Chapter 45 - The Vast Sea Whale Song Armor

Chapter 45: The Vast Sea Whale Song Armor

No sooner had Wu Yuan returned to the courier station than an unexpected intelligence report landed on his desk—courtesy of Chuanyu Tower.

Though Chuanyu Tower’s headquarters building was still under construction, with the help of secondary Mist-Shadow Cloaks, their intelligence network had rapidly expanded. They could now monitor an area spanning a hundred miles.

Wu Yuan had placed considerable trust in Luo Xiangluo, so much so that she had urgently requested ten Blood Essence Pills as a reward even before the headquarters was complete. One of these pills was specifically designated for the spy who had discovered the secondary elemental stone mine, to kickstart his cultivation.

Wu Yuan approved.

Between ongoing use and rewards, his stock of Blood Essence Pills had dwindled to just nine—though this didn’t account for the ninety pills he had recovered from the merchant caravan’s luggage three days prior.

Luo Xiangluo had earned Wu Yuan’s trust—not just because she was of the Eastern Jin lineage, but because of her results.

The new intelligence concerned the Demon Insect Hills.

Though geographically, the area from Hongye Cliff to the highway—a span of 120 miles—was labeled as part of the Demon Insect Hills, the true territory began 180 miles north of the cliff. That was where the real dangers lurked.

From the east and south, within a radius of ten thousand miles, Hongye Cliff was the only practical entry point into the Demon Insect Hills.

However, approaching from the west or north, travelers didn’t need to pass through Hongye Cliff—those directions offered multiple access routes.

The Demon Insect Hills themselves spanned five thousand miles, teeming with deadly insects and demonic humanoids. Few had ever ventured into its heart. Even mercenaries and martial artists who entered for resources rarely strayed more than two or three hundred miles from the edges.

Generally, mercenaries from the east and south had little interest in the Demon Insect Hills—they had other options along their routes. Thus, sightings of them near Hongye Cliff were rare.

But those from the west and north showed far greater interest—those edges were often bustling.

Chuanyu Tower’s report focused on movement along the western edge of the Demon Insect Hills. Specifically, two mercenary teams had circled around from that direction and were now roughly two hundred miles from Hongye Cliff.

This intelligence came from two spies who had boldly ventured fifty miles beyond the current surveillance range, scaling a small hill to observe from a distance. Further details would require additional scouting.

On the surface, it was a vague report—but Luo Xiangluo deemed it important enough to bring to Wu Yuan.

Wu Yuan shared her assessment—and then some. He didn’t just see importance; he saw an opportunity.

Because he knew the origins of those two mercenary teams—and why they were here.

Fragments from his dream memories contained stories of these two teams battling fiercely in the Demon Insect Hills. Though the details were secondhand, they provided enough context for Wu Yuan to piece together the broader picture—and recognize the opportunity.

His mind raced. He had assumed this event would occur much later—if at all—perhaps at a time when he’d no longer care. Yet here it was, unfolding far sooner than expected.

After careful consideration, he made a bold decision: he would personally investigate the Demon Insect Hills.

Three days ago—before uncovering the merchant caravan’s hidden trove—he might have considered this too risky. But now, armed with the spirit artifacts Huan Su had concealed in his luggage, the danger level had dropped significantly.

Without hesitation, he blood-bound the low-grade spirit artifact—Vast Sea Whale Song Armor—and donned it.

This was a high-value set, complete with matching boots. In truth, it surpassed even the mid-grade Dragon Mountain Clear Autumn Robe three-piece set that Huan Su had once worn.

But Huan Su, a pure merchant, hadn’t recognized its worth. He knew only that the Dragon Mountain set offered high defense and evasion—unaware that the Vast Sea Armor’s innate “Whale Song Deterrence” could stun enemies for three seconds if their strength was vastly inferior. Combined with the spirit boots’ speed boost, escape chances skyrocketed.

Of course, Wu Yuan also considered the Dragon Mountain set inadequate because the one stripped from Huan Su was slightly damaged. Without a master artificer’s repairs, wearing it would be unwise.

Spirit artifacts adjusted to their wearer’s form. The Vast Sea Armor fit snugly the moment he put it on.

Thanks to the Soul-Shifting Mask’s disguise, Wu Yuan currently appeared as a burly, bearded man. The armor added a domineering aura, making him seem almost intimidating.

His second source of confidence was the Hidden Blade Cloak—a standalone high-grade spirit artifact, equally suited for offense and defense.

For offense: thirty-two concealed blades could shoot from the cloak to strike enemies.

For defense: it could mimic plants, earth, or stone, concealing his presence. Only extreme threats or those with supernatural perception could see through it—far surpassing the secondary Mist-Shadow Cloak’s invisibility by several orders of magnitude.

If Chuanyu Tower’s spies could scout within 150 miles of the Demon Insect Hills, their leader had no excuse to hesitate—especially now that he had reached the high Bone-Forging Realm. It was time to venture out.

If he stayed holed up too long, his courage would wither. No matter how high his cultivation climbed, he’d just become another Huan Su.

Lastly, he took the top-grade spirit artifact—Dragon Mountain Fine Rain Sword.

With the blade in hand, sword techniques from his dream memories flashed through his mind. Pride surged in his heart, dispelling all hesitation and fear.

He summoned Cai Yu for brief instructions, sent messages to Chuanyu Tower and the wooden fort, then packed supplies and mounted a Flatland Horse from the station’s newly built stables.

Galloping northwest, he soon passed a small open-pit elemental coal mine three miles out. Reining in his horse, he inspected it briefly.

The site matched the survey reports, though something felt off—a discrepancy he noted for later investigation.

After a short delay, he rode on.

The pathless terrain was rough, but the Flatland Horse handled it effortlessly, moving several times faster than on foot.

Along the way, he occasionally spotted demonic humanoids and deadly insects charging toward the courier station. Even formidable foes like Purple Demons and Iron Chariot Beetles—once difficult to handle—now appeared sporadically. Lower-tier threats like Green Demons and Millstone Insects were oddly scarce. Clearly, the station’s upgrade had attracted stronger monsters.

But he wasn’t worried.

The second-tier Tiger Spirit Aura was absurdly overpowered—within 500 meters of the station, monster levels dropped by 15, effectively reducing their strength by nearly four major realms. A peak Blood-Coagulation Realm monster near the station would be weakened to early Skin-Shedding Realm—easy prey.

This made the Spirit Source Courier Station a literal meat grinder for monsters—worth every penny.

It was a shame such ancient stations were rare. If they were common, conquering the wilderness would be effortless—one territory at a time.

Thankfully, fate had granted him the Spirit Source Courier Station, compensating for two wasted lifetimes in his dreams. Now, like a dragon breaking free, he soared.

As he encountered stronger demonic humanoids and insects, he activated the Hidden Blade Cloak’s stealth function.

Though it couldn’t fully conceal the Flatland Horse, monsters only heard hoofbeats without seeing the source. Occasionally, they noticed strange movements—but all they glimpsed were shifting plants and rocks.
