Chapter 205: Chapter 205 Xiaoshi.
Shen Zhiyi was pushed into the operating room actually a day before her due date. Before falling asleep, she suddenly began to experience regular contractions and was then ready to give birth. Everyone was prepared and moved methodically, even she herself was not very scared, just in great pain.
Considering her situation, the doctors recommended a natural birth, which had been agreed upon beforehand, and family members were even allowed to enter the operating room to accompany her. Shen Zhiyi only waited for a moment before Pei Yu came in, holding her hand tightly.
Shen Zhiyi looked into his eyes and silently smiled at him.
The doctor told her to relax, then to push hard, also suggesting that the family member say something to ease her mood.
But Pei Yu couldn’t utter a word, his throat blocked by an inexplicable emotion. Although it was Shen Zhiyi who was giving birth, he seemed to bear a tremendous pain.
Outsiders couldn’t see his emotions, and his face didn’t show much expression, but Shen Zhiyi knew him well. She didn’t want to see Pei Yu so upset, and looking at the ceiling of the operating room, she thought vaguely, Baby, please take pity on your dad for mom...
It wasn’t clear if the baby really was that obedient or if Shen Zhiyi had put in enough effort herself, but as her strength left her body, she heard the clear cry of a newborn.
The baby’s umbilical cord was cut by Pei Yu himself.
Shen Zhiyi was too tired, so she fell into a deep sleep before she could get a good look at the baby.
After two hours of observation in the delivery room, Shen Zhiyi was brought back to her original ward. She hadn’t slept long and woke up to find Pei Yu still holding her hand. Seeing her eyes open, he then showed a faint smile.
Shen Zhiyi smiled as well and asked him quietly, "Were you scared?"
Pei Yu softly "mm-hmmed", and apologized in a low voice because he indeed hadn’t been any help, not even managing to utter words of comfort.
"Do we even need to say that between us?" Shen Zhiyi didn’t like hearing him apologize and changed the subject, "Where’s the baby? I haven’t seen him yet."
The baby was quickly brought over. The little one was healthy, just lighter in weight compared to most boys—after all, he had been quite small inside Shen Zhiyi’s belly. The doctors said he wouldn’t be any less healthy than his peers as long as his nutrition was kept up, with genetics speaking for themselves.
Shen Zhiyi observed him for a while. The baby still hadn’t opened his eyes, his skin was red and a bit swollen, not quite like what she had imagined.
"The appearance of a newborn will change; you have to wait a few more months," Pei Yu seemed to see what she was thinking and explained aloud.
Shen Zhiyi immediately breathed a sigh of relief, "That’s good."
It wasn’t that she found the baby ugly... although he didn’t look very cute at the moment. She mainly felt that the baby didn’t resemble Pei Yu much, but hoped he would after growing a bit more.
Pei Yu felt the same way, hoping the baby would look like Shen Zhiyi. The current appearance didn’t match what he had imagined at all.
Before long, as daybreak approached, Qin Xiaoran came in a hurry. After visiting the baby, she came back and hesitated to speak to Shen Zhiyi, "He looks so wrinkled..."
She had thought she would meet a delicately carved baby.
"They all look like this at birth," Shen Zhiyi was eating porridge and lifted her phone to show her the photos of the baby she took earlier, "Doesn’t he look better in comparison?"
The appearance of a newborn changes very quickly, almost looking different every moment. Qin Xiaoran looked and felt reassured about her nephew once again.
"Just as I thought, with parents like you, how could the child be ugly? He’ll look better as he grows."
She took out a gift box from her bag, "Open it and see, I think you’ll definitely like it."
"You’re giving me a gift already?" Shen Zhiyi was slightly surprised and upon opening it found a sapphire necklace. It was very glossy and translucent. Zhiyi smiled with her eyes curved, "It’s beautiful."
Qin Xiaoran was extremely pleased, "Am I the first to give you a gift?"
Shen Zhiyi smiled and lifted her hand to show her a milky white jade bracelet with delicate engravings on her wrist. From the quality of it, one could tell it was rare, "Pei Yu got ahead of you."
Qin Xiaoran suddenly felt deflated, "Ah, how can he be so quick."
A moment later, Qin Fang and Fu Songzhi joined them. The two gazed at the baby for a long time, appearing slightly surprised.
"Does he look more like Brother Pei?" Qin Fang asked after taking a closer look.
"What can you see now?" Fu Songzhi took several photos of the baby. "The features haven’t even fully developed yet."
For the moment, all one could tell was that the child had a high nose bridge, but it was unclear who he resembled.
He turned his head to look at Pei Yu and asked, "Have you named the child yet?"
Pei Yu hummed in affirmation.
"Pei Shi."
The Shi of time. Shen Zhiyi was the one who chose the name. She pondered deeply to come up with a name for the baby, with a long list of possible names, all with their own meanings, but she couldn’t make up her mind. Only nearing the due date did she decide, and after much consideration, chose the simplest one.
The hospital room bustled with activity throughout the day. Shen Zhiyi met with several friends, and she received a pile of gifts. In the evening, the baby was brought to her side again. Watching Pei Yu handle the tiny body of the baby with practiced movements, she found it extraordinary.
Such a personality as Pei Yu’s also had such great patience for a tiny child.
Noticing Shen Zhiyi’s gaze, Pei Yu looked up, "Do you want to hold him?"
Shen Zhiyi hesitated for a moment, then shook her head, saying with a hint of embarrassment, "I’m afraid to."
The baby was so small that she felt he might break at the slightest touch.
She wasn’t like Pei Yu, who had learned in advance. She really didn’t dare to hold him.
Pei Yu chuckled softly, not insisting. Holding the baby himself was fine, and he slightly turned his body to let her see the child who was fast asleep, especially quiet. The redness in the skin had faded a bit, turning into a soft pink, and the swollen eyelids had subsided some, perhaps by tomorrow he would be able to open his eyes.
Shen Zhiyi gently touched his small hand; the softness was extraordinary, "Xiaoshi."
This was hers and Pei Yu’s child.
She looked up at Pei Yu, her eyes curving into a smile, "What were you thinking the first time you saw him?"
The first time Pei Yu saw him was when the nurse held the baby for him to cut the umbilical cord. His heart had still been hanging by a thread, his hand trembling. He only spared a glance at the baby before his attention swiftly returned to Shen Zhiyi.
After thinking for a bit, he said, "I thought he was very small, exceptionally small."
Such a tiny baby had been nurtured inside Shen Zhiyi’s body for so long.
He was the youngest child of the Pei Family, and his only notion of children came from Duan Jiaze. However, when he had first met his nephew, Duan Jiaze was no longer an infant but a lively child who could run and jump. This was the truly first time Pei Yu saw a newborn, and it was his own child.
"He will grow up," Shen Zhiyi held the little fingers, "He’ll grow as big as Jiaze, and he’ll call you dad."
If he were an active child, he might be as noisy as Duan Jiaze, calling out "Dad, dad" incessantly every day.
Thinking this, Pei Yu laughed.
