darkness until now had somehow decided to come forward. They’d upgraded from causing accidents to outright staging at attack on her and warning her. She needed to handle this...
