Chapter 131: Clear

"It seems," she said, her voice steady but with an edge of resignation, "that my choice is quite obvious."

Her gaze swept over the room, lingering for a moment on each face before settling on the two main figures. Ava’s expression gleamed with quiet triumph, her eyes filled with satisfaction. In contrast, Sidney appeared unsure, his hesitation palpable as though he wasn’t certain whether to celebrate or remain wary. Good. Let him hesitate. It was better that way.

She cocked her head as she looked at the documents in her hands, "While her intentions seem clear on the surface," she continued, her tone taking on a more thoughtful edge, "what I don’t fully understand is this—why the unnecessary complication? If her goal was truly to give them what she laid out and leave me what she intended, why not make it final? Why place this power in my hands? Why give me a choice at all? And then ask you esteemed gentlemen to mediate? Hmm? You said so yourself that she wanted you to mediate."

The lawyer hesitated and exhanged a glance with Sidney. In fact, he had asked Mrs Dawn the same question and been warned that so will her granddaughter. But Mr Price had mentioned that they should not bring it up unless she did. And now that she had, he could not keep it from her.

"Mrs Dawn did not want you to feel cornered into making a decision. According to her, you would take the path that is right."

"I see..Not corner me into making a decision? But isn’t that what all of you are doing? Trying to make me accept the ’right’ way. The thing is, whatever choice I make, I do it on my terms, and no one else’s."

The room fell silent, her words cutting through the matter with precision. Sidney’s brow furrowed, realizing that their attempt to nudge Serena in a certain direction could backfire.

Unable to stop himself, he questioned her, "Are you really willing to give everything up? The business, the shares? All of it? For something that might not even be true? For some imagined slight?"

Serena smiled, a small, almost cryptic smile that gave nothing away. "I haven’t decided yet," she said, stepping back from the table. "But I will. And when I do, it won’t be because I was pushed into it."

She glanced one last time at the legal document, then stood up and turned towards the door. "Now if you’ll excuse me, I need time to think."

With that, she was about to leave the office when the lawyers stopped her," Miss Serena, we need you to wait for a few more moments."

As the others shuffled out of the room, Serena took back her seat wondering what was left. Were they going to try and persuade her in private now as well?

"There’s more, Miss Serena. Miss Edwina... she asked us to tell you something privately."

"Miss Edwina never believed your father’s death was an accident. She had her doubts from the beginning, but before she could dig deeper, well, her own health began to fail. You see, she had been considering bringing your father back into the business, because neither of his brothers—Matthew nor Daniel—were very capable. Not when it came to running things. But just before she could act, the accident happened. And she... she was suspicious. She believed foul play might have been involved. We were instructed to investigate your father’s death, and now, in light of Miss Edwina’s passing, we’re extending that investigation to her death as well."

Miss Edwina anticipated you would have your own doubts... and she wanted you to know that she had taken certain precautions. Specifically, she made sure to investigate whether your uncles, Matthew and Daniel, had anything to do with your father’s death. According to her findings, they are not involved. She hoped that would offer some clarity when you make your decision regarding the inheritance."

Serena’s throat felt tight, but she managed to speak. "So what’s the point of all this? If they weren’t involved, why is this coming up now?"

The lawyer hesitated for a moment, his gaze dropping to the documents before him. "Because she believed someone else was. Someone connected to the family, perhaps, but not directly. Her concern was that whoever it was might come after you, should you decide to hold onto the business and the shares."

Serena’s eyes narrowed. "And if I give everything up, then what? I’d be safe? But I would still be the lasgest shareholder, right?"

"It’s possible," the lawyer said carefully. "Miss Edwina believed that by handing over control to Matthew and Daniel, it would satisfy those behind the scenes. They might not come after you, as you would no longer pose a threat to their interests. But... if you choose to hold onto the business, if you decide to fight for what’s yours... then you must be prepared. She warned that your life might be in danger."

"Miss Edwina said that if it came to that, she expected Mr. Price to protect you. But..." He hesitated, glancing briefly at the door where the others had left. "It appears that Mr. Price is no longer involved with you. Or rather he is unwilling to go all out to protect you. It is why, we have been trying to nudge you to give up the business. If you do not have adequate protection, things would only get more difficult in the future."

"If you cannot protect yourself, then Miss Edwina strongly suggested you consider giving up now. Our firm will continue investigating, regardless of your decision, and we will do our best to bring the person responsible to justice. But Miss Edwina believed that stepping away would allow you to live in peace, without the constant threat of someone coming after you. It is also why the reading of her will was delayed this long..."

Serena looked up then and gave him a thin smile," Since you are investigating, why don’t you also investigate who attacked me, caused an accident that almost killed me? Owen Thompson was involved in a few cases as well. I think my grandmother was being too optimistic that I would be spared if I don’t cling now. I will be a threat to that person as long as I am breathing..."

"But by harming my people, that person has created a threat to themselves. I won’t rest until I make sure to eliminate them."
