Chapter 147 I Love You.
Chapter 147: Chapter 147 I Love You.
After being brought back to Huating by Pei Yu in a drunken state, Shen Zhiyi no longer cared which place she should return to. During busier times, for convenience, she would return to her own house, and during less busy times, she would go back to Huating, whereas Pei Yu wasn’t so particular. He would basically go wherever Shen Zhiyi was.
But there were times when it was inconvenient for him to follow.
"Why do you have to be gone for so long?" Pei Yu said unhappily.
"Is one week considered long?" Shen Zhiyi replied as she came to the wardrobe to change her clothes, only to find him following her, guarding the doorway step by step, strongly expressing his dissatisfaction with her upcoming participation in a slow-paced rural variety show.
"It is," Pei Yu asked expressionlessly, "do you have to go?"
"Of course," Shen Zhiyi said with a laugh, "the contract is already signed. This is my work. When you go on business trips, I don’t stop you from going either."
"You could stop me," Pei Yu hugged her from behind, "but you never have. Do you not even miss me if we’re apart for a year?"
"Hey," Shen Zhiyi felt helpless, "that’s slander."
"I’m only going for a week, not a year," Shen Zhiyi, being held by him, couldn’t change clothes. She simply put the clothes down and turned around to face him, "I’ll be back soon, and besides, we can call each other often."
Pei Yu was silent, his eyes and eyebrows slightly drooping as he looked at a light-colored mole on her shoulder. After a while, he let out a low sigh and hugged her tighter, "A whole week."
No matter what, she would be gone for a week.
Seeing him like this, Shen Zhiyi started to waver, but backing out of a contract at the last minute was not her style. Moreover, the location for this variety show was very special—it was the hometown she had not returned to for many years, and she did want to go back for a visit.
"We’ll call each other every day," Shen Zhiyi promised, "okay?"
Pei Yu looked at her for a while and upped the ante, "And every time, you have to say you love me."
Shen Zhiyi: "..."
She was someone who was somewhat reserved in matters of affection, rarely expressing her emotions directly. Phrases like these made her uncomfortable just listening to them, yet ironically, Pei Yu was someone who lacked sufficient security.
Seeing her hesitate, Pei Yu let go of her, saying emotionlessly, "If you don’t agree, then forget it."
He picked up the clothes Shen Zhiyi had carelessly put down, his tone low, "I know you don’t love me that much—"
"I’ll say it, I’ll say it," Shen Zhiyi quickly interjected, cutting him off. If she didn’t agree, this man’s resentment would almost become tangible.
Having achieved his goal, Pei Yu lifted his gaze and smiled faintly, leaning down to kiss the corner of her lips, "Mm."
So the next day, Shen Zhiyi set off with her luggage.
The flight was booked by Secretary Qin, who also booked a first-class ticket for Xiaodong. She excitedly took photos and did not forget to exclaim, "Brother-in-law is indeed much more generous than our company."
Shen Zhiyi smiled lightly, already accustomed to her calling him brother-in-law.
"Sis," Xiaodong settled down for a moment before piping up again, "I heard the place where the variety show is being filmed is your hometown?"
Shen Zhiyi was somewhat lost in thought, "Mm."
To fit with the tone of the show, the production team had chosen picturesque rural areas for filming. Actually, her hometown was a bit remote, but fortunately, someone had invested in the infrastructure over the years, even building a resort area. With gradually improved facilities, it attracted the attention of the show’s producers.
"The name sounds somewhat familiar," Xiaodong, who had only been acquainted with Shen Zhiyi for a few months, didn’t know much about her. It wasn’t until they got off the plane and drove into the small town, seeing the stone monument with the town’s name, that he suddenly remembered why it felt familiar.
A few months ago, Shen Zhiyi’s account had been used for a donation campaign, where she gave several hundred thousand to various organizations in batches, one of which was a mountain village school that seemed to be in this town.
The recording site for the variety show was in the rural countryside, and it was said that they had rented land from a nearby farmer. The wooden cabin had been funded and built by the production crew a few months earlier.
The environment was much better than Shen Zhiyi had expected. The other guests were all high EQ individuals from the industry who were skilled in social interactions and unlikely to clash, so even though they were meeting for the first time, the atmosphere was quite harmonious.
Since it was her first day here and she was unfamiliar with the place, the guests spent a lot of time introducing themselves to each other. It was only after being reminded by the production crew that they began to tidy up and get to know their surroundings. With so much to do, they were inevitably a little frantic. By the time Shen Zhiyi remembered to call Pei Yu, it was already ten at night. The female artiste sharing her room was in the bathroom washing up, so she took the opportunity to make the phone call.
The person on the other end picked up quickly, obviously having been waiting. Shen Zhiyi glanced at the camera, hesitated for a moment, but decided not to deliberately avoid it.
"I just finished being busy," Shen Zhiyi asked, "Have you been waiting long?"
"It’s okay," Pei Yu was still at the company. Without Shen Zhiyi, there was no need for him to bring work home, so he kept busy while waiting, hardly noticing the time passing by.
The two of them chatted on and off for a while. Shen Zhiyi packed her luggage again in the meantime. When she heard the water in the bathroom stop, she guessed that her roommate would be coming out soon.
"...Should I hang up?"
Pei Yu paused for a moment, then said slowly, "Have you forgotten something?"
In truth, she hadn’t forgotten; it was just that Shen Zhiyi felt embarrassed to bring it up first and had a bit of wishful thinking, hoping perhaps he had forgotten.
But as it turned out, he had a good memory.
She decided to turn her back to the camera, hesitated for a few seconds, and lowered her voice, "...I love you."
It was the first time Shen Zhiyi said such a confession, and her face turned red. To avoid letting Pei Yu make jokes or push for more, she hurriedly hung up the phone.
The next second, her roommate came out of the bathroom and asked her directly, "Why is your face so red? Is it hot?"
It was nearly winter now; it definitely wasn’t hot, so Shen Zhiyi’s flushed face was puzzling.
"No," Shen Zhiyi couldn’t explain and grabbed some clothes before ducking into the bathroom, "I’m going to wash up."
By the end of her preparations, it was almost midnight when she was ready to go to bed. Her roommate in the other bed had already fallen asleep. Shen Zhiyi tried to make as little noise as possible as she carefully turned off the light and got into bed.
Before going to sleep, she checked her phone messages and saw that Pei Yu had sent her a voice message while she was washing up, which she hadn’t noticed at the time.
The earphones were in her bag on the desk. Shen Zhiyi initially wanted to use voice-to-text to check the content but hesitated and then decided to get out of bed and retrieve the earphones instead.
Once back in bed, she put on the earphones and played the message.
It was a very familiar voice and tone, languid and deep, and the content was just as familiar.
"I love you."
Unlike the rush and discomfort she felt when saying those three words, Pei Yu spoke in a relaxed tone, as if he had said them countless times before.
She listened to the short 3-second message dozens of times.
