Chapter 423 - 423 422 Uroboros
Chapter 423: Chapter 422 Uroboros Chapter 423: Chapter 422 Uroboros Leaving Heibo Snow Forest, Russell returned to the Knight Regiment, protecting it as they continued to campaign across the snowfield.
Of course.
His protection was mostly making occasional appearances while spending most of his time alone hunting the Snow Demon, venturing deep into the endless snowfield.
Harvesting Ice Essence Pearls while searching for Snow Giant Da.
Unfortunately.
The snowfield was too vast, and if Snow Giant Da wished to remain hidden, no one could find him. It was purely by luck that they gnawed off one of his little fingers the last time.
“Gah.”
Under the cover of night, within the Gloomy Dreamland, the Little Dream Dragon devoured an Ice Essence Pearl without hurrying to sleep and digest.
Ever since hoarding some star crystals, the Little Dream Dragon no longer needed to sleep to digest the Ice Essence Pearls.
But the problem was, the current Ice Essence Pearls could no longer satisfy the Little Dream Dragon’s appetite—it had set its sights on the rest of Snow Giant Da’s body.
“There’s nothing I can do, Ice Cream. It’s not that I won’t take you to find him, the key is we cannot find him,” Russell sighed. “Nor can we hear Snow Giant Da’s Lucky Whispers like we can hear the Ouroboros’s.”
“Gah!” The Little Dream Dragon was not listening, it was simply angry.
“Take it slowly, haste makes waste. Patience is the best quality for reaching the peak of dragonhood. You don’t want to have an unstable foundation like the Shadowflame Dragon, becoming a hollow dragon, do you?” Russell had to initiate another round of education.
He barely pacified the Little Dream Dragon’s impatient mood.
In late July, as supplies dwindled, the Knight Regiment’s snowfield campaign had to come to an end.
Russell did not return with the Knight Regiment but went to Heibo Snow Forest to start a new round of psychological warfare.
Just as Unicorn Polly had said, after a period of calm, the Ouroboros finally responded to Russell’s repeated nagging.
“Are you really the Master of Dreamscape?” A strange murmuring voice came with the Lucky Whisper.
Russell, delighted with the response, replied proudly, “Little snakey, you can hide in dreams, obviously you can also keenly feel the rich dreamscape aura on me… Come on, let’s be honest with each other, then you can understand everything!”
Unfortunately, until the Ouroboros was contracted, the Little Dream Dragon could not pull it into Gloomy Dreamland. Otherwise, if he called out at night, the Ouroboros would obediently recognize its master.
“You are the Master of Dreamscape, but why should I recognize you as my master?” the Ouroboros replied through the Lucky Whisper.
“If you want to progress, if you want to become stronger than you are now, even as strong as me, then choose to recognize me as your master. Through the power of our contract, we can share and grow stronger together,” Russell said.
The Lucky Whisper fell silent.
Russell continued, “How about this, if meeting in reality is difficult for you, then we’ll meet in the Gloomy Dreamland.”
He then communicated with Polly and used the Ethereal Dream Escape Skill to directly enter the Gloomy Dreamland.
Of course.
The view was still the real world, as Wraithwalk and Ethereal Dream Escape were only on the surface of Gloomy Dreamland, not truly entering it.
Soon he heard the response of the Lucky Whisper, “Ah, human, Russell, how have you disappeared?”
“I told you, we meet in the Gloomy Dreamland,” Russell appeared and responded—during the Ethereal Dream Escape Skill, Russell could hear the sounds from the outside world, but the outside world could not hear his voice, it was one-way shielding.
After speaking, he quickly re-entered the Gloomy Dreamland.
Then he heard a meek Lucky Whisper, “I enter the dream, and I can’t see you, strange, strange, but you can see me.”
“Because your power is not strong enough,” Russell said with a smile. “So, little snakey, recognize me as your master. I will grant you stronger power. Then, you’ll be able to see me in the dream and even travel the world in dreams.”
When Russell successfully used the Ethereal Dream Escape Skill.
Like the last straw that broke the camel’s back, the Ouroboros could no longer restrain the pounding of its heart and quietly stuck its head out from the tree hole.
This was a silver-white serpent Phantom Beast, somewhat resembling Unicorn Polly in color.
Its head was about the size of an adult human’s fist, with a pair of black, sparkling eyes and a flickering forked tongue.
