Chapter 218: Going Silent

Chapter 218: Going Silent

The red and blue police lights flashed at the entrance of the parking lot. The sirens went off and Viviana could hear the police escorting the public safely out of the club. There was a commotion outside.

They would come down to the parking lot any time soon. Viviana who was never on the other side got worried. But no one around her seemed to be caring about the presence of cops.

But even if they are gangsters, they won’t attack cops unless they are provoking them. And most of the cops are working for the families. So they probably aren’t much of a threat.

But which family called the cops?

Leander was in a brawl with those guys and was winning. She saw him slam one of the guy’s heads into the pillar. That guy fell limp on the floor. He probably had a heavy concussion or was already dead. Leander still was not slowing down.

She has never seen Leander in his space till then. His eyes were exuding a murderous aura and he bulldozed his way through the horde of men attacking him.

Jason Statham... Leander fought like Jason Statham in Transporter even though he didn’t have guns.

His hits were precise and strong. He immobilized his enemies with just one or two hits.

A guy taller than Leander charged at him. Viviana bit her fingernails wondering how Leander was going to handle it.

*Bam*

A perfectly executed roundhouse kick... that monstrous guy went down. Viviana saw stars revolving around his head.

Leander stretched his neck and walked toward the other men who were now hesitating to attack him. Although she was proud of Leander for being stronger than many, she got a little scared of his strength.

She knew he was strong. She couldn’t even move him when she tried to. But she didn’t know he was this strong. He appeared to have mixed martial arts training. That’s how precise he was.

The Vitale thugs looked at their boss as if they were asking permission to use guns. Leonardo looked a little fidgety with the arrival of the cops. The Vitale family is not from this country and they will be a little careful with the local cops Viviana thought. But Leonardo didn’t ask his men to retreat.

The fedora-wearing man walked to Leonardo with the phone. Leonardo didn’t want to talk but the fedora guy insisted. It appeared that Leonardo was in a position to listen to the fedora guy.

So, is it Vito Vitale on the other end of the phone?

She couldn’t hear what Leonardo said over the sound of grunting and pounding. Leonardo was arguing with the other person on the phone.

"Shit!" Leonardo threw the phone on the ground and then stomped on it hurling curses. He looked monstrous as he took out his anger on the phone.

What is going on?

Viviana got an alert. The fedora guy clapped to get the attention of the men fighting Leander. "Let’s leave," he said. The men followed the fedora guy’s orders and ran away as if they waited for it. The men holding back Steve and the others retreated too.

"Running away, huh?" Leander shouted at them wiping his perspiration on his sleeves. "Why don’t we finish it all now? Stop!" he roared.

Leonardo stared at Viviana and held out his hand, again. He looked at her and then at his hand as if he was asking her to hold his hand.

Viviana couldn’t even get mad at that guy. He looked pitiful. She hid behind Leander avoiding his eyes. She cannot go with that guy.

The fedora guy picked up the broken phone from the ground, pulled Leonardo who was still holding out his hand for her and walked away.

"Cowards," Leander mumbled and turned to face Viviana. He didn’t say anything but she could see that he was asking her how he did.

The murderous aura of a predator in the hunt was missing when he looked at her. It was replaced with a gentleness of a courting gentleman. And looking at those calm eyes, she got calm too.

Show off! Does he want a pat on his head for smacking the shit out of those thugs? But he is awesome in a way.

She held back the smile that formed on her face.

"Did you hurt your hands?" she stepped closer to him and held his hands. There were a lot of bruises on his hands and forearm. She couldn’t see if he was hurt elsewhere. "Poor baby," she pouted. Her eyes watered.

This is the life he lives... She felt sorry for him.

"It’s nothing," Leander pulled his hand out of her grasp. "Don’t cry..." He sounded a little annoyed.

Viviana’s heart hurt seeing the bruises on him. "Your skin’s peeled off. I can see your knuckle bones. How is it not..."

As she was speaking, she saw some movements behind Leander. A car was rushing from her right toward Leonardo. It’s headlights were blaring. But that didn’t grab Viviana’s attention. It was Leonardo.

He was pointing a gun right at Leander’s head.

Viviana’s smile vanished in a fraction of a second. Leander got alert seeing her reaction and tried to look back, but Viviana had already reacted even before her brain properly registered what was going on.

She pushed him to the side while tripping his leg. Even in that desperate time when split-second mattered, she knew that Leander cannot be pushed by her strength and she tripped him.

"LEO!!" she shouted. Danger!

*Bang* *Bang*

Loud gunshots ran in the parking lot.

They say one’s whole life would flash in their eyes in the moments before their death. But Viviana didn’t see her life or her happy moments.

All she saw was this bewildered guy wearing a white suit with a smoking gun in his hand.

I don’t want to die like this!

A thought popped into her head. And she had a feeling that it might be her last thought.

Leander... I want to look at him. I want to look into his eyes...

She felt a strong pull on her right hand but her left side was burning. She was falling. She felt a lot of pain as if she was torn apart. Her eyes were still on Leonardo but a screeching car obscured her view as her head hit something hard.

Pain...

She closed her eyes.

But she was not unconscious. He did hear the abysmal shout of the man with the magnetic eyes she wanted to look at. And there were sounds of gunshots ringing and the car zooming out. She was conscious. She heard everything. But she didn’t want to open her eyes.

It hurt a lot.

"Minnie!" Leander shouted. "Minnie, open your eyes and look at me! Minnie!"

He patted her cheeks. She could not open her eyes. She was comfortable leaning on his chest. The pain in his voice diminished her pain. Or she might be slipping away, she didn’t know. Her heart was still palpitating as if it would burst out at any moment.

"Bl-blood..." Leander stuttered out of pain. "Steve! Get the car!" he shouted. "She’s... my wife... she..." He sounded despondent.

Don’t cry, Leander... I want to look at you...once... before I...

*Silence*

Everything around her went dark and silent. Her perpetually awakened brain which would fill her with various thoughts calmed down leaving her with no noise in her head, going silent.

-----

"You shot her! You shot her!" Ignazio gritted his teeth and almost squeezed Leonardo’s neck. "Your father is going to kill you!"

Leonardo looked behind unconsciously. He was farther away from the club. But he still couldn’t shake the image of that woman plopping on the ground.

His bronze skin had lost its luster and his lips appeared parched. He wetted his lips.

"Why?" he turned to Ignazio. "Why, Iggy? Why did she do that?" His dark eyes were unfocused.

"Don Vitale asked you to not mess with her. And now you..." Ignazio gritted his teeth. "Hope that she was not fatally hit..." he sighed.

"But..." Leonardo held his head with both his hands.

"I told you not to mess with the lion’s wife! You saw how strong he was. And now you’ve managed to get one more enemy for our family!" Ignazio continued to chide the ignorant son of his boss. "Don Vitale will not let you stay in this country anymore. You should leave tonight."

"She wanted to kill him just a couple of months ago..." Leonardo placed his hands on Ignazio’s shoulder. "Why did she do that?"

Ignazio sighed. Did he not realize why? It is obvious that she loves him that much.

"I want her, Iggy. I want to...I’ve never met someone like her. When she shouted my name... I..."

"Fuck you, Leonardo! Fuck you! Are you fucking drunk?" Ignazio almost slapped Leonardo. "She was willing to die for her husband and you...Fuck you!"

"No... No, Iggy. I want her. I want her by my side..." Leonardo said. He looked absent-minded. "There’s something...in her, Iggy. I want it..." he placed his hands on his heart. "I just want to talk to her...I want to hear her speak..."

Ignazio looked at Leonardo blankly.
