Chapter 195 - I Can’t Leave You Anymore.
Chapter 195: 195 Chapter I Can’t Leave You Anymore.
The hall was not exactly quiet, with several actors who had already gotten drunk talking loudly, their assistants following them around, trying to steady them and ceaselessly urging them to quiet down amidst the noisy commotion.
Pei Yu did not like the smell of cheap, inferior alcohol and indifferently stepped aside to avoid it.
After finishing the call, Secretary Qin said, "Xiaodong says madam is in the hall."
Only then did Pei Yu lift his gaze and carefully scan the few people around, spotting the person he was looking for in a corner, the corners of his lips silently curving up.
She seemed to have had a bit to drink and looked somewhat sluggish, lips pursed and eyelids drooping; usually such an expression meant unhappiness, but it was uncertain what the reason was.
Pei Yu walked over to her.
As she sat with her head drooping in a daze, footsteps grew nearer and nearer until they stopped right in front of Shen Zhiyi, who looked up slightly, her gaze still a bit vacant.
Groggily, she thought, why does this person even look so much like Pei Yu front-on?
Pei Yu took another step forward, coming very close.
Before she could react, she felt that even the faint scent of agarwood on him was identical to that of Pei Yu.
She sat there, looking dazed, showing no reaction even when she saw him.
Pei Yu’s eyebrows lifted slightly, "What, you don’t recognize your own husband anymore?"
His voice sounded the same too... Shen Zhiyi suddenly widened her eyes in disbelief and tilted her head hesitantly, "Pei Yu?"
Pei Yu’s expression remained calm as he touched her cheek flushed from drinking and said in a tranquil voice, "It’s only been a few days since I left, have you forgotten me completely?"
Though he wasn’t reproaching her, he clearly wasn’t pleased.
At this moment, however, Shen Zhiyi was completely oblivious to this. She stared blankly at Pei Yu for a while, and once she was certain that the person before her was her husband, her eyes suddenly creased into a smile, "Pei Yu!"
She looked extremely happy as she threw herself into his arms with that call and was securely wrapped up in a full embrace by Pei Yu.
A hint of amusement appeared in Pei Yu’s eyes, "It seems you’re not too horribly drunk."
He steadied her in his arms and just as he was about to speak, Shen Zhiyi, holding his shoulders, kissed him hard on the lips, with enough force to make a sound.
Pei Yu was taken aback a little, as she seldom got so excited.
"What’s the matter?" he asked quietly, his gaze gentle, "Are you that happy to see me?"
"Mhm!" Shen Zhiyi, embracing his neck, kept her eyes intently fixed on him with affection, not blinking at all. She kissed his chin several times before nuzzling his neck and murmured softly, "I missed you so much."
It was his first time seeing her act so clingy, and Pei Yu was surprised. He swallowed hard, the smile in his eyes growing deeper as he held her and walked away, "I was only gone a few days, I thought you wouldn’t mind."
Every time they had work and needed to be apart, it was usually Pei Yu who was more affected. Shen Zhiyi seemed quite used to it, even indifferent, and it was always Pei Yu who couldn’t wait to find every possible way to return as soon as he could.
Therefore, Shen Zhiyi’s behaviour tonight was quite the pleasant surprise for Pei Yu.
On the way home, Shen Zhiyi kept holding Pei Yu, not letting go. She wasn’t sleepy anymore and looked at him with energy, sometimes touching his fingers, sometimes kissing his face.
Secretary Qin in the front seat didn’t mean to watch, but he still inadvertently caught a glimpse, his surprise no less than that of Pei Yu. In his eyes, Shen Zhiyi was usually much more steady in matters of the heart than Chairman Pei.
Pei Yu was quite enjoying the moment, letting her fiddle with him as she pleased. He thought she must have had more to drink than usual to be acting like this and guessed that she might have drunk more tonight than normal.
"Today I mistook someone else for you," Shen Zhiyi, leaning on his shoulder, was still bothered by the incident, frowning, "Even though he looked nothing like you."
Pei Yu stroked her warm cheek and asked softly, "Are you drunk?"
That’s why you mistook someone else for me.
"No," Shen Zhiyi grasped his fingers, "I didn’t drink any alcohol at that time."
She looked up at him with focused eyes, the colorful lights outside the window reflecting in her eyes, turning into twinkling stars, "I just missed you too much."
Because she missed him so much, everyone she looked at resembled him.
Pei Yu was taken aback, overwhelmed by her sudden sweet words. He knew Shen Zhiyi missed him, but he had never expected her to miss him to this extent.
He couldn’t help but lower his head and briefly pressed his lips against hers before quickly pulling away, because he wanted to hear her speak more than he wanted to be intimate in that moment, "You should have told me earlier."
Shen Zhiyi blinked, "I did tell you."
She had said something similar over the phone, but Pei Yu had thought it was just to appease him.
He lowered his gaze, his fingertips gently rubbing her lips, his voice barely audible, "My mistake."
He had underestimated his place in Shen Zhiyi’s heart.
The two returned to Huating, and Shen Zhiyi was somewhat sleepy from the alcohol. Pei Yu carried her, helped her wash up, and tucked her into bed.
Pei Yu took some time with his own washing up, thinking she would be asleep when he returned, but instead, he walked straight into her bright, shining eyes. Although she was extremely drowsy, she had not fallen asleep by herself.
He lifted the blanket, scooped her into his arms, and recalling the butler’s words, his brow furrowed slightly. He asked in a gentle voice, "Have you been having insomnia these past few days?"
Her sleep quality had always been good. Even if she had to shoot night scenes for days, she would adjust her schedule back within a day or two, and he had never seen her suffering from insomnia before.
Worried that she might be troubled by something, Pei Yu wanted to get to the bottom of it.
Shen Zhiyi nestled in his arms, her voice a bit muffled, "Mhm."
Pei Yu then looked down at her, asking patiently, "What caused the sudden insomnia?"
She tended to share good news but not the worries. Even though Pei Yu was always attentive, he inevitably missed things. If he didn’t ask, she wouldn’t speak up and would just keep it to herself.
"I didn’t know why at first," Shen Zhiyi said with half-lowered eyes, looking somewhat weary. After a pause, she continued, "I understood when I saw you."
She kissed him on the chest, "It seems to be because you weren’t by my side."
"I’m not used to it. I keep waking up at night. When I wake up and realize you’re not there, I feel empty inside, and no matter what, I can’t fall back asleep."
Having lived together for less than a year, she already found it unbearable to sleep without his company. She felt insecure and saw his shadow in everyone.
Pei Yu was silent for a long time, lost in her words. After they were apart, his own sleep hadn’t been much better. This had been the case for a long time, but he had never expected her to have the same reaction as him now.
Blessed with company in sleep after a long time, Shen Zhiyi’s drowsiness deepened, and she felt very reassured. She knew she definitely wouldn’t wake up without reason tonight.
She closed her eyes and whispered, "Pei Yu, I might truly be unable to leave you."
Every separation thereafter would be a significant challenge for her.
Pei Yu’s gaze was serene. Only when her breathing became steady and soft did he dare to lightly touch her lips, as if afraid to disturb her, "It’s my honor."
