Chapter 74: The Governor Who Left a Way Out

Chapter 74: Chapter 74: The Governor Who Left a Way Out

Having left the White Gem, the Governor passed through the barricades set up by Perfikot’s guards and boarded his carriage to leave this blood-soaked dock.

It must be said that in just two days, more than two hundred people were killed here, and the stench of blood was so overwhelming that it exceeded the limits of what a normal person could endure.

Not to mention a cultivated civil servant like the Governor, even the Knights and guards around Perfikot couldn’t bear it — at least, when the Governor was leaving, he saw some guards vomiting in hidden corners.

Thinking of this, he almost gagged but managed to suppress this ungraceful action, urging the driver to move quickly.

The driver also evidently did not want to linger in such a hellish place, so he swiftly drove the carriage away from the dock and turned onto another street.

As he looked out the carriage window at the once thriving and bustling city, now left desolate, the Governor’s face became exceedingly grim.

In the carriage, the Governor’s secretary looked at the Governor with a worried expression, seemingly concerned as to whether the Governor’s mission was accomplished.

He accompanied the Governor but was not allowed entry by the guarding Knights, so he waited in the carriage the entire time.

"The Dame declined, go back and inform all departments that they must fully cooperate with Her Ladyship’s purging actions to completely clear out the Independent Faction in New Shaker City." The Governor, sensing the secretary’s gaze, directly issued a new order: "Additionally, send a telegram from the Governor’s telegraph office to the homeland to report Her Ladyship’s assassination attempt and massacre in New Shaker City.

Report honestly without embellishment and see what the reaction from the homeland is."

"Yes, Governor." The secretary nodded in agreement, being a close confidant personally appointed by the Governor and entrusted with such matters.

However, while agreeing, the secretary also said with worry on his face: "Governor, if Her Ladyship continues like this, she will ruin the entire New Shaker City! Just the market loss from the two days of martial law has almost reached ten thousand pounds, if this isn’t resolved soon..."

"Enough, shut up!" The Governor snapped irritably but then explained with some resentment: "She is the Empress’s plenipotentiary envoy! An Imperial hereditary Baron who inherited the title at the age of fourteen!

I’m merely a colonial Governor, regardless of my status or position, I have no right to stop her from doing what she wants!

Unless there are orders from the homeland, with Brandelis’ status and power, she can kill anyone she wants to kill!"

Even without the letter from the Eldest Princess, the Governor had no ability to oppose Perfikot.

Although being a colonial Governor sounds like a high and powerful title, and indeed he held the military and political power of the entire New Continent colony, compared to an Imperial hereditary Baron and Royal plenipotentiary envoy, it was insignificant.

The colonial Governor holds vast power in the colony, but it all hinges on the support from the homeland.

If the homeland offers unreserved support, then the colonial Governor can naturally enforce his will across every corner of the colony.

But without the homeland’s support, not to mention holding onto military and political power, he probably couldn’t even issue orders from the Governor’s Mansion.

Moreover, a colonial Governor, while important, isn’t indispensable to the Empire. After all, many in the Empire are qualified to serve as colonial Governors, and only the unlucky end up being assigned almost as if exiled to distantly faraway colonies.

Nevertheless, the position isn’t without benefits, at least for the Governor himself, as long as the term is completed without error, and the Empire’s interests in the colony are properly maintained, then upon returning to the homeland, a noble title is usually granted.

Though it’s merely an honorary noble title without land or hereditary privileges, it still symbolizes nobility.

Thus, Governors usually strive to secure benefits for the mother country, implementing the Empire’s will in every aspect of the colony.

The Governor of the New Continent did this before, but now, with the Eldest Princess’s letter, a different thought took root in his mind.

Subsequently, he spoke to his secretary: "When news comes from the homeland, if it orders us to stop Brandelis’ actions or to let her be, then do everything by the book, handle it officially.

But if the homeland fully supports Brandelis, then find a way to secretly contact the Independent Faction and quietly let some people go, and keep in touch with them, understand?"

"I understand, but why do we need to do this?" The secretary looked confused, grasping the first part of the directive but not understanding the latter part.

Hearing the secretary’s question, the Governor’s temper flared, and he bopped the secretary on the head, reprimanding angrily: "If you weren’t my nephew, I’d have bashed your head in for being so dumb!"

The secretary could only obediently endure the scolding, as the Governor was not only his superior but also his mother’s brother, having facilitated his appointment as the Governor’s secretary.

Otherwise, as a recent university graduate, he could never have landed such a lucrative job, even in the colonies, still regarded as part of the Empire’s civil service.

As long as he performed well, once the Governor’s term ended, he could return with him to the homeland and enter the true imperial power structure.

For this reason, he diligently learned and increasingly grasped the Governor’s intentions, gradually becoming the Governor’s trusted aide, though this time the Governor’s words left him baffled.

Seeing his nephew’s confused expression, the Governor patiently explained: "Brandelis is a plenipotentiary envoy in charge of the Empire’s Arctic Scientific Exploration Plan. Her current rampant massacre of the Independent Faction in New Shaker City oversteps her authority.

Either stopping or letting it pass could be reasonable because her position at such a young age implies deep trust by the Royal Family!

So, if the Empire supports her, it only reflects her level of favor, unrelated to us, requiring no stance on our part, just official handling!

But if the Empire fully supports her, it means what she’s doing is crucial to the Empire, and this concerns us! I must leave myself a way out!"

Ultimately, the Governor decided against disclosing the contents of the Eldest Princess’s letter to his nephew; he did not want such a significant secret to become widely known.
