Chapter 255: Inexplainable Pain

Leander sat beside Viviana for the rest of the night. It was already the break of dawn when she fell deeply asleep.

The doctor said that he has given her enough pain medications but within an hour, he saw her face twitching in pain and she was perspiring a lot because of the pain.

"Shhh..." he shushed her. "I’m here, Mousy... I am here."

Too many painkillers won’t be good for her. She must have to brave through some of the pain. Speaking of pain, he felt numb as time passed.

He had never felt such tiredness before. He couldn’t even move his hands or legs. His brain stopped thinking. And yet, he couldn’t fall asleep.

Not wanting to look at her suffering, he covered her abdomen with his hand and stared at the ceiling. There was a thin line of golden sunray that slipped through the curtains. It grew and grew and it almost touched the wall.

He stared. His mind was empty and no thoughts were going on in his head. He stared at the light meaninglessly. He only felt more and more tired.

He heard some movements by the door. It must be Steve. He must be wondering if he should knock on the door or not.

Go away, Steve! I don’t care about anything.

Steve left after a minute. He’s a loyal man who understands him without words. He was grateful for him.

The cogwheels of his brain slowly started turning. He switched off his phone last night. There would be a lot of missed calls and texts.

Is Evander dead yet?

He was lying still the whole time and yet his back hurt as he tried to sit up. He’s never felt this way before. He would stretch himself and move forward. There are always things to look forward to.

But now, even when he knew that his grandfather would need him by his side, he couldn’t function. He is weighed down by grief.

She is used to this pain. She is accepting of this pain. She refuses the surgery. His worrying about her pain is not going to do any good for her.

If so, why? What is he grieving about?

It can’t be... Is he grieving for his child? That can’t be. He never wanted that child... Right? He probably is grieving about the brother he lost. His inability to do anything to help his wife with her suffering is also affecting him.

He turned on his phone. There were almost a hundred missed calls from his grandfather and some fifty calls from Barnabas. There were a bunch of unknown numbers too.

Why did Lionel call me?

He dialed Lionel first.

"Condolences for your loss, Leo," Lionel said.

It sounded bland; like he was saying what he was supposed to say and not what he felt.

"Thanks," Leander mirrored Lionel’s emotions.

"Why did you turn off your phone, man? Don Kastello called me thinking I could do something," Lionel asked.

Leander walked to the window. He didn’t want to move and when he tried it hurt him physically. But he pushed through. He needs to be active for his wife’s sake.

"Nellie..." Leander whispered. "She had a miscarriage last night..."

Lionel was stunned. "I’m sorry, Leo... I am truly sorry..." His heart got sunken with sadness. It shouldn’t have happened to his friend.

He remembered Leander mentioning that she cannot carry a child. Leander was under the impression that she cannot lift a child but he thought differently.

Lionel inferred that Leander must have known better. And it sucks!

"You’re still in Abenney?" Lionel asked. "You will have to arrange your brother’s funeral. What are you going to do?"

"I don’t know, Nellie. I don’t know. Should I go there? I don’t want to..." Leander leaned on the wall. "I can’t leave her alone. This..."

... couldn’t have happened at a worse time...

Leander stopped himself from speaking further. He cannot bother Lionel with his ramblings. He is a man. He will have to deal with everything like a man.

"Shall I send Brie there? She’ll~"

"No, I’ll take care of everything. Don’t be bothered. La-..." Leander paused. "Wait, did you say Brie is with you?"

Lionel chuckled awkwardly. "I received a text from your phone."

Leander furrowed his brows. "Wait for a second," he said and checked his texts.

’I do not know what your intentions with Gabriella are. I know for sure that you are avoiding all contact with...’

Leander only read the first few lines of the text and he already felt like he had drank a gallon of sugar syrup.

"You thought it was me?" Leander asked.

"I knew it was Bellissima. I was surprised you gave her access to your phone and I am more surprised that she didn’t delete the text," Lionel said.

What an adorable couple!

"She’s...something..." Leander’s eyes ended up on the bed. She used to look at him with hate-filled eyes; if not she was scared of him. But now, she has the guts to send some cringy text to his friend and not erase the evidence.

"Ring me if you need any help," Lionel said. "Once again, I am sorry for your loss."

Lionel ended the call.

Gabriella asked Lionel about the call. Lionel, with a heavy heart, told her about the miscarriage.

"She was pregnant?" Gabriella was shocked. "I thought she cannot get pregnant. Oh my God!" She covered her face with her hands. "She’d be devastated... Poor Melanie..."

As she silently sobbed, Lionel received a text.

[Anyone who tells her about it will die a painful death]

That’s Leander, all right?

"She does not know," Lionel said and showed Gabriella the text.

"Good," Gabriella said. "But... how long can he hide it? She will know. It’s not like..." Gabriella sighed.

Whatever! She hoped Melanie could be kept from this devastating truth.

Leander made sure she was sleeping and stepped out of the room. He called his grandfather. He must have already received news of his wife’s miscarriage.

Peter sounded meek as if he had aged a decade. "How is your wife doing?" he asked the moment he answered his phone.

Leander was touched.

"She’s fine... she’s resting..."

Peter was silent for some time. "Our first child was miscarried too," Peter said. "These are common. Don’t let it weigh you down."

"Yes, Grandpa," Leander said. He was so moved by his grandfather’s understanding. "I’ll be there tomorrow to arrange for the funeral. Katerina will take care of Minerva."

There was silence once again.

"I should have let you take your revenge, Leander..." Peter’s voice was shaking. "They’ve... they’ve torn my grandbaby to pieces... They sodomized him and they posted videos in something called the dark...something..."

"Dark web?" Leander asked.

Leonardo is capable of doing such a thing. With his relationship with Minerva unknown, he wanted to make sure Leonardo is taught a lesson.

He will come for Minerva next.

"We still can get back at him, Grandpa," he said.

Peter’s long sigh from the other end made Leander’s heart squeeze.
