Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband
Chapter 139: Hold Off

Chapter 139: Hold Off

It was obvious Serena was dragging this out just to toy with them, and every word she spoke felt like another slap to Ava’s face.

And yet, Ava felt a bit pacified when Sidney took her side for a change and spoke up, "It’s not just about pressure or troubling the rest of your family, Rena! This is about the future of everything that your grandmother worked for. The longer you drag this out, the more risk you’re putting the entire company in. And whether or not you care, that affects you too. If this company sinks, you’ll be sinking right alongside."

"Then I guess we’ll all have to wait and see if I let us sink, won’t we?" she replied lazily.

Ava, unable to stand Serena’s smugness any longer, stepped around Sidney and answered, "This isn’t a game, Serena. People’s lives, livelihoods are at stake. You might enjoy sitting back and watching everyone squirm, but don’t forget—you’re tied to this too. Whatever happens affects you just as much as it affects us."

Serena’s smile didn’t falter, but her eyes turned cold. "I haven’t forgotten a thing, Ava. I know exactly what’s at stake. But, I’m not about to be bullied into making a decision just because someone’s uncomfortable. As for the losses, I would say the only ones who might truly suffer is me, for losing my hard work, if I do decide delay the execution. Whether today or three years from now, you will still be getting a sizable sum, whereas I would not be getting much. Anyway, I am not here to discuss my losses.Organise a meeting of the board of directors.I would like to discuss a few things first."

With that, Serena stood up, ready to leave. "What do you need to see the board of directors for?"

"I am a shareholder, Ava. Of course I need to see the directors. What sort of a silly question..."

Just then, there was a knock on the door and as the three people turned to watch, a young woman entered the conference room," The chairman would like to see Miss Serena."

Serena raised an eyebrow and nodded, ’Of course, I’ll be there in a moment." She then turned to the Sidney and Ava," There we go. Now, I have to go with and deal with another attempt of someone trying to force me into doing their bidding. Toodles.."

Serena stepped out of the conference room with a dismissive wave toward Sidney and Ava, not bothering to hide her amusement at their frustrations. The young woman who had delivered the message led her to a large office at the far end of the floor, knocking politely before opening the door for Serena to enter.

Unexpectedly, Michael Dawn stood up as she entered and invited her to even sit, being the epitome of politeness. She raised an eyebrow. How interesting... Had he already accepted defeat? She was almost certain Sidney or Ava would come storming in any second, ready to gang up on her and this would turn out to be a scene of good cop bad cop. But to her surprise, Michael spoke softly to his secretary, instructing her to close the door and not let anyone in.

Serena’s eyebrows lifted, but she said nothing. This was certainly unexpected.

"I’ve arranged a private office for you here, Serena" he began, his voice measured. "You’re a significant shareholder, and I believe it’s only right that you have a space of your own while you consider your next steps."

Serena blinked, genuinely surprised. An office of her own? This wasn’t at all what she had expected. Narrowing her eyes slightly, she tilted her head, trying to read the man across from her. "An office? Why?"

"I’m well aware of the tension that has always existed between you and my wife and daughter. I also know their faults and the injustice you have suffered at times at their hands. And that there might be a chance that you would use this chance for revenge. But, I respect my mother’s last wishes. Her decision to entrust you with these assets, to give you the final say—it was not an easy choice for her, but it was her wish. And I intend to honor that."

Serena stared at him, momentarily taken aback. This was something else entirely. Something was up... definitely.

You’re saying you’re willing to wait?" she asked slowly, her tone skeptical. "Even if it means the company’s expansion is delayed? Even if it frustrates your son?"

Michael gave a small nod. "Yes, Serena. I’m willing to wait. You’re not going to be bullied or rushed into making a decision before you’re ready. Not by Sidney. Not by Ava. Not by anyone."

She hadn’t expected this kind of sincerity. "And what’s your angle, Mr. Dawn?" she asked, still wary. "You must want something out of this too."

"I want what my mother wanted," he said simply. "For the company to thrive, yes, but more importantly, for her legacy to be protected. She believed in you, Serena, and I believe in that judgment. That’s all there is to it."

Serena fell silent for a moment. Grandmother had assured her that her uncles were not involved in the plot to murder her father. Could it be true. Even though over the years, this man had not done anything to actively harm her, he had turned a blind eye to all the ways his wife and daughter had made her life a living hell. And his attitude had been clear. So, why this three hundred sixty degree turn about?

For a few moments, she said nothing, letting the silence stretch between them, weighing her options. Then, slowly, she stood up, smoothing the front of her dress.

"I appreciate the offer, but you’ll have to excuse me if I remain a little... cautious. I’ll see you again, soon. Good day, Mr Dawn."

As Serena walked out of the office, the man’s calm expression, however, changed.

He reached for his phone and dialed a number, "I’ve done as you asked. She’s suspicious, but I think it worked."

There was a pause on the other end of the line before the voice responded. "Good. Keep playing the part. We’ll need her to trust you before the next phase."
