Chapter 299: Doubts

Viviana clutched Leander’s shirt as tightly as she could. She didn’t want to let go of his warmth. Leander carried her to bed.

"Do you want medication?" he asked.

She was sobbing and he knew she was hurting. If it was her abdomen that was hurting, he can give her medications. But if it is her heart...

"It’s okay, Lemon..." he rocked her. "It’s okay. I’m here..."

He hugged her. It broke his heart to see her cry. He never liked her tears. And now...

He looked at the door sensing a disturbance. There was a shadow he could see under the door. He clenched his jaws. He hated doing this.

He placed her down on the bed and pried her hands off him. She looked at him. Even in that dim light, he could discern the tears in her eyes. He wiped her face.

Hardening his tone, he said, "There is one reason why I turn my back on you," he said.

Viviana held his hand which was wiping away her tears. She is his wife and he can’t even stay in the room with her for more than ten minutes. She could see that he wants to comfort her and yet...

Maybe that was not the case. She’s just being stupid.

She started to lose hope.

"What is the reason?" she asked.

Leander took in a deep breath. Saying nothing he walked out of the room. Viviana sat in the bed hugging her knees. The baby cried and Viviana rushed to the crib.

The little cub had gotten hungry again...

"What an adorable little cub you are..." Viviana kissed the baby’s cheek.

The baby was not consoled by her voice. She was hungry. She needed milk.

Viviana brought the baby to the kitchen. Mary curiously got the baby from Viviana’s hands.

"Are you okay, Mary?" Viviana asked seeing the layer of perspiration on Mary’s forehead.

"I’m fine... It’s just... humidity, I guess..." Mary smiled.

Viviana turned her back to Mary to prepare a bottle for the baby. Mary gulped looking at the baby. Taking in a deep breath, she looked around to see if anyone was around.

As there was no one, she pressed her lips looking at the crying baby. She gently rubbed the bald head of the baby. There were very thin strands of hair near the baby’s ear. She grabbed a couple of hairs between her fingers.

As if the baby sensed the danger, she started to cry more.

"Coming... your food is coming..." Viviana turned.

Mary’s heart pounded. But she didn’t let go of the hair. She pulled them as hard as she could. The baby’s cry intensified and Mary’s eyes watered seeing the baby’s face reddening.

"Oh... poor baby... Sorry for letting you go hungry... I’m sorry..." Viviana shook the bottle.

What a hungry cub! She must have gotten her father’s genes.

Mary gripped the hair safely in her hand. After Viviana got the baby, she excused herself and ran to the pantry. She safely stored the hair in a plastic Ziplock bag.

She wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes.

[It’s done. Come collect it.]

She sent the text to someone.

Viviana didn’t find the oddity in Mary’s behavior. Mary was someone she trusted.

She fed the baby with the formula, sitting in the kitchen. They said that the formula is a great substitute for breast milk, but Viviana was not convinced. As long as Maya was available, she decided to get help from Maya and she also investigated the breast milk banks around her area.

This baby deserves the best!

After the baby was fed, she patted her back for her to burp. The baby let out a deep burp and spit some of the milk on her shoulders as a consolation prize.

"What a naughty one..." Viviana kissed the round cheeks of the baby.

The baby was not very pleased by her kissing. She stretched herself. Holding her in the arm, Viviana observed the face of the baby. She heard that most babies tend to resemble their fathers.

The baby looked back at her. It was just a newborn and she was not smiling, but she could see that the baby was in a good mood. She gently rubbed her head.

The baby blinked her big eyes. Viviana got engrossed in the dark irises of the baby. It almost looked like...

Her eyes!

Viviana shook her head and took that thought out of her brain. At least, she tried to.

She observed the baby more while gently rubbing her head. The baby enjoyed it. Her little mouth went ’O’ and she closed her eyes.

She does not look anything like Leander... Maybe she resembles her mother... She must be pretty...

Viviana sank into her thoughts. She soon got out of her reverie seeing Katerina leaning at her. She didn’t realize that she was staring at the baby for almost five minutes.

"Signora, do you need anything else?" Katerina asked.

"No, thanks," Viviana stood up.

It’s already late and Katerina would like to retire to her room. She cannot be hogging the kitchen stopping them from going to bed.

She walked to the door but stopped. "Katerina, has Signora Palatini delivered her child?" she asked.

She didn’t know why she thought this baby could be Helena’s. Helena was sure that she was carrying a boy child.

But she did feel weird when Leander talked about bringing home remnants of another woman. She used that same phrase when she mentioned Helena. For him to use that same phrase when mentioning the baby...

"I’ll find out, Signora," Katerina bowed her head.

"Thanks, Katerina," Viviana walked to her room.

The baby almost fell asleep as she walked to her room. But she woke up once Viviana stopped.

"Who is your mother, little one?" she asked gently rocking the baby.

If Helena is her mother, then...

She didn’t think Leander would be the father.

She looked at the baby. Her heart melted for that baby.

"It doesn’t matter... You came to me for a reason. I will protect you no matter what," she kissed the forehead of the baby.

The baby fell asleep assuredly in her embrace.

-----

The next day, Leander got out of the house early. It was not like he had a lot of work to handle. He just wanted to be out.

"Stop the car," he told Mark.

Steve noticed Carlos Pacino, the cop who has been tailing Viviana for the past month. He’s one of the "good ones" as most people would describe. He is said to be fearless when it comes to enacting law and order. He cares for nothing but the law and justice. He could be called the opposite of Leander.

Leander rolled down the window. "Care for a chat?" he asked Carlos.

Carlos was surprised. He tried to turn and leave instinctively, but then he stood firm. Taking in a deep breath, he looked at Leander.

"I have nothing to say to you, Leander Kastello," he said.

There was an ample amount of pride in his voice and his conceited voice looked down on Leander.

Leander smirked.

Ah... the holier-than-thou type.

He got reminded of his wife.

"Then I suggest you try listening," Leander said. "How about that café over there?"
