Chapter 39: Getting Back

Leander walked out of the Rose Garden angrily. This is the second time he was denied meeting his grandfather. His grandfather must still be angry that he refused to marry that lamebrain child.

’Child bride...’

Viviana’s voice echoed in his mind, and he accidentally walked into his car and hit his abdomen.

"Capo..." Steve took the initiative and opened the door for him.

Clearing his throat, Leander sat inside the car. His grandfather is too busy to meet him, but he gave an appointment to meet Hosea Donatello. Leander could sense that they must be planning something without his knowledge.

Even his mother refused to meet him. But she must be busy... doing something.

Leander figured it must be something to do with the dinner that is arranged by his family. His grandpa might be planning on announcing his engagement. But with that lamebrain? Is that why that nuisance brazenly came to his house announcing herself as his fiancée leading to that woman?

Ugh!

That should be the case. That must be why his grandfather is refusing to meet him.

"To the Donatello Mansion," he told the driver.

He shouldn’t have let that nuisance go without any word. He was so mad at her yesterday that he let her go. And now she had asked her father to talk on her behalf. The nerve...

Is she thinking that she has a chance to be my... Ugh!

-----

Leander sat cross-legged (ankle over the knee) and his long muscular arm was spread on the backrest of an entire couch. Steve was standing by his side with his hands behind him. Leander’s lips curved up and he shook his foot as he looked around the house.

"Everything’s the same as I remember," he looked at the man sitting in front of him with his knees together. His hands were on his knees, and he was leaning forward. He was sitting like a girl in his own house.

Leander smirked.

Hosea Donatello is that desperate for money!

The Donatello family used to be a very rich family as they were in politics for generations. But Hosea’s father lost everything due to his association with the losing side. Hosea tried to rebuild the wealth and he lost more; it seems.

Leander’s mother would change the interiors of the Rose Garden every two or three years to go with the current trend. But the Donatello family has had the same vase centerpiece for decades. They must be truly poor.

Hosea shuffled in his seat rather uncomfortably. "Yes, we love the vintage décor and left it unchanged," he smiled awkwardly. He didn’t understand why he was stopped from going out by Leander himself.

Is Leander here to apologize for scaring his daughter the previous day? That should be the case. Don Peter must have talked to Leander to not scare his bride-to-be and he must be here to apologize.

Hosea looked at his wife who was clutching her skirt in anger as she understood the underlying insult of Leander’s words. She was angry at her husband’s reply too. She didn’t marry into a poor family, all right? She should not be subjected to these insults! What’s worse is her husband is too stupid to even understand the insult. The shame!

Leander patted his fingers on the armrest. "Ask her to come down," he said looking at the staircase. He saw a shadow there and knew it was the nuisance.

Hosea immediately called for Nadia and the girl came down pulling down her skirt. She was twisting and rubbing her neck as she got down.

Look at her clothes! She is a child! Who told her that she is ready for marriage?

Nadia smiled and did a little wave to Leander as she walked into the room.

Child bride...

Viviana’s voice echoed in Leander’s mind once again. He felt the knife in his heart getting twisted once more. His facial muscles stiffened, and his eyes filled with malice.

Is she taking me as a fool?

"You may wonder why I am here." Leander looked at Hosea. "I live in a separate house, but our family hasn’t separated our households," he said.

Hosea nodded. "We all know how much you respect your grandfather and adore~"

"Your daughter insulted my grandfather’s loyal servant yesterday. Katerina is dear to my grandfather," Leander interjected Hosea in an insulting tone. "Your daughter, with all her insurmountable intelligence having lived longer than any of us was willing to teach us the better way to run our household. I came here to learn from her..."

He pressed his lips and glared at Nadia. He cannot make it about that woman. People will only insult her as his mistress. No one can talk badly about her.

No one can! Certainly not this lamebrain!

He should get back at Nadia for her. He still can’t get over that woman’s tears. She was smiling in the morning, but something was missing from her beautiful eyes. He wanted her to have that spark back. He was so desperate that he was willing to see the hate in her eyes rather than that fake smile.

The smile on Nadia’s face vanished. Tears collected in her already puffed eyes. She couldn’t sleep the entire night and when she was told Leander came for a visit, she thought he came to his senses. But now...

"Ahhh..." Hosea rubbed his palms on his thighs out of stress. He did not see that coming. "Leander, I’m... She’s still young and got a lot to learn~"

"Young? Isn’t she old enough to marry?" Leander raised his brows. He smirked seeing Hosea too stunned for words.

Ha! Gotcha!

"Yes, you are right!" Hosea’s wife stuck her nose in.

Leander clenched his jaws.

"We have failed our daughter. You- you should help," she stood behind Hosea. Leander could see her pinching her husband.

"Yes," Hosea nodded. "She should know the rules of your family."

Leander smirked. These people are so easy...heh!

He patted his knee. "My mom was not always perfect. My dad..." Leander met Nadia’s eyes for a moment before looking at Hosea. "My dad had a belt... you know... just the kind of leather belt you are wearing..." he pointed at Hosea’s belt.

Hosea stood up in shock. Is Leander suggesting a belting for his daughter?

Nadia clutched her chest and retreated. She was about to run up the stairs when Nadia’s mother grabbed her. Before Hosea could say anything, she asked for his belt.

Felicia was not going to lose the opportunity to have money again. Her daughter needs to marry into the Kastello family, so she could remodel her house. She cannot let everyone insult her.

Hosea looked at Leander. His pitiful face didn’t move Leander. Leander stared back at him emptily.

Nadia started her screaming episodes. She even went as far as to enact a panic attack drama.

Hosea looked at Leander in a pleading way. He had raised his daughter without even striking her once. He gave her everything she asked for. She is his princess. And now, she got herself into trouble with Leander.

What could he do? How can he watch his precious daughter getting hurt?
