Chapter 81: Chapter 81 Arrogance

For a master skilled in both alchemy and engineering, designing and manufacturing a robot is not a challenging task.

In fact, Perfikot only utilized her engineering knowledge to complete the structural design of the port loading and unloading robot, and along the way, finished planning the port as well.

"To turn this island into a hub for material distribution, we need to construct a berth in the fjord that can accommodate at least three large vessels each a hundred meters long, and equip the docks with material handling robots. Relying on human labor for loading and unloading would be far too inefficient." In the study of the manor, Perfikot introduced her plans to the others: "Additionally, we need to build a series of large warehouses for material storage and stacking, though open-air stacks are acceptable as well.

Furthermore, considering the issue of material transshipment, we might need a small railway to reduce the difficulty of material transfers.

So, to sum up, there’s quite a lot of engineering work on this island. Considering the land area these facilities will require, I’ve decided to demolish this plantation, remove these fruit trees to expand the docks and warehouses."

No one opposed Perfikot’s plan. On one hand, they lacked knowledge and experience in this area; on the other, they had no confidence to refute Perfikot.

Due to past events, she was equated with cruelty in their minds, which somehow affected them when facing her.

In simpler terms, these people were intimidated by Perfikot’s fearsome deeds and needed a round of willpower assessment.

Of course, those like the old butler or Samantha, who were knights, did not show fear in front of Perfikot.

So after Perfikot finished outlining her plan, the old butler spoke up: "Miss, although you might not care, I must remind you that this plantation is the livelihood for the island’s indigenous people. If you demolish the plantation and remove the fruit trees, it would greatly affect their lives."

"We can hire them as construction workers; building the docks requires manpower, so they won’t go hungry." Faced with the butler’s reminder, Perfikot appeared somewhat domineering but still provided a solution.

Both she and the butler understood that for these indigenous people, the impact would be temporary, just about three years.

Three years later, when the apocalypse arrives, if these local indigenous people have no shelter, they would only freeze to death directly, likely not even surviving until three years later.

As for the fruit trees here? No plant can blossom and bear fruit in the extreme cold of minus 40 degrees Celsius; it’s fortunate if they don’t freeze to death.

So, in Perfikot’s view, it’s only three years, they can endure it.

But for those who did not know the truth of the apocalypse, Perfikot’s actions seemed somewhat overbearing.

"Lady Perfikot, may I ask if you could allow these indigenous people to return to their original way of life?" Dr. Jones began; these days’ investigations gave him some understanding of the island’s indigenous people, so from a scholar’s mindset, he expressed his opinion: "These indigenous people have lived on this island for ages, they have their own culture and way of life.

The previous plantation owner’s enslavement ruined their tranquil life. Now that you have mercifully saved them, granting them freedom again, why not be even more generous and allow them to return to their past life?"

From Dr. Jones’s perspective, these indigenous people always had their culture and way of life, which is a very precious research subject.

So, as a scholar, he certainly hoped to preserve these extremely valuable research samples rather than returning with a dry written record of a vanished civilization.

However, Perfikot, after taking a deep look at him, said, "Arrogance."

This word left everyone puzzled, as any evaluation Perfikot made wouldn’t be surprising, except this one was baffling.

"These indigenous people have been enslaved for over twenty years, their lifestyle long since altered. Do you think by hanging the plantation owner who enslaved them, they can return to their past, indifferent to the world?" Perfikot sharply pointed out a truth Dr. Jones was reluctant to face and slightly disdainfully criticized: "Their lives have long been influenced by the outside world, their lifestyle already changed. Losing the plantation owner only frees them from oppression, not returns them to a past, isolated survival environment.

They could have led prosperous and modern lives, yet you want them to maintain their primitive past lifestyle? Ultimately, it’s just because you want to preserve so-called unique indigenous culture here, isn’t that arrogance?"

At this, Perfikot tapped her planning scheme on the table, sarcastically mocking, "Both you and I, even that plantation owner I hanged, we are merely imposing our will on their lives.

And that is merely because we are the so-called ’civilized people’, we are stronger than they are, so we can impose our will upon them!

Admit it, it is just arrogance because we arrogantly believe that we can decide their fate, whether from goodwill or malice, you place yourself above them."

Perfikot’s words were too sharp, leaving Dr. Jones with a pale face, wanting to be angry but not knowing how.

After his lips moved, he finally voiced, "Then how about letting them choose for themselves? Since you say we arrogantly placed ourselves in a position to decide for them, why not respect their wishes?"

"Respect their wishes?" Perfikot listened to Dr. Jones and, after looking at everyone, seeing no objections, thought about it and said, "Fine, let’s respect your opinion, let them choose."

Upon hearing this, Dr. Jones had a faint smile, feeling that Perfikot wasn’t entirely unreasonable.

However, Perfikot suddenly added, "But I need to remind you, the decision to establish a logistics hub here is unchangeable. Even if they choose to return to their original life, dismantling the plantation to build the port and warehouses will not be altered."
