Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 129: A Passenger
Chapter 129: A Passenger
Outside the hotel, Serena paused midstep as Sidney stood, with the car door open for her. It was the same car...Why did he still have such an old car? And why did he not have a driver? She had definitely expected this man to have a driver who would be able to act as a buffer between them.
He seemed to expect her to hesitate, and she could see the anticipation in his eyes, as if he was waiting for her to object to sitting in that cramped space. She hardened her heart against him. He was quite adept at playing games, but she was not the same girl anymore. Without giving him the satisfaction of her reluctance, she slid into the passenger seat of his car, forcing herself to appear nonchalant.
Then she stilled again. Dammit! Why was there sweet and sour chicken lingering in the air? The tantalizing scent wrapped around her like a memory, drawing her back to simpler times. She could guess, of course. First, he’d tried to woo her with pancakes, and when that hadn’t worked, he had kept the chicken and fried rice in the car, hoping to tempt her once more. She clenched her hands, her nails biting into her palms. He really thought it would be that easy to win her back with all this.
As if all the hurt and betrayal could be erased with food. Thankfully, even though the fragrance had shook her and was tempting, she reminded herself of the chicken that Aiden cooked. It was much better than what she had with Sidney. She convinced herself.
"Are you coming in or just going to stand there?", she asked him when he continued to wait there. She liked the disappointed look on his face as he closed the door and stepped back and she was quite satisfied with it. Aiden had been right. He would work as a good shield when it came to Sidney.
"You know, with the papers signed today, you’ll have the final say in quite a few things regarding your future and the Dawns," he began, as he started to drive, "What are your plans?"
Serena crossed her arms, feigning indifference, but inside, she was already weighing her options. "Why are you so concerned about this, Sidney?" she asked, arching an eyebrow. "I didn’t think you’d be interested in the state of my family affairs."
"Of course I am interested. Why do you think your grandmother left me in charge of the execution. Have you thought about it? She wanted me to stop you from doing anything rash! You shouldn’t harm your family just because you think they might have hurt your grandmother or you. Revenge won’t bring you peace, Rena."
"It’s interesting how you sympathize with them all. And I think that they might have hurt me? Have you forgotten the evidence I gathered? The evidence that YOU made disappear. Even now, you have firmly placed yourself on the side of the same family that did their best to harm me and are now pleading on their behalf. And you ask what went wrong." Serena said bitterly."
"I’m not defending them. I just think you’re better than that. Hurting them won’t heal your wounds; it will only create more. Also, the evidence you had was all circumstancial. It would have only revealed that you were suspicious if someone really did harm her! Instead it was better to have investigated privately."
"Really? And did you investigate after you had the evidence? What did you find?"
Serena could see the muscles in his jaw clench as he tried to find the right words, but they eluded him.
"Exactly," she pressed, her voice sharp. "You didn’t find anything, did you? It would have been better to have them know that I was suspicious, that would at least scare them into making a mistake! You had a chance to help me, and you chose to protect them instead." The hurt in her voice cut deeper than she intended, but she didn’t care.
He was not the one who had to suffer the consequences of his actions. He was not the one who had to lie as a corpse in the hospital! He was not the one who had to throw himself at a stranger’s mercy to survive. He was not the one who had to...
She clenched her hands and finally spoke the words in her heart," You’ve made your choicea long time ago, Sideny and I don’t need your pity or your empty concerns at this time. So, I would be really grateful if you will forget the past and just behave as a stranger from now onwards."
"It’s not pity, Rena. I just... I want you to understand that this isn’t a black-and-white situation. Your family is complicated, and yes, they’ve hurt you, but they’re also part of who you are. I don’t want you to lose yourself in this anger."
This time, she did not even give him a reply. All he could do was give her words. And nothing else. She had nothing to say to him. With her head turned, she looked outside the window, immersing herself in her thoughts, hoping this ride would come to an end soon.
However, she could not have expected that the end of the ride would turn out to reveal an even bigger betrayal that she could have imagined.
The moment the car stopped outside the offices of the lawyers, Serena was ready to jump off. However, in the next moment, her eyes saw the entirety of the Dawn family ahaving reached there already. And yet, it was Ava who strode forward as soon as she got out of the car.
"You bi*ch! You’ve returned and already started playing games with me!" As expected, she raised her hand to slep Serena but Serena was already prepared. She caught her wrist and pushed her backwards before glaring at her," If you cannot use your words to talk, don’t think of using your hands. I have no qualms about breaking your bones or sewing your mouth shut!"
