Chapter 187: Chapter 187 Ways to Stay Up Late on New Year’s Eve.
That evening on New Year’s Eve, after having dinner with the butler, Shen Zhiyi received a call from Duan Jiaze.
"Auntie~" Xiaoshi called sweetly, his tone especially soft, "Happy New Year!"
Shen Zhiyi had already sent Xiaoshi a red envelope in the morning and had also sent him a New Year’s gift.
"Happy New Year," Shen Zhiyi said, holding the phone with the camera only showing herself.
"Auntie," Duan Jiaze assumed Pei Yu was not around and complained to her, "I originally wanted to come back to the country for the New Year, but Uncle wouldn’t allow it, thinking I’m annoying. Otherwise, I’d be with you right now."
His family had settled abroad for many years and actually rarely returned, but this year was different. Duan Jiaze had been mentioning wanting to return to the country to find Shen Zhiyi early on, so his mother brought it up to Pei Yu, and as one might expect, Pei Yu didn’t even hesitate to reject the idea immediately.
He must be crazy to think of arranging a troublemaker for his own and Shen Zhiyi’s time alone.
Shen Zhiyi was unaware of this matter as Pei Yu hadn’t mentioned it to her, and she naturally assumed that Xiaoshi would be spending New Year’s with his parents.
"It’s okay," she comforted Xiaoshi, "you’ll be back in a few days."
In a few more days, it would be their wedding, and Duan Jiaze was sure to return to the country for it.
"Then Auntie," Duan Jiaze pressed his face against the camera, innocently asking, "Can I sleep with you after I return to the country? Just like before."
As soon as he said this, the person who had been quietly acting as a backdrop outside of the camera laughed coldly.
Xiaoshi immediately paused, a hint of suspicion in his eyes, "I think I heard Uncle’s voice."
Shen Zhiyi, holding back a smile, angled the camera, "Your uncle is right here."
"Uncle!" Duan Jiaze flailed, "Why are you eavesdropping on my call with Auntie!"
It was so annoying. Every time he called Auntie, Pei Yu was there, and Duan Jiaze had no privacy at all.
"Eavesdropping?" Pei Yu dismissed his accusation with disdain, "I only see a sneaky tattle-tale."
Duan Jiaze stomped his foot, "Uncle, you’re a meanie! Meanie!"
"Alright, alright," Shen Zhiyi, seeing him get so angry that his little face turned red, quickly made peace, "He’s just joking, don’t take it personally with your uncle."
Her words were exactly what Xiaoshi wanted to hear; feeling like an adult, he calmed down and puffed out his chest, "Yeah, I won’t take it personally. I’m very understanding."
He might have calmed down, but Pei Yu was still not pleased.
"No understanding child would intrude on someone else’s newlywed life."
Duan Jiaze immediately defended himself, "I’m not trying to intrude, I just want to join you."
He said innocently, "Can’t I, such a cute and understanding child, join you? I’ll only take up a little bit of Auntie’s time."
Pei Yu had only one response to this, "Does your mother know about these words?"
Duan Jiaze: "..."
She knew, and he had already been scolded for it.
In the end, Duan Jiaze’s wish remained unfulfilled, and he hung up the phone, feeling dejected.
On New Year’s Eve, it was traditional to stay up late, and Shen Zhiyi was already feeling sleepy, but thinking that this was her first New Year with Pei Yu, she didn’t want to lightly break the custom.
"Sleepy?" Pei Yu caressed the corner of her eye with his fingertip, catching a little of the moisture that had appeared because she was sleepy.
"A little," Shen Zhiyi checked the time, "There are still three hours until midnight."
Some are still waiting.
Actually, feeling sleepy was because there was nothing to do; boredom naturally led to drowsiness.
"Then find something to do," Pei Yu suggested, seemingly with a reasonable proposal.
The room was warm and cozy, with all the main lights turned off for the movie, leaving only a dim nightlight. Shen Zhiyi had just wondered what to do when she felt a hand slip around her waist.
The hand caressed her waist a few times before skillfully slipping into her pajamas and traveling upwards.
Pei Yu’s kisses followed, accompanied by a faint chuckle, "It’s dark now, you can do whatever you want."
As he kneaded her with just the right amount of force, Shen Zhiyi felt an all-encompassing warmth and muttered softly, "But today is New Year’s Eve."
"Mhm," Pei Yu kissed the side of her neck, leaving a shallow mark, "That’s all the more reason not to waste it."
The couch didn’t allow for much movement, so Shen Zhiyi leaned against the soft carpet on her back, with the flickering light of the movie screen before her, her clothes slowly being stripped away, her body involuntarily shuddering slightly.
Pei Yu’s arm was wrapped around her waist, he asked softly, "Cold?"
The room temperature was quite comfortable, and Shen Zhiyi was wearing only a thin layer of pajamas. She shook her head and said she wasn’t cold, but Pei Yu still picked her up, having her sit in his lap, leaning against his warm chest.
"Say if you’re cold."
He was worried she might catch a chill because of it.
Shen Zhiyi didn’t feel cold; on the contrary, she felt hotter and hotter, a fine layer of sweat forming on her body, and so did Pei Yu. Her hand rested on his shoulder, some areas slick and slippery, unable to get a good grip, she fumbled clumsily a couple of times.
"Hiss," Pei Yu drew in a breath as his back was accidentally scratched by her fingernail. He paused momentarily, then quickly became heavier and more urgent with his movements, asking in a low voice close to her ear, "Does it hurt? Why are you grabbing me like that?"
Shen Zhiyi was breathless when she talked. She closed her eyes, covered his lips with her hand, only for Pei Yu to catch it and nibble a few times.
They played around until very late; she was tired and sleepy but couldn’t fall completely asleep because of Pei Yu’s actions. Resting against his shoulder, she still managed to ask about the time.
"What time is it?"
Pei Yu told her the time, but Shen Zhiyi listened without remembering; she was too tired to focus.
Feeling slightly damp and fearing a chill, Pei Yu wrapped her in a blanket comfortably and then carried her to the bathroom to clean up.
In the end, he made Shen Zhiyi break into a sweat again in the bathroom.
When Shen Zhiyi came to, it was while Pei Yu was holding her and giving her a drink. She tasted something off, pushed the cup away slightly, and mumbled unclearly, "It’s not water..."
"It’s a cold remedy," Pei Yu coaxed her to finish drinking. She had just sweated; even indoors, she couldn’t avoid a little draft. Fearing she might catch a cold, he wanted her to drink some of the remedy as a precaution.
The taste of the cold remedy was still tolerable. After finishing it, Shen Zhiyi rinsed her mouth and didn’t think at all about staying up for New Year’s; she just wanted to fall asleep instantly.
As she snuggled into the covers, about to drift off, Pei Yu kissed her forehead and whispered in his affectionate voice.
"It’s past midnight."
They had managed to stay up successfully.
Shen Zhiyi, with her eyes closed, curved her lips into a smile, snuggling closer to him, "Let’s hope for a safe and peaceful year for our Pei Yu."
The memory she could still recall about staying up on New Year’s Eve dated long back to her childhood when her mother was still around. On New Year’s Eve, her mom would tell her many fairy tales to keep her from falling asleep, and at the hard-won strike of midnight, she would say the same to her.
"Let’s hope for a safe and peaceful year for our Zhizhi."
That was Pei Yu’s voice, as if blending with the faded whisper from her memories.
