Chapter 80: Chapter 80: The Plan for Sweet Berry Island
After Perfikot hanged the plantation owner, the exploration team’s activities on the island received the full support of the indigenous people.
Of course, this had a lot to do with Perfikot declaring their freedom, and they were no longer slaves.
In short, with the help of the local people, the exploration team was able to survey the entire island and collect a large amount of data.
Dr. Jones also discovered murals and stone carvings left by the ancestors of the local people on the island, which proved that locals had been living on the island a long time ago, stimulating his great interest.
Through conversations with the locals and investigations into their lifestyle and culture, Dr. Jones gathered a wealth of valuable information, enough for him to write several research papers on the history of the indigenous peoples of the New Continent.
It was precisely because of this that Dr. Jones felt that his trip was not in vain after all.
In contrast, his heart, initially frightened by Perfikot’s massacre in New Shaker City, finally found some peace.
The smooth progress of exploration also helped restore the morale of the exploration team, and everyone finally stopped dwelling on the streets filled with corpses in New Shaker City.
However, at this moment, Perfikot didn’t care much about what the members of the exploration team wanted to write; she was instead considering how to utilize the island based on the survey results.
The survey by the exploration team revealed that the island had abundant geothermal resources beneath it, which would be incredibly valuable in the face of impending global freezing!
According to Perfikot’s plan, all that was needed was to build a large geothermal circulation pump to extract the underground hot water and provide heating for the island’s buildings.
This water can also be recycled; once cooled, it can be pumped back underground to be heated into hot water again!
In short, as long as the geothermal resources are not exhausted, this island possesses the perfect conditions to be the ideal site for a shelter in the future blizzard.
However, according to those astrologers’ prophecies, the whole planet will be thoroughly frozen within three hundred years, and even the planet’s core will be frozen, leaving no geothermal resources at that time.
Though, in Perfikot’s view, the idea of the core freezing within three hundred years is really exaggerated, as the energy contained in an entire planet is unimaginable for humans and wouldn’t be depleted even over billions of years.
Freezing the whole planet in just three hundred years, even freezing the core, is really too inconceivable.
In Perfikot’s view, either those astrologers made a mistake in their divination, or the source of the disaster is something she doesn’t understand.
The reason is simple; if the massive global climate change were caused by natural factors, the underground wouldn’t be affected.
Not to mention the core, even if the surface temperature goes down to minus 120°C, the layers five hundred meters deep are still warm.
Moreover, the average distance from the surface to the core exceeds six thousand kilometers, so digging a few thousand meters deep wouldn’t even count as scratching the surface for the planet itself.
Imagine how much energy is required to freeze such a massive object completely.
If these factors aren’t taken into account, it will also affect Perfikot’s subsequent plans.
Though they need to be considered, there isn’t a need to overthink, since the astrologers’ result indicates a three hundred-year margin.
While Perfikot had recently thought of using the Philosopher’s Stone to make a panacea for herself to achieve immortality, if the world will indeed perish in three hundred years, she’d rather choose to die peacefully to avoid suffering later.
As for stopping the cause of all this and saving the world, Perfikot is indeed not inclined towards such matters.
Now is not the time to think about these things anyway; surviving the global temperature drop first is the priority before considering how to save the world!
Driven by this thought, Perfikot adjusted her mindset and refocused on planning for the island.
"First, the port and dock need to be expanded; we can’t only dock one big ship at a time, it’s too inefficient," Perfikot started by expressing her dissatisfaction with the island’s dock in her plan.
The original plantation owner was a pirate, so he valued the construction of the dock.
After all, he operated a plantation business, and the produce needed to be shipped out to earn money, and sea transport was the only way on the island.
Additionally, other materials needed to be sourced from outside the island, so Sweet Berry Island’s dock could berth large ships like the White Gem.
But because trade on the island was limited, the dock’s usage rate was low, hence only one berth was available.
Small boats can moor horizontally, allowing more to dock, unloading from the bow to shore, as small boats can easily turn.
But with large ships like the White Gem, they can only moor vertically, only one ship can dock, requiring a long gangway for embarking, disembarking, and unloading cargo.
If Perfikot wants to use Sweet Berry Island as a material distribution hub, the port must be expanded, and the supporting facilities must be improved too.
In Langton, facilities like gantry cranes for handling large cargos have appeared on the docks, but on Sweet Berry Island, the only tool for moving cargo is slaves.
For the plantation owner, the labor efficiency of the slaves was acceptable, but for Perfikot, it’s completely unacceptable!
She needs a hub capable of handling large volumes of materials, a port that can load and unload materials from multiple ships simultaneously, not just a simple mooring berth.
The low labor efficiency of the slaves is absolutely unacceptable for Perfikot.
Instead of using slaves, she’d rather use alchemy to create a port robot for handling cargo.
This idea started forming in Perfikot’s mind, considering she might experiment with some new ideas in building the shelter.
She still remembers playing an apocalyptic-themed game in her original world before crossing, where most production and service facilities could be replaced by robots.
To the extent that eventually, all factories could operate automatically, and city residents only needed to stay home, drink, and box.
"Maybe I could give it a try? Anyway, making robots doesn’t seem difficult for me," Perfikot estimated the challenges of creating a large robot and found it seemingly not tough, deciding to give it a shot.
