Chapter 197 - 197 196 Fantasy Beast Whispers
Chapter 197: Chapter 196: Fantasy Beast Whispers Chapter 197: Chapter 196: Fantasy Beast Whispers Snowforests are not scarce on the snowfield, especially around the warmer regions, where many cold spring points and snowforests abound.
However, Russell had never carefully searched for snowforests or cold spring points within the Gloomy Dreamland before, being too busy hunting Snow Ghosts and devouring Snow Demons.
“Next time we pass by a snowforest, we must inspect it thoroughly. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we encounter another fairy?”
“Quack!”
“Fine, if we can’t find Fairy Saiban, we’ll search for Snow Ghosts. Just some extract fruits, not as tasty as Ice Soul Pearls or Ice Pellet Pearls. Right, Ice Cream?”
“Quack!”
“Take off, head south, accelerate!”
“Quack quack!”
Perhaps too much time was wasted in Fairy Saiban’s snowforest, or perhaps those five Snow Ghosts were just an anomaly, for the duo, along with their dragon, butterfly, and flower, searched the snowfield for a long time without spotting a single glow from a green-skinned creature.
“Quack!” Little Dream Dragon, upon departure, was very angry.
“Temper’s growing, eh Ice Cream? Don’t be angry, we’ll come back to the snowfield tomorrow for the search. I refuse to believe we can’t find any Snow Ghosts!”
Consciousness returned to chaos, and by the time he awoke, it was already dawn the next day.
“My lord, you’re awake.” His personal servant, Ram, was already feeding the warhorses, and Eric had gone outside to the Wolf Head Skylight, training on the snowfield with Kevin.
The four attendant Knights had also awoken, and Catherine was in the tent, beginning to comb her hair.
Only Charles was still lying in his sleeping bag, smacking his lips.
“Wake Charles up. I’m taking Red-eye out for a stroll,” Russell said as he dressed himself and hurriedly left the Wolf Head Skylight.
Soon after reaching the snowfield, he arrived at Saiban Snow Forest—he had named this snowforest after the fairy Saiban.
“Sir, what are you looking for?” Mr. Eric, who had been training with Kevin, followed him.
“Yesterday, when I wandered through this snowforest, I spotted a strange fir tree. I came to take a closer look.” It didn’t take long for Russell to find the fir tree that had radiated the Magic Light the night before, the thickest one in the entire snowforest.
Then he quietly circled the fir tree, examining it.
Eric, puzzled, reached out to touch the trunk, carefully sensing the breath within the bark, and murmured, “There’s no trace of magic. It’s just an ordinary tree.”
“Is that so.” Russell was noncommittal, “Eric, have you ever heard of fairies?”
Eric frowned in thought and replied, “No.”
“All right.” Russell wasn’t disappointed; he hadn’t felt any magical aura from the fir tree either.
Therefore, ordinary people couldn’t possibly discover a fairy, and naturally, they had no idea what a fairy was.
He planned to go back and look through some books to see if he could find any relevant information; these were books he had brought from Bluebird Castle. If not, he would search in Fluorescent Castle.
However, just then.
Lost in a trance, Russell suddenly heard a very strange whispering voice, unfamiliar yet familiar, indistinct yet clear.
“Fairy, I think I’ve seen one. Is it that leaf-like little bug? I was bitten by a Snow Ghost, and it didn’t help me. Next time I see it, I’m going to bite it! I hope it’s crispy like chicken, I love eating chicken.”
“Hmm?”
Russell froze.
He then quickly looked around; there was nothing unusual, only himself, Eric, and the two Fantasy Beasts, the Red-eyed Rat King and Kevin the Gold and Silver Wolfhound, no one else.
Seeing his reaction, Eric asked, “Sir, what’s wrong?”
“Did you just hear… someone speaking?” Russell asked, half-way through the question, he had begun to realize something.
Eric furrowed his brow, also glancing around, “No.”