It was not particularly beautiful, but it had more texture than ordinary serpents.
Seeing the Ouroboros snake make an appearance, Russell squatted down and reached out his hand toward the tree hole, “Welcome, little snakey.”
The Ouroboros retracted its head slightly.
Lucky Whisper echoed simultaneously, “I don’t like being called Little Snake.”
“Then I’ll call you Ouroboros, since you like to bite your tail when you sleep, which, of course, is the scientific name,” Russell said, pulling this way and that to ease Ouroboros’s tension. “But you still need a personal name.”
Ouroboros poked its head out, gazing at Russell.
Russell held its gaze, “Let me give you a name.”
“I have a name, I am called Uroboros,” Lucky Whisper sounded, Ouroboros actually had its own name.
This was the first time Russell had seen a phantom beast name itself.
“Uroboros, does your name have any meaning?” Russell was curious, but Ouroboros did not respond.
However, it quickly made its way completely out of the tree hollow.
What emerged was a five-meter-long silver serpent with fine scales devoid of any impurities, its thickest part bulkier than an adult’s arm. With small eyes and a blunt head, it didn’t seem very menacing.
It even appeared quite harmless.
Russell paid special attention to its tail, but couldn’t find anything unusual.
Nor did it have any magic-powered characteristics like Unicorn Polly’s horn or Harpy Dragon Hape’s silly tuft, indicated by magical patterns in the glow of magic power from Gloomy Dreamland; it was just a regular tail.
“Let me touch your tail,” Russell requested.
Ouroboros made no objection, and soon, Russell was holding and gently shaking its tail.
This act of touching the tail meant that Uroboros was officially accepting Russell as its master.
“Uroboros, have you experienced flying?” Russell chuckled.
Ouroboros, cocking its head to one side, didn’t understand. After a few prompts from Russell, it carefully coiled around his waist and shoulders.
Russell leapt up, mounting Black Oil Dragon Ross.
“Roar!”
With a dragon roar, Ross took to the skies.
Wind howled against the face, and Uroboros clung tightly to Russell out of fear. Unfortunately, without eyelids to blink, the reptile could only stare into the wind.
“Scary scary… Scary scary… Scary scary…” Occasionally, Lucky Whisper would echo, repeating Ouroboros’s fears, but the frequency faded until they flew into the territory of Shadowflame Duchy, after which Lucky Whisper ceased altogether.
So much so that upon returning to Wuyao Snake Manor and settling Uroboros down, Lucky Whisper wasn’t heard again from start to finish.
“Perhaps, the duration of Lucky Whisper has expired,” Russell thought to himself.
The purpose of Lucky Whisper was to help Russell hear the private whispers of phantom beasts useful to his contracted ones.
Now that Uroboros had accepted a master, there was naturally no need for Lucky Whisper’s assistance.
“You’ll stay here for now, with endless food supply, but wait a bit for our phantom beast contract. Hape and I still need to complete the final step of our training,” Russell instructed a makeshift tree hollow to be dug as a home for Ouroboros.
This was next to Cigar Courtyard, right by the bamboo forest where Polly lived.
After Uroboros adapted to the environment near Cigar Courtyard, Russell began to inquire about and test the serpent’s magic abilities.
It didn’t have characteristics of a Pseudo-Dragon, so it might just be an ordinary phantom beast.
But it had two innate magical abilities, or rather, just one – the Earth Traveling Spell, which allows it to swiftly tunnel through soil and rock. Its other innate ability was more of an instinctual talent, akin to Wraithwalk.
However, unlike Polly’s Wraithwalk, once Uroboros entered Gloomy Dreamland, it couldn’t move its body.
Its talent was merely to hide itself within the Gloomy Dreamland.
“You’re much weaker than Polly,” Russell said with a hint of disappointment. The Earth Traveling Spell was clearly weaker than Polly’s Wind Walking Skill, and the talent that allowed hiding but not movement paled in comparison to Ethereal Dream Escape Skill. “You’re like a fully weakened version of her.”
Polly responded in mind, “But Ice Cream likes it, doesn’t she?”
“Yes, Ice Cream likes it,” Russell realized with relief.
He no longer needed to be picky about the strength of a phantom beast. If it could help Ice Cream, then it was the most suitable phantom beast.
Thinking it over, he said to Uroboros, “Your talent will be called Hidden Dream Trace in Gloomy Dreamland, Hidden Dream Trace!”
