Chapter 83: Request

Leander’s face softened.

"I don’t know why the doctor kept my condition from you, but you knew it when you signed that book," Viviana continued to plead. She wanted to try and influence him to change his mind. She wanted to save a life.

Leander squirmed his fingers to get out of her hold. He doesn’t like to be influenced, and it was obvious what she is doing. But when he looked at her eyes, he...couldn’t shrug her off and storm off like he wants to.

She thinks he knew about it, but he didn’t know about her condition. But she is right. She did tell him. Now he understood why the "joke" he made didn’t land and made her sad.

"I told you and you even mocked me for it. Every doctor is going to have the same diagnosis as him. There is no cure for me. And if you are going to kill him to keep your shame a secret, then~"

"My shame?" Leander raised his brows. She knows how to push his buttons.

Viviana sucked in a deep breath. He would feel ashamed for getting tied up with an infertile woman, but she should have framed it differently.

"I’m saying that you cannot keep this a secret even if you kill him. Truth always has a way to surface. It’s the way of the world. You cannot hide this forever," she said.

"Are you going to tell everyone?" His voice deepened in annoyance. She looks cute when she’s not saying stupid things.

She was not cute now.

"I won’t!" Viviana raised her hand as if she was swearing a solemn oath. "I just...You cannot stack up lies over the truth and think you’re safe. Truth can’t be buried forever. It will see the light when you least expect it."

"Not if you burn them! Ashes don’t speak, Minnie."

Leander turned to leave. He did not want to hear her preaching.

What does she expect to happen when this truth is out? Self-flagellating fool!

Truth always has a way to surface, she says... How naïve!

As someone who burnt a thousand truths in hell, he would never agree with her. Just like he made Viviana Mattias die, just like he could turn the Heberden blowout into a gas leak, just like he bent the truths a thousand more times, this time too, he will succeed.

Truth can be buried with money and power.

He never was planning on killing or hurting Nathaniel. Killing Nathaniel now would alert his grandfather and he will know that there is something wrong. The best thing he could do for now is to pretend everything is fine and dandy.

He had a feeling that everything will be fine. Medicine is advancing very fast and there will be a way to cure her. In the meantime, she needs to heal her heart.

She did not change his mind about Nathaniel. But if he walks away, he might give the impression that he listened to her. He heard women love to be listened to.

Will she appreciate my "change of heart"? Will she smile at me? Will she hug me in delight? Will she thank me?

"Kastello, please..." Viviana held his hand.

Clenching his jaws, Leander turned to face her. Her cheeks were wet with tears.

Tears... where does she store these many tears, anyway? Is there a storage tank in her skull?

"What now?" he asked. He tried to be annoyed but her tears shake his heart to the core every time. He couldn’t get annoyed.

"I have a request," she gripped his hands hard. "My birthday wish—if you want to take it that way..."

"Okay, I’ll bite," Giving up, Leander sat by her side. "Just stop crying!" he held her cheek.

She agreed to buy him a gift and it is only fair if he listens to her. He was planning to dismiss her wish if she talks about Nathaniel again.

Maybe he can ask her to call him by his name in exchange for Nathaniel’s life.

Viviana could only see his blurred face. He said so easily that he will burn the truth. How many more will be burnt by the Kastello family to hide the truth about her? She couldn’t bear it any longer.

"The truth will be out. Your grandfather will find out," she said and wiped her face. Her eyes cleared up and he was looking at her with disappointment. She didn’t mind it. He needs to know her thoughts. She has to make it clear.

"I will be told to put down, Kastello," she said.

Shaking his head, Leander tried to stand up. He did not like that she is talking about herself as if she was a dog. But she held his hand.

"Think about it, Kastello. You know it," she added.

Leander shook his hand to get out of her grip. Lionel thinks that his grandfather would put her life in danger. Killing the wife to marry again is common among the mafia families he knows.

But he didn’t think that his grandfather would easily ask to rid of his wife after he made sure to let everyone know how important she is to him. He knew his grandfather can be convinced. If he asks for it, his grandfather will be...patient.

He fisted his hands as he remembered something.

Helena!

He begged his grandfather to allow him to marry her. He pleaded that he would die without her. But his grandfather didn’t change his decision.

Uh!

Leander took in a deep breath and looked at Viviana. "You are my wife," he said.

Yes, she is different. She is not his lover. And so, he will protect her.

Viviana scoffed as he said the same phrase again. "What difference does it make? Nothing changes just because I am your wife! What happened to Victoria, huh? What happened to her? Why did she disappear? Did she~"

"You know nothing!" Leander gritted his teeth and pulled his hand out of her grip. Viviana pressed her lips as she saw he was angry. Leander’s eyes got dark as he gripped his cheek. "Who told you about Victoria? Was it Katerina?"

Victoria is his father’s first wife. She died of an illness long before his father married his mother. His mother doesn’t like her name to be mentioned in the house. He’s heard from the senior servants that his father was besotted with his first wife.

"NO!" Viviana refused immediately. She was trying to help Katerina and she didn’t know how she got him angered more. "Let go," she pushed his hand away. "I saw her name on the record book that day..."

Leander’s hold on her loosened and his eyes softened.

"Come to the point," he asked.

"Yes," Viviana took in a deep breath. Her eyes were still puffy as she cried a lot, but they were focused. "When the time comes, I want to have an easy death...by your hands, Kastello," she said.
