Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Want to Act with You.

After more than an hour, Shen Zhiyi, with the script in her arms, slowly shuffled to the study. She peeked around the doorway, looking in.

Pei Yu was still working, his prominent nose adorned with a pair of rimless glasses that gave him an air of indifferent, scholarly decadence. Without looking up, he instantly sensed her presence.

He looked up and asked, "What is it?"

Shen Zhiyi didn’t directly answer but asked instead, "Are you busy?"

"It seems you need something from me," Pei Yu chuckled lightly, shutting his computer, "I’m not busy now. What does Miss Shen need me to do?"

Shen Zhiyi’s eyes curved as she walked over with the script, "I’d like you to help me rehearse my lines. There’s a lot of dialogue for the role I’m auditioning for, and it’s a bit difficult to get into character alone."

She had initially wanted to rehearse with the butler, but he got a headache just looking at the lengthy script and refused repeatedly.

In the large house, there was no one else to help her rehearse, so she had no choice but to "bother" Pei Yu.

"Let me see," he said.

Pei Yu took the script from her hands. The sections marked for the audition were highlighted by her pen—it consisted of three parts, all opposite different characters, requiring the display of vastly differing emotions, demonstrating the complexity of the role she was set to play.

"Any of these three parts is fine," Shen Zhiyi said, giving him the choice while exhibiting an attitude that clearly showed she was asking for a favor.

After scanning the marked sections, Pei Yu made his choice, "The third part."

Having memorized the audition material, Shen Zhiyi immediately recalled the dialogue for that part when he mentioned the third section and nodded, "Okay."

The third part depicted a character caught in a struggle of emotions, torn between the anguish of a failed and painful marriage and the irresistible advances of a new love, vacillating between emotions and reason.

"I can’t be with you," Shen Zhiyi had given this a lot of thought, her emotional control was quite skilled, and she maintained an air of forced composure. "I still have a family."

The character was quite complex, not easily defined by notions of good or bad. After playing too many simplistic roles, Shen Zhiyi was eager to challenge herself.

"I know you have a family," Pei Yu, after only a few quick glances, had memorized his lines, spoke evenly, with a calm demeanor, "Does he treat you as well as I do?"

Shen Zhiyi’s eyes dimmed, her stance still resolute, "That doesn’t matter. Our marriage is entangled with too many interests. He and I are bound together for life."

"Then you can’t deny I am better," Pei Yu suddenly pulled her close, his fingertips caressing her lips. "I’m not asking you to leave him. You can maintain the facade of a happy marriage while enjoying the goodness I offer you."

Shen Zhiyi glared at him, irked by his impromptu alteration of the lines. The character he was now playing was obviously an ambitious young man with an eye on social climbing who, in this scene, was pressuring her character for marriage, trying to persuade the female lead to choose him by all means.

As if oblivious to the reproach in her gaze, Pei Yu kept tracing her lips, leaning closer with a murmuring voice like that of a lover whispering, "I can be your secret lover."

"Pei Yu!" Shen Zhiyi was completely thrown out of character by his blathering, "You can’t just change the lines whenever you feel like it."

"It’s the script that doesn’t make sense," Pei Yu, unfazed and bold, repeated those lines flatly, "This talk of ’if you don’t get a divorce, then we shouldn’t see each other anymore’. If you really can’t let go, what’s wrong with being lovers?"

Shen Zhiyi was at a loss for words for a moment, "How... How can you say that?"

"Because that’s exactly what I think," Pei Yu pulled her into his embrace.

"What are you saying," Shen Zhiyi realized he was serious, feeling somewhat incredulous but also curious. She couldn’t help asking, "If I stay with Huo Heng while seeing you on the side, you’d be okay with that?"

He was such a proud man.

"Mmm," Pei Yu replied calmly, as if he didn’t think there was anything to it, "He wouldn’t agree at first, but he wouldn’t hesitate for too long."

A secret lover or one shrouded in shadows, he probably couldn’t care less.

Shen Zhiyi looked at him with a non-joking expression, feeling a bit heavy in her chest, with a sour and swelling sensation. She hugged Pei Yu’s shoulders in silence, not speaking for a moment.

Pei Yu held her tight, thought for a while, and said, "But you wouldn’t do that."

Given Shen Zhiyi’s personality, such a situation wouldn’t occur; even if he wanted to be her lover, he wouldn’t have the chance.

"That’s not necessarily true," Shen Zhiyi, who had pondered the script for a long time and had been influenced somewhat by the role, put herself in that situation, imagining a scenario, "If I had met you after getting married, just like the character I am auditioning for, who meets the person who truly stirs her emotions after marriage, facing the crossroads of feelings and reality, I might not make a different choice than she does."

In the play, the second female lead would rather be disgraced than divorced.

Pei Yu lowered his gaze, quietly looking at her for a moment, as if trying to see if she was telling the truth, a hint of a smile on his lips, "Really?"

"Mmm-hmm," Shen Zhiyi said, wanting to soothe him, happily speaking sweet nothings, "Mr. Pei is very charming."

"I don’t believe it," Pei Yu narrowed his eyes, his fingertips gliding through her silky hair, "You would only hide from me."

"I certainly would hide," Shen Zhiyi admitted that, "but I can’t hide from you either."

As long as Pei Yu wanted, he always created various opportunities for them to meet. Now that Shen Zhiyi loved him, she felt that even if they met in another way, even if she really met him after marriage, she would probably still be unable to resist him.

Pei Yu had a soft expression, his words carrying a slight laugh, "So confident in me?"

"Because I love you," Shen Zhiyi answered.

She loved him, and in another way, she would still fall for him.

Pei Yu was silent for a good while, just twirling strands of her hair around his fingertips, his eyes deep and pondering, unknowing what he was thinking.

"Why aren’t you saying anything?" Shen Zhiyi wasn’t quite satisfied with his reaction; she rarely expressed her love without his asking for it, and yet she didn’t get a response, feeling a bit disappointed.

Had it been so long that he was already tired of it?

"Waiting for the time to be up," Pei Yu glanced at the phone screen, taking off his glasses, "It’s time."

He suddenly smiled, lifted Shen Zhiyi up, and walked toward the bedroom, "Your two hours are up, the rest of your time now belongs to me."

Shen Zhiyi just remembered this, but it was too late. She was placed on the soft bed, her skirt lifted to her waist, and as he touched her, a tingling sensation quickly spread deep within her body.

She gasped a few times, "Were you thinking about this all along?"

She didn’t even realize it.

"No," Pei Yu denied, taking her lips in his, his words blurred, "It was you who said you loved me first."

He had to respond in kind, physically.
