Chapter 221: Two Birds One Stone

Chapter 221: Two Birds One Stone

Leander watched as the smile on her face reduced and she fell asleep.

"You were not kidding when you said you were tired, huh?" he fixed her hair.

He wiped her and covered her with the duvet. He placed his hand over the bandage. It was not a big wound thankfully. If it was on him, he wouldn’t have minded it.

But that wound was on his wife. She is complaining of pain. His heart was burning.

When she fell limply in his arms, he thought that he had lost her. That feeling... he’d rather die than feel that way again.

Without thinking twice, she jumped in front of a bullet to save him. Honestly, what can he do with her?

It was not her desire to die that made her do that. He knew it. He knew it because she shouted his name as she stepped to possible death. She wanted to save him and didn’t care about anything else.

He held her hand and kissed it. He didn’t know why she would do that for him.

It was a good thing Leonardo Vitale was a bad shot. Otherwise... what if something terrible happened to her? His heart shook even thinking of living knowing he won’t see her face again. He’d starve without her cooking.

Leander asked Lionel to have an eye on Leonardo and have an ear to what his father was planning. That’s why he was in hiding the whole time.

Don Waldorf seemed to be busy dealing with Palatini and that’s how Lionel could take control of the port and tried to stop Leonardo from leaving as he got information that the Vitale family owns a seaplane.

But Don Vitale got involved (not surprisingly) and Don Waldorf overrode Lionel’s orders and aided in Leonardo Vitale’s escape. Don Vitale had involved the Home Minister of their country for his son’s safety so the cops were of no use.

He planned on taking Leonardo’s head off. Or at least his hands. He dared to think that he can hold his wife’s hand. His wife did good by refusing him openly. She did good.

Leander smiled as he remembered the feeling of her warmth on his back the more Leonardo tried to force her hand. He did worry a bit when Leonardo promised his safety for her changing sides.

But she didn’t change sides. She was not doing lip service when she said that she trusted him against the Vitale family.

"I’ll make sure he doesn’t bother you anymore, Mousy," he kissed her cheek.

The Vitale mob could hire a hit for the tail he sent to report on Leonardo Vitale. The Vitale family sure is dangerous. But that doesn’t mean that he is going to let them mess with his wife.

He touched her face. She was warm and breathing. That was a relief. She is fine and is not hurting anywhere. She was not affected mentally.

He thought that she would be cranky after he mocked her. But she was in good spirits.

She is with him, alive and well.

Thank goodness!

Now he can get to his business.

Leander carefully walked out of the room. She was sleeping peacefully. But he won’t sleep until he gets back at the Vitale family for the blood she spilled.

It might have been a few drops. But they should know that they messed with the wrong woman.

He saw a reflection on the rails of the stairs, as he was about to enter his office. It was not Katerina. He walked to the stairs to check who that was.

"Brie?" he called for Gabriella who was leaning on the wall with her eyes closed. By the hand movements, Leander could figure that she was saying prayers.

Gabriella opened her eyes. "Leander," she looked at him.

Leander’s heart filled with guilt hearing her voice. His mind replayed the pain-filled voice he heard in the tape. Evander caused her so much damage and he had closed his eyes and ears for years not willing to listen.

Come to think of it, he has yet to meet his grandfather. He forgot about that entirely. But it is late and he can meet his grandfather in the morning.

He needs to check how Evander is doing.

Leander walked to Gabriella. She got down a couple of stairs. Leander stopped. It seems like everyone’s first reaction when they see him is to back away.

But he did not think that they are wrong to be wary of him.

"Brie, I am sorry I didn’t hear your side. I assumed~"

"How is she doing?" Brie interjected Leander.

Leander nodded. It appears that Brie does not want to talk to him about it. It’s fine. He was angry at himself too for ignoring her for years. "She’s fine. It is just a flesh wound. She’ll be fine."

"That’s good," Brie leaned on the wall with a sigh of relief. "I was worried..." she patted her chest.

Leander saw how relieved Brie was to hear that Viviana was fine. He wondered how that little woman could get this many true friends.

He couldn’t even name one other person than Lionel. He technically has no friends. He has allies and that is different.

Leander turned to walk to his office. He has a lot to do.

"Leander," Brie called him.

Leander stopped and looked at her.

"Thank you for helping me out," Brie said. She had a measured smile on her face and he could see that she was speaking from her heart.

Leander nodded. "I was too late," he said from his heart.

Brie said nothing and looked at him. He hoped that she could see that he was sincere when he apologized.

"Who hurt her?" Brie asked. She wanted to know how Melanie got hurt.

"Other than the oil rigs, what other legal businesses do the Vitale family..." Leander was about to ask her but he stopped as he didn’t want to involve her. She’s already dealing with a lot.

"Was it the Vitale family?" Brie was shocked.

"It was Leonardo," Leander furrowed his brows. "What do you know about him? You said you have some info about the Vitale family. What is it?" he questioned.

"I don’t know much about...anything..." Brie scratched her head. "I bluffed to have a chance to meet Mel-" she cleared her throat as she almost blurted out Viviana’s real name. "Minerva," she chuckled awkwardly.

Leander stared at Brie. Liars... those two are liars. No wonder they get along.

He wanted to force Brie to speak the truth but he remembered his little mouse saying that Brie saved her from cats. He didn’t want to force someone who has helped his wife in the past.

"What do you know about Leona Viceroy?" he asked.

Brie raised her brows in surprise. "She sometimes makes it seem like she was in love with that dead girl, right?" Brie smiled. She wanted to know what Leander was talking about.

"You went to the same school. Have you met her?" Leander asked.

"No, never met her. Never even heard her name until your wife mentioned her to me. She’s..." Brie rubbed her hands. "We tend to remember some things wrongly. You forgot a lot after the fire. She too might have..." she looked at the floor pondering something.

"The girl you used to talk about... Was she Leona?" Brie asked. She thought it was Melanie. But maybe she was wrong?

"I talked to you about her?" Leander asked.

"No," Gabriella bit her lips as she realized she had run her mouth. She heard it from Lionel. Lionel tells her everything. But looking at Leander’s unimpressed glare, she decided not to ask him about that.

"By the way, has she told you about the whale she was friends with?" Brie smiled cheekily.

"Whale?" Leander furrowed his brows. He does not know that! And having a whale as a friend? Really?

"Yes, a whale. Or a shark... I’m not sure. She sure is very imaginative. Not a dull moment with her," Brie smiled and waved her hand. "I see you’re busy. I’ll talk to you later..."

Leander watched Brie get down the stairs. Brie is implying that everything his wife says might not be the truth and might be embellished.

It might be a side effect of growing up as an orphan. But he knew for sure that Leona Viceroy existed. And she was dead.

Leander turned to leave when he heard the thumping of footsteps on the stairs. Brie was running up the stairs.

"Evander was trying to have a meeting with Vito Vitale. If he tries, he will get a meeting with Leonardo Vitale," Brie said and ran down the stairs.

Leander clutched his hands to balls. He already got the information that Leonardo Vitale had offered to meet Evander. Brie’s information just confirmed it for him.

His lips curved to a smirk. If he plans properly, he can get two birds with one stone.

His phone rang with a text notification.

[Leonardo is at Sirona Isles]

Leander’s lips curved to a smirk.

Sirona Isles is a union territory of their country. So, technically, Leonardo hasn’t left the country. But he is in untouchable territory.

He thought Leonardo would return to his father, but he decided to stay in his father’s homeland. It would be hard to touch him there. His father practically owns everything and every politician on that island.

Oh, Leonardo... You should have left the country... Your father won’t be pleased to have his foundation shaken...
