Chapter 214: Chapter 212: Many more years will be spent like this.

Considering Xiaoshi showed considerable determination in this regard, Shen Zhiyi still expressed her support and tried to contact the directors she had worked with before to see if they needed a child actor.

"What kind...," Shen Zhiyi thought for a moment, "a very handsome little boy, exceptionally smart."

She disliked exposing too much of her private life in public, especially regarding Pei Yu and Xiaoshi. From Xiaoshi’s birth to now, not a single photo of him had been leaked. Except for a few crew members, no one else knew Xiaoshi was her child.

A few days later, Xiaoshi got an audition opportunity. He was particularly excited, carefully studied the script required for the audition, and went to the audition location accompanied by Secretary Qin.

Whether it was due to the influence he had been exposed to from a young age or a natural talent that became apparent, Xiaoshi smoothly secured his first performance opportunity. He played the protagonist’s brother in a live-action film adaptation, a role with quite some significance.

On the day he joined the group, Shen Zhiyi and Pei Yu also went. Watching him play a lonely and gloomy boy, completely different from his own personality, felt particularly magical.

"If he really becomes an actor," Shen Zhiyi couldn’t help but laugh, "it seems he could do better than me."

Pei Yu looked down and said, "He is very spiritual."

The child really was talented, excelling in everything he did.

After acting in two films and shooting several fashion commercials, Xiaoshi had already made a name for himself in the entertainment industry. He was so handsome that gaining fans was easy whenever he was exposed to the public.

Then he announced his retirement.

The retirement ceremony was very grand. He announced to everyone in his small study that he had decided to follow Pei Yu to learn at the company.

Pei Yu: "...I didn’t agree."

Yes, it was Xiaoshi’s unilateral decision.

Ignoring his father’s words, he looked at Shen Zhiyi and said in a somewhat sad tone, "Mom, do you also think I can’t do well?"

Shen Zhiyi immediately shook her head, "How could that be, our Xiaoshi is amazing at everything."

"I think so too," Xiaoshi sneakily glanced at Pei Yu, "I do everything very well, even acting."

Why did Dad think he wouldn’t be able to handle the company?

Since he was so insistent, Pei Yu eventually took him to the company and left him with the secretarial department.

"What should I do?" Xiaoshi asked seriously, "What can I do?"

Secretary Qin arranged a task for him.

In the office, Pei Yu was signing documents when he heard knocking at the door followed by footsteps.

A childish voice said, "Chairman Pei, your coffee."

His hand trembled, drawing a long line across the document.

Pei Yu looked up, expressionless, and after a long moment, asked, "What are you doing?"

"Bringing Chairman Pei his coffee," Xiaoshi stated matter-of-factly, "This is my job."

Pei Yu had not actually assigned him any tasks, but once Xiaoshi had entered the secretarial department, he considered himself a member and naturally took on its tasks.

"...Put it down," Pei Yu said with a hint of amusement. This kid never did any serving at home, but he was learning it in the office.

But the secretarial department’s tasks involved more than just serving tea and coffee. Xiaoshi spent a day there, watching them busily go back and forth, listening to them communicate on all kinds of matters, and deeply felt that working was not easy.

This was just a small department in his father’s company.

Afterward, for a period of time, Xiaoshi came to the office every day to clock in, had stayed in every department. Although he was just a child, he was not without understanding; he never ran around or played in the company, nor did he trouble anyone. Most of the time, he just sat in his place, keenly observing others’ actions, and would look up anything he didn’t understand or ask Pei Yu when he got home.

As time went on, Pei Yu began to take him along everywhere, whether it was for meetings or negotiating collaborations, allowing him to follow by his side, teaching him more and more.

One evening, he took Xiaoshi back to Huating and asked him if he was still as interested in work as before.

Kids, just seeking novelty, who really takes an interest in work?

Xiaoshi was silent for a while before telling him, "Dad, I still want to follow you."

This somewhat baffled Pei Yu.

Before going to sleep, he discussed this matter with Shen Zhiyi and showed a puzzled expression, "What is Xiaoshi really thinking?"

Adults always find it hard to understand children’s thoughts.

Shen Zhiyi, being hugged from behind, raised her hand to touch his head resting on her shoulder, "How long has he been going with you to the company?"

"More than four months," Pei Yu kissed her earlobe, "By rights, he should have had enough by now."

Although they just assumed Xiaoshi was playing, the child actually did very well, never causing trouble, and sometimes Pei Yu would even forget his presence.

Shen Zhiyi thought about it too, pushing his head away, "I’ll go ask."

Xiaoshi was very close to Pei Yu, but truth be told, he talked more with Shen Zhiyi; with Pei Yu’s nature, it was unrealistic to expect him to kindly and softly engage with a child.

Pei Yu "hmmed" and followed behind Shen Zhiyi.

Shen Zhiyi entered Xiaoshi’s bedroom, leaving the door slightly ajar, and Pei Yu stood quietly at the door listening.

"Xiaoshi," Shen Zhiyi held the child in her arms. He had grown a lot taller, not as easy to hold as when he was little. Xiaoshi spontaneously wrapped his arms and legs around her, mischievously, clearly still a child. She patted Xiaoshi’s back, "Were these days going to the company with Dad very boring?"

"A bit," Xiaoshi nodded honestly, not just because the work was boring, but more so because there was no one to talk to.

Shen Zhiyi then asked, "Was it also very tiring?"

Xiaoshi nodded even more dramatically, "Super tiring."

No job required a child’s involvement, but Xiaoshi’s brain was constantly active, dealing with those complex issues he didn’t understand, which was very tiring.

"Then how about we don’t go to the company with Dad anymore, okay?"

Xiaoshi was silent for a moment, then shook his head and lay on Shen Zhiyi’s shoulder, "No, Mommy."

Shen Zhiyi asked in confusion, "Why not?"

Xiaoshi hugged her, speaking in a somewhat low tone, "Dad works very hard, I want to be with Dad."

Even though no one had deliberately instilled this idea in him, he had vaguely understood that he was to share his father’s burdens. He was Pei Yu’s only child, the one most suited to take over Pei’s.

Shen Zhiyi’s heart softened, "Baby, did you decide to do this because you feel sorry for Dad?"

Xiaoshi was somewhat embarrassed and softly "hmmed."

Pei Yu pushed the door open and stood there quietly.

Shen Zhiyi looked over and said with a smile, "Xiaoshi really loves you, Pei Yu."

"And loves Mommy," Xiaoshi stood up, asking his father to hold him, knowing that Pei Yu could lift him easily and it wouldn’t be tiring like it was for Mommy.

Pei Yu kissed him on the forehead, "Good baby."

Shen Zhiyi smiled faintly, looking at the faces of the father and son that were becoming more alike, feeling secure and happy inside.

She knew they would spend many more years like this.
