Chapter 99: Chapter 99 I’m Only Interested in You.
Shen Zhiyi actually had no experience in taking care of children. The proposal to take care of Duan Jiaze was a spur of the moment decision; the child was both well-behaved and cute, too irresistible.
Fortunately, Duan Jiaze was very sensible. Apart from filling a whole shopping cart with snacks, he did not have any difficult demands, and he was not shy at all. Just like that, he followed Shen Zhiyi home.
Xiaodong was at Shen Zhiyi’s home arranging gifts sent by a brand, and when he turned his head, he saw a mixed-race child and almost fell over in fright.
Duan Jiaze looked at her for a while before turning to find Shen Zhiyi, his voice clear, "Zhizhi!"
He had learned to call her that after hearing Pei Yu do it. Pei Yu wouldn’t allow him to call her mom, and he was obedient. Now that he had learned a new Chinese term, he kept calling her "Zhizhi" nonstop.
Xiaodong asked blankly, "Sis, is this your son?"
Shen Zhiyi was speechless, "Do we look alike?"
"Then whose child is this?"
The specific situation was hard to explain, and mentioning it would bring up Pei Yu. Shen Zhiyi vaguely answered, "Just a relative’s child, staying with me for a few days."
Having not worked with Shen Zhiyi for long, Xiaodong was unaware that she actually had no contact with her relatives back home. Believing her explanation, Xiaodong took some photos of the child with interest.
"It’s just a bit chubby," she commented.
The child was clever and could tell from the tone that it wasn’t a compliment, and feeling aggrieved, he went to complain to Shen Zhiyi. Even though he couldn’t explain it well, it didn’t matter; whenever he felt wronged, Shen Zhiyi would comfort him.
"You spoil the child too much," Xiaodong shook her head, sighing as she left.
Before bedtime, Pei Yu initiated a video call, and as soon as the call connected, there appeared the child’s plump chubby face. He looked indifferent and disdainfully spoke in French, "Move it farther away."
The child obediently moved his face away and asked him, "When is uncle coming back?"
The camera showed only the empty living room. Pei Yu, distracted, replied, "Tomorrow."
"And her?"
The child blinked, "Zhizhi?"
Upon hearing this, Pei Yu’s face turned cold, and his eyebrows slightly furrowed, "Don’t call her that."
Duan Jiaze nearly cried out of fright; he couldn’t call her mom, and now he couldn’t call her Zhizhi either.
Pei Yu reluctantly mustered some patience and taught him, "You should call her aunty."
It was a strange word for the child, who struggled to understand and stuttered, "What’s an aunty?"
All he knew were the terms uncle and mom, but not aunty.
Shen Zhiyi appeared in the background of the camera; she was tidying up things, unaware of the conversation happening here.
His expression softening momentarily, Pei Yu lowered his eyes, chuckling softly, his eyes fondly narrowed, "She’s my wife."
Duan Jiaze learned something new that day, understanding that an uncle’s wife should be called aunty. He had gotten used to calling her mom very smoothly, but calling her aunty was still awkward. Pei Yu mandated that he practice privately and even arranged a Chinese tutor for him to urgently enhance his lessons.
Shen Zhiyi came over to tell the child to go to sleep and saw him holding the phone, video calling with Pei Yu.
An uncle always has to take care of his nephew. Shen Zhiyi thought he wanted to ask about Duan Jiaze, so she recounted what they had done that day, what they had bought to eat, drink, and even clothes.
"Does he have any allergies?"
Pei Yu was not interested in what Duan Jiaze ate or where he stayed, but she was rarely willing to talk more with him. He did not want to interrupt and responded perfunctorily, "No."
If the child had any allergies, he wouldn’t be able to eat so much and get that chubby.
"Okay," Shen Zhiyi nodded, "He—"
"Let’s not talk about him anymore," Pei Yu glanced at the time, as if complaining, "For a whole six minutes, you’ve only talked about him."
He isn’t even comparable to a little brat.
Shen Zhiyi didn’t look at the camera, her eyelashes trembling slightly, "Don’t you care about him?"
It’s the kid’s real uncle, after all, the child has been talking about him all day, saying the uncle is a jerk, but still really misses the uncle.
"No," Pei Yu denied without hesitation, casting his eyes down to her pale side face on the screen, there was a faint scratch near her neck that looked very glaring, he said slowly, "I’m only interested in you."
The pale side of her face gradually took on a slight blush, Shen Zhiyi felt guilty, afraid of being seen through, and hurriedly hung up the call, "I’m going to sleep."
Looking at the already disconnected call interface, Pei Yu replied to a message from his older sister.
The closer people are to him, the more they understand his temper, and after the impulse, the older sister regretted leaving the child back in the country. She knew Pei Yu was ruthless—if he said he wouldn’t care, he wouldn’t. The Qin Family was still outsiders, and she wasn’t very reassured, so she wanted to send someone to fetch the child back.
She carefully broached the topic, "Xiaoran said the kid is with a friend of hers, I’ll send someone tomorrow to pick him up, if you have time, do take a moment to see Jiaze, he misses you quite a lot."
The reason Duan Jiaze felt so close to this uncle he seldom saw was partly because his mother deliberately made it so, always reminding the child to please the uncle. But the most important thing was the unique chemistry between this uncle and nephew, the child indeed liked this uncle, although Pei Yu found him quite annoying.
Pei Yu said indifferently, "Let him stay a few more days."
Although annoying, she likes him, he could stay a few more days, at least until he learns the term "aunt."
"Really?"
The woman, pleasantly surprised, asked, "You’re going to take care of him?"
Since Duan Jiaze was only four years old and didn’t really read adult expressions, his mother sometimes found her son annoying and couldn’t believe Pei Yu would agree to take care of this little brat.
"Hmm?" Pei Yu raised an eyebrow, "Of course not."
Tapping his fingers lightly on the table, he thought about how to make use of the little brat, and said offhand, "He has someone to take care of him."
When it came to winning Shen Zhiyi’s favor, he was probably more useful than this uncle.
"Is it Xiaoran’s friend?"
Since she was seldom in the country and didn’t know how reliable this friend of Qin Xiaoran was, the woman was a bit worried, half apprehensive, half expectant, she asked, "Can’t you take him to your side?"
If she could use this opportunity to get on good terms with Pei Yu, she’d gladly leave her son in the country.
Understanding the hidden meaning in the woman’s words, Pei Yu’s expression turned cold, indifferent to her scheming, "I will visit him."
Visiting him, not bringing him to Huating, the difference in those few words meant a lot, the woman’s eyes turned mournful, eager to push a bit harder, "Jiaze is very shy and doesn’t interact well with strangers, and we don’t know what kind of person Xiaoran’s friend is, are you sure Jiaze will be okay with her?"
"She’s very good."
Not tolerating any criticism of Shen Zhiyi, Pei Yu’s tone grew colder and his patience waned, "Your son is doing fine there. If you’re so worried, come and take him back yourself."
Shy? He seems about to cling to Shen Zhiyi already.
The woman immediately fell silent, perhaps sensing something and couldn’t help but finally ask, "Do you know Xiaoran’s friend?"
With a slight lift of his eyes, Pei Yu spoke expressionlessly, "I knew her before Qin Xiaoran did."
Friend? Qin Xiaoran sure knows how to put things mildly.
