Chapter 136: Don’t Want To Go
Serena smiled to herself as she brushed her hair, sitting in front of the mirror. Who said girls were always drawn to bad boys? Aiden Hawk was the perfect example of a walking green flag—thoughtful, charming, and just the right amount of adorable. Too adorable, actually. She couldn’t help but grin at the memory of his antics. When he failed to convince her to go back with him earlier, his next move had been just as transparent: try to spend the night. From hinting at having a drink together to pretending to be too sleepy to drive—his attempts were, admittedly, cute. And clever.
She shook her head, still smiling. Cute and cunning, she corrected herself mentally. After all, he had somehow succeeded in getting a ’goodnight’ kiss from her, hadn’t he?
Her fingers paused in their rhythm as she recalled the entire scene from an hour ago, unable to stop the smile on her face.
"Aren’t you going to leave? We’ve already had dinner."
"I was thinking of having a night cap... Do you have any drinks in this house? Should I ask me assistant to get some wine or..."
"No. I have to have an early start tomorrow so no drinks. And you need to go back too. So, goodbye Aiden Hawk."
Finally—after what felt like a battle of wills—he’d stood up. But of course, he didn’t leave right away. Instead, he paused at the door, resting his hand on the frame like he had all the time in the world. "I’m feeling too sleepy to drive. How about I stay here tonight? I can sleep on the couch, I swear." He’d even gone as far as rubbing his eyes for her benefit. As if she had not seen this man work sixteen hours straight with no breaks.
Serena rolled her eyes. "Uh-huh. Nice try. You’re going home, Aiden." She’d practically had to push him out the door. And even then—even then—he’d paused at the threshold, looking back at her with a puppy-dog expression she never would have believed possible on someone like him. It had almost worked too!
"Aren’t you forgetting something?" he had asked, his voice all innocent, but with that underlying mischief that should have warned her that he was upto no good.
She had blinked, caught off guard. "What?"
"A goodnight kiss?" He’d tilted his head slightly, as if that sealed the deal. "Come on, it’s the least you could do after kicking me out. It’s only fair."
And somehow—how, she didn’t know—she had fallen for it. She had leaned in, intending to kiss his cheek and send him on his way. But at the last second, he had turned his head, stealing a kiss that left her stunned. A mind-numbing, breath-stealing kiss that was still making her lips tingle.
Shaking her head to snap herself out of the memory, Serena looked at herself in the mirror again, her cheeks still a little flushed. She sighed, laughing softly at her own weakness. "Don’t ever think of getting a pet dog," she muttered to herself, half-joking, half-serious. "You’re clearly too susceptible to puppy eyes."
Finally, after giving herself one last glance in the mirror, Serena stood up, stretching her arms over her head. It was definitely time for bed. But just as she reached for the light switch, her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She glanced at the screen, already knowing who it was before even picking it up. Of course. Who else could it be? Shaking her head with a small smile, she answered the call.
"I thought you were too sleepy to even drive home and now you are calling me instead of..." she teased, but her voice trailed off as the video feed flickered to life. Her eyes widened slightly as she took in the sight of Aiden’s face on the screen—his lip was slightly swollen, and a faint bruise was forming under one eye.
"Did you... really fall asleep on the way?" she asked, a mix of concern and disbelief creeping into her voice. Her heart gave a small pang of guilt as she wondered for a split second if maybe, just maybe, he had been telling the truth earlier about being too tired to drive. Had she pushed him away only for him to end up in some sort of accident?
But then, he gave her that same pitiful, exaggerated look—the one that was just a little too over the top to be sincere. And that’s when she knew. No accident. No real danger.
Aiden sighed, pointing at his bruised face. "I just knew there was danger in leaving tonight. See? I got punched in the face!"
Serena blinked, caught between sympathy and amusement. "Aww... poor you," she said, her voice laced with mock pity as she leaned closer to the screen. "What happened? Are you icing it, at least?"
Aiden made a face, his expression somewhere between irritation and smug triumph, before holding up an ice pack and shaking it in front of the camera. "Yeah, yeah, I’m icing it," he muttered, clearly fishing for more sympathy. "But this wouldn’t have happened if you’d just let me stay. See? This is all your fault."
"Oh, is it now?" Serena raised an eyebrow.
"Absolutely. If I had stayed, I wouldn’t have gotten into any trouble." He gave her that playful, wounded look again. "Or if you’d been with me, getting a kiss from you would’ve made everything better a lot sooner."
"You’re telling me... that the Aiden Hawk, got a little bruise and now you’re calling me for sympathy? How weak."
Aiden’s brow furrowed, his expression indignant. "Weak? I wouldn’t say weak. I was just calling to inform you so that when you see the other person tomorrow, you won’t be too shocked and blame me. He started it."
Serena paused as she guessed his meaning," You’re telling me you got into a fight with Sidney?"
"I didn’t get into a fight, okay. I was just going home, he decided that he could attack me so of course, I had to hit back."
Serena shook her head," Of course of course."
