Chapter 161: Broken Trust
Chapter 161: Broken Trust
"Leander, if you ever want to step into politics, have your wife as an advisor by your side. You’ll surely win," Barnabas laughed.
Leander blinked his eyes. "What is this about?" he asked although he full well knew what that was about.
He thought it would be hard for him to face his grandfather after learning the truth behind the Abenney fire. But everything changed when he saw his grandfather appreciating his wife’s brilliance. He had to hold back his proud smile.
And that woman thinks that his grandfather is going to kill her! What an idiot.
"Don’t act as if you don’t know," Evander stood up and lunged at Leander.
Leander, with not much ripple in his expression looked at Evander.
"Boys!" Peter banged the table.
Evander gritted his teeth at Leander. Leander was calm as a cucumber. Evander could only scoff as he couldn’t provoke Evander in front of Peter before walking back to his seat.
"Ignazio Salvo is here. He tipped his hat to my wife that day," Leander pushed a picture of the fedora guy in the mall that day.
The tremble in Peter’s hand intensified. Barnabas leaned forward in his seat holding his hands together as he looked at Leander. His smile was not on his face anymore.
"He-he tipped his hat?" Barnabas raised his brows.
Yeah, Leander learned that Ignazio tips his hat before humiliating that person.
Both Peter and Barnabas looked at Evander as if on cue. Leander followed them. Everyone knows that Evander might be the reason.
"Why are you looking at me?" Evander waved his hand. "Let me see..." he looked at the picture on the table. "I don’t even know this guy!" he shrugged. "Why am I getting blamed?"
"You never wanted to do business with the Vitale family?" Leander asked. He didn’t think that his brother was telling the truth.
"Vitale family?" Evander raised his brows. There was panic in his eyes for a second before he waved it off. "Why are we worrying about that woman?" he scoffed. "If they ruin her, get you another woman. It’s not like~"
Before he finished, Peter banged the table. His eyebrows were twitching with anger. "If some outsider touches a woman of our family, it’s such a humiliation... our ancestors will roll in their graves! This is not how we do things in the family."
Leander released his fists. If his grandfather didn’t interject Evander, he would be picking his teeth from the ground by now.
"But, grandpa..." Evander tried to explain but stopped seeing his grandfather’s unimpressed face. "I tried to contact the Vitale family. But I didn’t...I didn’t even get any reply. I don’t know why that woman is targeted. I really don’t!"
"You didn’t want to get the drugs for your brothels by going behind the backs of the Waldorf family?" Leander asked.
His voice was calm although his heart was fuming like a volcano. His family has been doing the two businesses that he didn’t agree to be part of. He shouldn’t be feeling humiliated, but that’s what he felt.
"What?" Evander’s lips twitched.
Leander didn’t mind him and looked at his grandfather. "I was going to talk to you about that now that you are the one who will take on my mantle," Peter said casually and took a sip of water. "Evander was right that those are the high-earning businesses these days. He even has a new proposal. Listen to him."
Leander pressed his lips. His grandfather is not going to listen to him, it seems. He even wants to expand those abominable businesses. He wanted to speak and all the words that he came up with would be highly inappropriate for a grandson to say to his grandfather much less to the don.
He put his hands inside his suit pocket where he had the little lemon his wife gifted him. That little lemon when held by his fingers calmed him down.
He understood. The Kastello family is not the one controlling everything. There are other families, and they will have to get along for sharing their profits and to avoid a greater war like the one that took his father’s life.
The Kastello family alone cannot do anything. The Palatini family must be the ones behind this.
Evander stared at Leander tilting his head and rubbing his chin. "Is that what your boy toy complained you about? He thinks I am going behind his family? You’re something, Leander. Having your wife and your boytoy under one roof. You must be~"
"Your birthday is coming up in a couple of days, right?" Barnabas asked mainly to shut Evander’s stupid mouth. He always knew that Evander is the Fredo of the family, but still... he’s being too much these days.
Does he really want to provoke Leander?
Leander cleared his throat saying nothing else. What’s so special about one’s birthday when they’re in their thirties? He’s already gotten the perfect birthday celebration when his wife gave him gifts!
"Bring your wife for a dinner on your birthday," Peter said.
"But the family always celebrates my birthday a day before," Leander said with indifference.
He didn’t know why. His mother won’t look at him on his actual birthday and his grandfather insisted on celebrating his birthday a day earlier. He never said a word about it before. But he didn’t want to bring his wife here after what happened on their wedding night.
His grandfather must remember his words then. Why is he putting him on a spot?
"This year, I’m celebrating it with my wife, if you don’t mind, grandpa," he bowed. "I’ll have dinner with you all in a week. About the Vitale issue?" He asked as he wanted to know how his grandfather is planning on handling it.
"Let’s see...I’ll have people ask around..." Peter’s eyes unconsciously ended up on Evander. Leander could see that Peter doubts Evander as much as he does.
"Okay, I’ll..." Leander looked at his watch. "I’ll be off," he said and walked out.
Peter sighed as Leander left the room. He glared at Evander. "I didn’t do anything!" Evander insisted and ran to the door.
Barnabas watched Evander leaving. "Did he go to the Vitale family to get back at Leander?" Barnabas asked.
Peter coughed in his fists. He wanted to say that can’t be the case but he couldn’t be sure of it himself.
"Find out what this is about... And that girl... she’s...tricky..." Peter sighed. His aged face fell as he looked at the black glass paper weight on the table. "I don’t have a good feeling about her."
Barnabas nodded. He might have laughed, but he is not a fan of tricky women. And with Leander surrendering to her, what if she turns dangerous for them? Her record is not very good.
Peter stared at the picture on his table for some time in deep thoughts.
"Find out if the Vitale family is onto her. And if...if we are in danger, kill her before the Vitale family could get to her," Peter said.
