Chapter 281: Seed of Doubt
"No..." Leander sat on the couch. "I heard that Leonardo took on a lot of his father’s roles. Did you find out anything about Vito’s health?" he asked.
"His health?" Lionel cleared his throat. "I haven’t heard anything. But the Vitale family reigns behind an iron curtain. No one would know anything about them unless they let it know... By the way, I don’t think them looking for Bellissima is about Vito’s health. Do you?"
Leander looked pensive. "Helena is her sister. They are fraternal twins, same father," he looked at Lionel.
"That’s..." Lionel hummed.
If that were the case, the interest of Vitale in Bellissima alone is suspicious. Could it be related to Vito’s health?
"Speaking of Helena... Word on the grapevine is that you met her last week..." Lionel said. He didn’t want to bring it up. He wanted to leave it as rumors.
Since Leander brought up her name, he asked to clarify. But seeing Leander’s reaction, he did not feel any confidence.
"Leo, should I be concerned for Bellissima?" Lionel asked.
"She is my wife, Nellie. No one else needs to spare any concern for her!" Leander said, his eyes focused on his laptop.
Lionel could see that Leander was drawing a boundary. But he was concerned. A lot happened in their life. Not properly dealing with a miscarriage has broken up marriages to his knowledge. Not to mention, dealing with the Vitale family might have added some stress to Leander along with his added strain after his brother’s death. Not to mention the commissioner who is hellbent on bringing the Kastello family to justice...
Leander could be stressed. And men become stupid when they are stressed.
"I thought you’d deny meeting Helena..." Lionel stood up.
"I’m going to meet her again, Nellie. And probably a few more times. I am not going to lie about that to you," Leander said.
"Does Bellissima know that?" Lionel asked.
He was shocked to see the indifference in Leander’s eyes. He had no ripples in his expression as if he did nothing wrong.
"Why should she know?" Leander asked. "No one who cares for her will let her know. No one would want her to spend the rest of her life crying, right?"
Lionel fisted his hands. A lot of words came to his mind, but he held back. He didn’t want to isolate his only friend. But isn’t a good friend supposed to advise his friend when he loses track?
"This is not right. Don’t break her heart, Leo. That’s all I am going to say," Lionel walked to the door. "Tell Bellissima I’m out on an urgent business," he turned to look at Leander. His eyebrows were furrowed with disgust. He wanted to have dinner cooked by Bellissima. "You ruined my appetite!"
Banging the door shut, Lionel walked out.
Viviana played with the puppies. She saw the driver Luca standing by the bushes. He doesn’t usually stare at her like that and so she looked at him.
"Do you want to ask me something, Luca?" she asked. He appeared to be hesitating to speak and so she urged him to speak.
Luca stood there cracking his knuckles. His eyes got red as he struggled to speak. He looked like he was in a serious dilemma. He looked around looking for something or someone.
Viviana stood up and walked to Luca. "You can talk to me," she said.
Luca took in a deep breath. "Leave, Signora. Leave before Peter kills you," he spoke as low as he could.
Viviana’s heart skipped a beat. She had a feeling that Peter never accepted her but for Luca to talk about it... "What do you know, Luca?" she asked.
"Capo... He met with Helena in a hotel last week," Luca said.
Viviana was taken aback. Luca took a giant leap from what he was saying earlier to this. Why did Leander meet Helena?
"...in a...restaurant, right?" she asked.
Luca shook his head. "A hotel room, Signora. In absolute secrecy. Other than Steve, only I know because I drove him there. They were in the room for more than an hour~"
"What were you saying about Peter?" Viviana asked Luca. She didn’t want to know the details.
What were they doing in a hotel room for more than an hour? Isn’t Helena pregnant? Even if they were just talking, why do it in a hotel room?
Of all the women, why Helena?
Maybe they weren’t in the room for an hour. They probably talked for a minute or two and Helena left early. Leander probably hit the bar and that’s why he was in the hotel for more than an hour.
Yeah, that’s what happened.
She didn’t want to learn more.
"Victoria... They say Capo’s father’s first wife gave birth to a child in secret. The child was very well-grown when Peter killed Victoria. The child too died in the fire—the Abenney fire. I know. My father told me he saw Victoria with a girl child. Peter had her killed, Signora. He never liked her. Peter will kill you too. You are no longer~"
"Luca!"
Viviana heard Steve from the distance.
"Here!" Luca took in a deep breath and patted his cheek. "I was playing with the puppies!" Luca ran from behind the bushes to Steve. He gave a meaningful glance at Viviana before leaving.
Of course, he risked his life, by giving her this info.
Viviana sat on the lawn holding her head. There was too much information she needed to process.
Was Luca going to say that now that she has lost Leander’s favor, Peter will kill her easily?
Victoria... A girl child...
No way!
Was Victoria, Leona’s mother the same Victoria Leander’s father married?
Does that mean that Leona was Leander’s sister?
Leander’s father was her father?
Ah... Leona didn’t know who her father was. She grew up belligerent after being bullied as a b@Stard when she was young. That’s how she grew up to stand up against bullies.
So, she found out who her father was? That was nice. Then, did she get to meet her father?
That could be the case. Leona was pretty close with Leander the day before. She must have known.
But why didn’t Leona tell me that Leander was her brother?
Viviana sank into her thoughts. She didn’t know why she resigned to think about Leona when she received much more devastating news regarding Leander and Helena.
She really didn’t want to think about it more. So, she thought about the other information.
She came out of her reverie when she heard Lionel’s car leaving. She ran to the courtyard. But his car had already left the gates.
"He had an urgent business."
Viviana turned to hear Leander’s voice.
"Oh," she said and walked inside the house.
Leander held her hand and pulled her into his embrace. She struggled.
"Let go. I smell like dogs."
