Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 112: Why
Chapter 112: Why
"Are you a pig? Or a glutton?" Sidney teased, leaning back in his chair with a smirk. "The moment I mention food, you start wagging your tail."
Serena paused mid-bite, her chopsticks hovering over her bowl of noodles. She slowly looked up, narrowing her eyes at him. "First of all, you’re quite rude for calling me names just because I enjoy my food. Secondly, pigs don’t wag their tails, Sidney. Dogs do. Get your animals straight at the very least.." She punctuated the correction with a pointed jab of her chopsticks in his direction. "And thirdly, I only accepted your invitation so you wouldn’t feel bad eating alone. But if this is how you’re going to behave, maybe you can eat by yourself tomorrow."
Sidney groaned, rolling his eyes. "Relax! I was just joking. It’s actually a good thing you have a healthy appetite, okay? You’re too skinny as it is."
Serena’s eyebrows shot up, and her voice dripped with sarcasm. "Oh, I see. So if I were fat, I should skip meals? Is that what you’re trying to say?"
Sidney froze, his eyes wide with realization that he’d stepped into dangerous territory. He quickly raised his hands in surrender. "Whoa, whoa, no! I’m not saying that at all! Don’t go putting words in my mouth. I just meant it’s nice to see you have a healthy appetite!"
Serena leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms, her gaze unwavering. "Mm-hmm. And you’re not one of those people who think fat-shaming is a joke, right? Just because someone isn’t skinny, they shouldn’t enjoy their food? Is that your angle?"
Sidney groaned inwardly, knowing he was in a losing battle. He could never win an argument with Serena—she always found a way to turn the tables on him. It was why she was the debate team leader already... "No! I’m not fat-shaming anyone! You know what? Forget I said anything. It’s great that you eat well. Please, eat as much as you like. Just don’t accuse me of saying something I never meant."
Serena arched an eyebrow, her lips curving into a knowing smile as she resumed eating. "Good. I only accepted your invitation so you wouldn’t feel bad eating alone. But if you’re going to keep acting like this, maybe you can
eat alone from tomorrow onwards."Sidney sighed, slumping in his chair. "Why do I even bother? I swear, I can’t say anything without you twisting it into some kind of crime."
"You bother because you are a masochist and trying to argue with me and win keeps your brain sharp."
Sidney shook his head and bowed his head," Amazing... you are absolutely correct, master. It is only because of you that I have not devolved into a lesser intellingent being."
While the two people continued to eat and chat, they failed to notice a sleek black car that had slowed down at the intersection.
Inside, an older woman with sharp eyes sat up straighter in her seat. Her gaze swept over the people on the street until it landed on a familiar figure. She narrowed her eyes, focusing on Serena, who was laughing with Sidney at the stall.
The woman’s eyes didn’t leave Serena, her expression growing more intense with each second. "Is that... my granddaughter?"
Her assistant, seated beside her, turned to face her with a questioning look.
The assistant followed her gaze, squinting to get a better look. "Miss Ava? I doubt ma’am. She would not eat at such places."
"Not her! The granddaughter I brought home about half a year ago. "It could be, ma’am," he replied hesitantly. After all, he had seen the girl only once. "Should I go and—?"
"Call her," the woman snapped, her patience wearing thin. "Ask her where she is and tell her to come see me. Now."
The assistant hurriedly reached for his phone and dialed Serena’s number. The woman watched from the car as her assistant pressed the phone to his ear.
At the stall, Serena’s phone buzzed on the table. She glanced down at the screen, recognizing the caller ID. It was her grandmother’s assistant. For a moment, her hand hovered over the phone, her lips twisting in a slight frown. But after a brief pause, she tapped the screen and silenced the call, turning her attention back to her noodles without missing a beat.
The older woman’s eyes flashed with fury as she saw Serena blatantly ignore the call. "She didn’t even pick up," the assistant whispered nervously, lowering the phone.
"I saw that," the woman snapped, her tone cold and cutting. "That girl has the nerve to ignore me?"
Her jaw clenched, and she leaned back against the seat, eyes still fixed on Serena from the tinted car window. She seethed in silence for a moment before waving a hand dismissively. "Drive."
Even as the driver knew that the lady was not upset at him, he quicky drove away, thanking the fates that the light had turned green at the last moment...
They drove in silence for the next few minutes before she ordered the assistant," Message her to come see me at 7.30. And tell her that if she doesn’t come on time, she be ready to pack her bags and leave for some foster home."
As the assistant hurriedly messaged her, the woman frowned angrily, vowing to herself that she would regret this! The girl was not even fifteen yet and already knew how to go out on dates with boys! Just like her tr*mp of a mother! There was no way she was going to let besmirch the Dawn name with such antics.
This evening, she would show the girl that she if she could give her all the luxuries then she could definitely take them away as well.
Back at the stall, Sidney glanced at Serena as she ignored the call and raised an eyebrow,"Aren’t you going to answer that?"
"I don’t want to."
"For all the time, I’ve known you, you have not received a single call. And the first time you get it, you ignore it?"
"You’ve only known me a couple of months, okay? So, it doesn’t count. And don’t think I haven’t noticed you ignoring your stepmother’s calls..."