“I must have misheard,” Russell waved his hand dismissively, his gaze then sweeping over the Red-eyed Rat King and Kevin the Gold and Silver Wolfhound.
The Red-eyed Rat King was busily searching for something to eat on the ground, while Kevin squatted nearby, watching him with an innocent gaze.
But Russell had understood that the bizarre whispers he had just heard must have come from Kevin.
That is, the so-called Fantasy Beast whisper.
“I didn’t expect to really hear the whispers of a Fantasy Beast!” Russell marveled inwardly, Fairy Saiban’s magical berries were indeed miraculous.
You see,
Only Knights could communicate directly with their contracted Fantasy Beasts through a mental connection. Other times, communicating with a Fantasy Beast involved much guesswork, and any slightly more complex meanings could not be conveyed.
But now Russell could listen to the whispers of a Fantasy Beast, which meant he could communicate with them more efficiently.
However, he did not reveal this.
Instead, he continued to wander around the fir tree, idly chatting with Eric and even muttering a few words to Kevin and the Red-eyed Rat King.
But strangely, he heard no more of those odd whispers.
Even when the Red-Eyed Rat King “squeaked” and Kevin “woofed,” clearly speaking, he still could not hear those peculiar murmurs.
“Is it intermittent?” Russell felt helpless.
Fairy Saiban was nowhere to be seen, no anomalies were found at the fir tree, and the ability to listen to the whispers of Fantasy Beasts, granted by the magical berries, was no longer present.
He had no choice but to head home for now.
After washing up, having breakfast, sparring a bit, and then taking a dose of Magic Elixir to open up branch meridians, Russell finally had some free time and started to meticulously search through information in his study.
Unfortunately,
He found no records related to Fairies, nor about the magical berries, not even any information in legends similar to Fairies, the Snow Forest, or those berries.
“Alas, in the end, it’s because the Shadowflame Grand Duchy is too remote, with vast territories and sparse population, and communication isn’t smooth. There must be people who have encountered Fairies and even received blessings from the Snow Forest, but there’s no one to spread or record these encounters.”
Even Amber Worms were rarely mentioned by people, let alone the rarer Fairies.
Suddenly,
Russell’s ears picked up the very strange whispers again; this time the sound was slightly different.
But the texture was the same as before, unfamiliar yet familiar, blurred yet clear.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten Bear Honeybee’s honey. I should sneak over to the Bear Honeybee Farm some time and steal a bit— hehehehehehe— Russell won’t discover it, hehehehehehe…”
“Uhh…”
Russell’s mouth twitched, “That’s definitely the Red-eyed Rat King whispering!”
He put down the book and went straight downstairs to call out, “Red-eyed, come here!”
Thump thump thump thump, the Red-eyed Rat King quickly climbed the stairs and came before Russell, looking at him with a pair of innocent little red eyes.
“I’m warning you, Red-eyed, don’t sneak off to the Bear Honeybee Farm, and do not steal honey,” Russell said sternly, “This honey must be saved to gradually grow the swarm, so more honey can be produced in the future. At that time, I’ll let you eat your fill.”
“Squeak,” the Red-eyed Rat King cocked his head, pretending not to understand what Russell was saying.
“In any case, if you dare to steal the honey, I will break your legs,” Russell said sternly.
“Squeak.”
“If you understand, nod your head!”
The Red-eyed Rat King clearly understood and reluctantly nodded his head.
“Good, Red-eyed, that’s my good partner. Who cares about honey when there’s Magic Elixir to eat? Later I’ll go to Fluorescent Castle and exchange a Fantasy Beast Elixir for you, so you can have a proper feast on Magic Potion,” Russell said, smiling as he started to rub the fur of the Red-eyed Rat King.
Despite its shiny appearance, the fur was rough and felt unpleasant to touch.
Just then, Russell heard those very strange whispers again, “The name Red-eyed is just terrible, so lame. Why can that dog be called Kevin, and I can’t? I want to be called Kevin too, Kevin, Kevin, Kevin!”
