Chapter 86: Taken Care Of
Viviana waited until he left the bathroom to relieve herself. He was waiting by the door when she stepped up. And he carried her back to bed.
His bedroom is large, and she has to walk some distance to get to bed, but she didn’t know why he had to carry her. Each time!
In the coming days, every time she woke up, he would wake up too and do a taxi service to the bathroom. She tried to talk him out of it at first, but then she got used to it as he was not planning on relenting.
And... getting carried around was nice. She was never carried around anywhere by anyone. This is a first for her.
Well, she had to be carried when she was paralyzed. That cannot be counted, right?
Carrying her around was not the only thing Leander did. In the mornings, he stayed home and looked after her. He made sure she eats the diet he approved and didn’t let her leave the bed. And at night, he had a disturbed sleep as she did.
She had no idea why he put himself through that when he could have easily avoided it.
He has no need to do this. He did it all with all seriousness of a...She didn’t know who would give this much attention to a woman who has periods.
But the deepest part of her heart where she stores her fond memories almost burst out of space. She didn’t know getting taken care of would make one feel this elated. She’s taken care of a lot of people when they were in need of help. This was the first time she was taken care of without feeling guilty.
Well, this was the first time she let someone take care of her for a simple reason like her periods. She usually feels guilty to have someone help her when she is sick. When she was young, she was sick most of the time. She liked to be active like other kids her age and didn’t want to take the time and effort of the nuns who looked after her.
It was for the same reason, she willed herself and put herself through tough rehabilitation after she got paralyzed. She was on the bed for more than a month, unable to even feel her legs. She was already an orphan who was getting rejected for adoption because of her weak immune system.
At the tender age of seven, when most kids’ biggest worry would be if they can get their favorite snack, she knew that if she couldn’t walk again, she is finished.
And what happened to the polio-ridden girl kept replaying in her mind. She didn’t want that to happen to her. She had grit. She surprised the doctors who diagnosed that she will never walk again with pure will and grit. And maybe Father Flannagan’s prayers helped too.
She didn’t know if she still has that grit in her. After getting struck far too many times, she eventually learned to give up.
Her fate cannot be changed.
And here he is... Leander Kastello. After she had given up, he came into her life and shows her things she didn’t know.
Her lips curved into a smile.
But like the flame of a candle getting blown out by a gust of wind, that smile vanished.
Leo came to her life when she had almost given up too. And what happened to her? Her parents too. They picked her up out of all the healthy and young children, brought her to their home, gave her a separate room to stay in, and poured her love. What happened to them?
She is a jinx. Everyone who loves her will end the same way.
At least Leander Kastello won’t love her. He agreed to kill her too. That’s the only comfort she has.
Maybe it was the diet, she didn’t feel very dizzy after her periods stopped. Or maybe it’s the good rest she got with Leander waiting on her hand and foot. She managed to get a virtual personal assistant device when Leander was in a good mood. She knew asking for a phone would be too much.
She listened to a lot of music. And after a long time, she felt like a heavy weight that was burdening her heart was lifted up. She felt free.
Leander would come and go as he pleased. He’d often leave the room in his loungewear and return after some time. She figured that he might be discussing business. But he’d be there when she needed him as if he had a call button installed in his head that read her mind.
Katerina was not as jubilant as before and she guessed it must be because of Nathaniel. But she was smiling and doing her work as usual. Maybe she realized who she is working for only now.
Well, Viviana didn’t want to get involved as long as she is getting food. For a prisoner, and the soon-to-be-dead "wife" of a soon-to-be don, she had a pretty good life.
While she was resting and recuperating, Leander had a lot to deal with. He received a lot of books from the Rose Gardens. He stored them safely in his office because he was told that they are the administrative documents of every business the Kastello family is involved in.
He couldn’t believe that he is actually going to become the next don!
He randomly picked one of the books and it was the account book that recorded the money transfer between the main Kastello estate and Evander’s business. They were all handwritten as his grandfather still doesn’t trust the "machines".
He knew that one of the ways they launder money is by using Evander’s entertainment business, but he was surprised to see the transfer was at times in hundreds of millions per month.
He knew he was rich. He never had to ask for the price before buying anything he liked. No one asked him any questions about his spending.
But five hundred million in a month? Ten billion dollars for a single movie? Do movies cost that much to make? Is the turnover for the entertainment business in millions of dollars? Damn!
Leander got curious and took a deep dive into the financial statements. And he started to find many discrepancies. The money disappeared in black holes and popped out from nowhere... But the money lost was greater than the money returned.
Someone’s skimming from the family. But who? How did it escape the accountant’s eyes? Is he in on it?
Leander’s lips curved to a smirk.
He’s been idle for far too long. Now it’s time for hunting.
He loves his hunt.
