Chapter 58: Getting Married to...

Viviana’s finger joints creaked as she tried to move her hand. Her heart pounded and her ears felt stuffed. Blood rushed to her head as she was bending on the table.

She almost blacked out.

I won’t do it!

She decided to voice her thoughts. She cannot be forced to marry.

*Bang* *Bang*

Viviana flinched at the sound. Before she could react, she was pushed to the back and Leander stepped in front of her. Evander held her back as she almost fell down. The pen rolled on the floor.

Was that a gunshot?

She peeked out from behind Leander’s back. Leander was pointing two guns to the front and their table was covered entirely with Leander’s people. They all had guns.

There was confusion for some time with everyone drawing their guns out.

"Calm down!" Lionel shouted pushing away the guy with the gun who stood in front of him, covering him. He must be his bodyguard.

Viviana looked to her front. Why is Leander standing in front of her? Is he protecting her because she is going to be his brother’s wife?

Viviana wetted her lips and observed Leander. With his broad back only visible to her, she couldn’t see his face. But he didn’t appear to be shaken by this incident.

Leander walked around the table and keeping one of his guns in the holster in his waist, he lowered his other gun too. He gestured Lionel to stay back. With Steve to his side, Leander walked where the gunshot originated, like the lion he is.

Whatever her thoughts about Leander were, she admired his courage as he walked toward the conflict.

Viviana wondered if it was some infighting. With everyone having weapons, this situation might escalate into a mass murder type of thing with everyone shooting at everyone. Mass hysteria is a thing.

In case that happens, she wondered if that would be a bad thing. With every mafia family assembled here, if they die, the world will be a better place tomorrow.

Viviana clutched her hands together. Evander placed his hand on her back and she gritted her teeth to bear it. While his brother is out there trying to dissipate the tension, this guy is hiding behind the bodyguards. She didn’t know if he was smart or just a coward.

But she was more curious to know what was going on there.

With guns pointed in all directions, Leander walked through them, unbothered, as if he was walking through a flower garden.

Now, Viviana was not someone who watches romance movies. But she has watched her fair share of action movies. And watching Leander, she...

"Scared?"

Evander whispered in her ear and she flinched. She didn’t want to look at Evander’s face and didn’t even react to him.

"Don’t worry... You’ll get used to it," he said. Viviana clenched her jaws.

Viola scoffed at Evander. She couldn’t understand what he was planning. It was hurtful to see a woman disrespecting her son like that.

Turns out, one of the waiters "disrespected" the wife of the Corolla Mafia Family and so the don Corolla killed the waiter. Viviana pressed her lips seeing Leander patting the shoulder of the don and diffusing the tension with a smile in his face, apologizing for the disrespect they suffered in their family dinner.

All was forgiven and forgotten as Leander clinked glasses with don Corolla. Everyone started smiling and laughing once again. The men surrounding their table dissipated. Leander waved his hand and his men dragged the dead waiter out of the room. Another bunch of guys went there with cleaning tools and cleaned the blood.

Within a few minutes, the hall resumed to how it was before the gunshots went off. It was as if no life was lost. No one cared what kind of "disrespect" warranted the waiter’s death. Everyone carried on with their merriment.

Viviana sighed. The waiter’s face was imprinted in her mind. He looked not over twenty. She’s heard of these dinner parties where they hire part-timers. The pay would be insanely high which was attractive to students and those who want to make connections. But she knew the risk was proportional to the pay.

Who can she blame? The pitiful part-timers who want to make easy money not caring for the risks or the rich b*stards who don’t know the value of human life? Both are at fault.

She felt Leander’s eyes on her and she looked at him. He averted his eyes and walked back to the table. Lionel asked the band to start the music. Once again, the singer sang "Can’t help falling in love" in the beautiful voice of the king of rock music.

Leander picked the pen and offered it to her. He mouthed something. Viviana couldn’t figure out if he said ’sign’ or ’Ciara’.

Viviana let out a deep sigh from her gut. She is in a place where people kill others with no consequences. She can stand by her principles and say that she won’t marry Evander.

But who will it affect?

Leander made it clear. At least, she can blame the dead waiter for his death if she needs an excuse for not speaking up. But what reason will she tell herself if Ciara dies?

If Ciara dies in the hands of Leander, and ends up like the woman in the picture Leander showed her, she can never forgive herself.

NO matter what, the calmness that she could reach in her heart, escaped her. She could not calm down. Her heart raced to the extent that she thought it might burst.

Yet, she got the pen from Leander’s hands. He stepped to the side and with a steady step, she walked to the table.

The tip of the pen kissed the paper that would ruin her life. Viviana took a deep breath to control her shaking hands.

"Clap!" Lionel encouraged everyone as he took on his self-appointed role of an emcee.

Amidst the claps of the dregs of the society, Viviana penned the name that was offered to her knowing it will ruin her.

Minerva.

It was odd for her to start her name with ’M’ once again. When she learned to write her name for the first time in kindergarten, she learned to write ’M’ too. And after starting her name with ’V’ for a long time, she is once again having ’M’ as her initial.

Stupid!

She thought, as her eyes filled with tears. She surely thinks about weird things at the weirdest times. But she refused to let her tears fall and pulled them in.

Evander placed his hand on the small of her back once more and she took a side step, holding out the pen. She saw Evander stepping front from her peripheral vision.

Before Evander’s hand reached for the pen, Leander grabbed the pen.

"One moment," Leander told Evander.

Evander knitted his brows not appreciating the interruption. Not minding him, Leander bowed and scribbled on the paper.

"What the..." Evander grumbled.

Lionel saw what was happening and started laughing.

Viviana’s eyes widened.

What the actual f*ck!
