Chapter 194: Mistaking the Wrong Husband
Chapter 194: Chapter 194: Mistaking the Wrong Husband
After that day, Shen Zhiyi never saw the young male supporting actor in the cast again. He was exposed for having a history of harassing female classmates, and his role was taken over by the director’s nephew, ending his acting career just as it had begun.
After hearing all this gossip from Xiaodong, she hung up the phone and went upstairs to help Pei Yu pack his luggage. He was going overseas, and the round trip would take nearly a week. This was the first time they had been apart for so long since getting married.
Shen Zhiyi didn’t feel much about it. She was used to traveling around frequently herself, but Pei Yu had been more silent than usual since the day he confirmed his itinerary, seemingly in low spirits.
However, because Shen Zhiyi was filming, the couple only got to see each other in the evenings, and their time together was not long. She didn’t pay much attention, as Pei Yu’s mood was always poor whenever they were apart.
It was the day Pei Yu was leaving. She had been filming night scenes and only finished work at dawn. She went back to the hotel and slept without being able to see him off, managing only to make a few minutes’ call.
Ironically, from the day after he left, the progress of Shen Zhiyi’s filming slowed down, allowing more relaxation, and she had more time to spend in Huating.
As usual, she talked to Pei Yu on the phone every night. It was still early, so she watched a horror movie with the butler. Watching it was a mistake—she was awakened by a nightmare in the middle of the night, covered in cold sweat.
Almost subconsciously, Shen Zhiyi touched the spot beside her—empty. Her heart rate had not yet slowed down. Thinking that Pei Yu wasn’t by her side, her mood suddenly worsened.
She couldn’t sleep anymore and walked out of the bedroom to call Pei Yu.
The call was answered by Secretary Qin, as Pei Yu was in a meeting.
"Do you need me to give the phone to Chairman Pei now?"
"No need," Shen Zhiyi realized her call wasn’t timely. She frowned at the pitch-black night outside the ground-to-ceiling window, "I don’t have anything major."
She recalled her chaotic dream, not remembering specifics—just a mess, as if there were scenes involving a cruise ship disaster, and Pei Yu was on that cruise ship.
Thus, she suddenly asked, "Will Pei Yu be going out to sea in the next few days?"
Secretary Qin didn’t understand why she suddenly asked this, "No."
"Hmm," Shen Zhiyi’s voice was low, which sounded a bit mysterious to others, "That’s good."
She didn’t know why she dreamt of such ominous things; lately, she had been quite unlucky with small accidents, causing her unease.
After daylight, she mentioned the nightmare to the butler without going into specifics.
"It’s probably from being scared by that horror movie," the butler observed her low spirits, "Lately, it does seem like a stroke of bad luck. Shall someone fetch a few peace charms?"
It was somewhat of a psychological comfort.
Shen Zhiyi smiled, "Never mind, I might just be overthinking things recently."
It hadn’t been like this a few days earlier; from the time Pei Yu left, she had been restless, often waking up at night for no reason, unhappy at being alone in such a large room.
But she had lived like this for the first twenty-plus years of her life, so it didn’t make sense that she had developed a need for someone else’s company in just one year. Shen Zhiyi felt the problem wasn’t there; it might be because her regular schedule was disrupted by filming night scenes.
In the evening, there was a birthday celebration for an actor in the crew, and a group went to a nearby restaurant. Shen Zhiyi was chatting with Xiaodong as they walked in, when she suddenly caught a glimpse of a remarkably familiar figure by the elevator. Her breath caught, and without thinking, she ran towards the man.
Just as she approached, the man turned around, revealing an unfamiliar face.
Shen Zhiyi stopped dead in her tracks.
It wasn’t Pei Yu, just someone whose build resembled his. She had mistaken someone else for him.
"Sister Zhiyi?" Xiaodong caught up to her, asking in a puzzled tone, "What’s wrong?"
Shen Zhiyi sighed lightly, "I might not have rested well recently, I feel like my brain just can’t keep up."
The person didn’t look anything like Pei Yu. How had she mistaken that person for Pei Yu? Not to mention, Pei Yu was on the other side of the ocean, and no matter how quickly he traveled, he couldn’t possibly have come back at this time.
"Is that so?" Xiaodong sounded rather lost. The filming these past few days had been very relaxed, with plenty of time to rest. If she hadn’t rested well, it likely wasn’t due to the filming.
Shen Zhiyi didn’t say much more and followed him into the restaurant’s private dining room.
Actually, many people had noticed Shen Zhiyi’s unusual behavior, and of course the person who understood it best was the butler. She had gotten up several times during the night, occasionally running into the insomniac Shen Zhiyi, which she found strange and worrying.
These matters had naturally also become known to Pei Yu. He spoke to Shen Zhiyi every day and couldn’t see anything amiss with her. On the contrary, she seemed in quite a good mood during their chats and often laughed.
The film crew had been peaceful, with nothing to upset her. Pei Yu couldn’t figure out the root of her insomnia, and it constantly weighed on his mind, prompting him to move up his schedule to return to the country.
He would often compress his itinerary to finish his tasks earlier, each time returning earlier than planned, but also more tired. Shen Zhiyi strongly disapproved of this practice, and therefore, this time Pei Yu didn’t tell her to avoid upsetting her.
Sitting in the smoothly driving car, Pei Yu glanced at the nighttime scenery outside the window, a faint weariness in his eyes.
The car was headed towards Huating. At this time, Shen Zhiyi was still at a birthday party for the film crew actors, and she would return to Huating later than him that evening.
Suddenly, Pei Yu spoke, "Don’t go to Huating just yet."
Secretary Qin, understanding immediately, re-entered a new address in the navigation system.
The restaurant.
Shen Zhiyi had a light appetite, only eating some vegetables before putting down her chopsticks, but she did uncharacteristically drink a few more glasses of wine.
She had no scenes in the morning, and drinking some wine might help her sleep.
Thinking this, she stopped drinking when she felt slightly tipsy and sat quietly at her seat waiting for the party to break up.
Xiaodong glanced at her a few times, only to see her looking down, her thoughts unclear, and her face lightly flushed from the alcohol.
"Sister Zhiyi," when the party was nearly over, Xiaodong came to find her, "It’s almost over, should I take you home now?"
"Stay a while longer," she replied.
Shen Zhiyi’s response was unexpected. She stacked two cups together, her tone low and somewhat forlorn, "No one’s waiting for me anyway."
Rather than going back to that quiet and empty home, she preferred to stay in this lively place a bit longer.
Only when everyone had finally left, and the surrounding people had gradually departed, did Shen Zhiyi stand up. Though she was just slightly tipsy and could walk normally, her steps were slow.
Standing quietly in the brightly lit lobby, Shen Zhiyi found a corner to wait in while Xiaodong went back to the private room to fetch the bag he’d left behind.
Feeling slightly sleepy under the influence of the alcohol, she rubbed her eyes. As she lowered her hand, she saw a person walking through the revolving door of the lobby.
The figure and profile were very familiar, but with previous mistakes in her mind, Shen Zhiyi only thought she had encountered someone similar to Pei Yu again. Languidly, she turned her head away, unwilling to look any longer.
