Chapter 136: The Lion and The Dark Cage
"You can’t be here. This is a women’s restroom," Viviana said pointing at the door.
But that man didn’t care. With an amused smirk embellishing his devilish face, he walked toward her with his hand inside his trouser.
"You should be more careful, Mousy," he whispered in her ear.
Viviana could only snort. "Martha should have been here," she said.
And as she said it, she realized that it was an excuse and it still meant that she should have been careful. He was right. She shouldn’t expect that she would be safe just because she is in a "women only" place.
Bad people tend to not follow the laws or societal rules.
And when she came out of the stall, she didn’t even look for Martha. If it was an actual dangerous situation, Martha would have been hurt or dragged out. That should have been the first sign but she missed it.
Flash of that fedora guy popped in her memory. Something about that guy made her alarm bells ring.
"You’re right," she said and turned to face the mirror.
Standing behind her with his hand still in his pocket, he stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes met with his on the mirror. Viviana closed the powder case as she could sense that he was bewildered about something.
"What?" she asked.
He furrowed his brows and grunted. He didn’t expect her to ever say that he was right. If she is telling him that she would be careful, then that means that she truly is not trying to off herself anymore.
The entire visit was a little test he had for her. OF course, letting her go out was the main objective, and he had a secondary objective too. He didn’t send his men with her to test her. He wanted to see how she is acting in his absence with leeway to get away from him.
She is not utilizing the hole in the fence to her advantage. He knows he won’t succeed if she tries, but she never tried. And now, it appears that he could trust her with her outings too.
She didn’t even try to escape. That was a relief. A great relief.
But there still is a chance that she is playing the long game to gain his trust and let him lose his guard for her to strike—one deathly strike that will take him out.
Looking at her with her short hair, he remembered that girl that visits him in his nightmares these days singing the same song over and over. Not the woman who haunts him, but the girl who saves him. The smile on her face when she holds out her hands for him... He wanted to rest on her shoulders one day. Even in his dreams he could never reach her because he wakes up before that.
He wakes up in HER embrace.
He sighed.
He is turning pathetic. Why is he even holding on to her like this?
But why is she turning more and more into that girl in his dreams. Is he losing the plot? Is he turning crazy? Is she drugging him without him knowing?
Viviana didn’t know what he was thinking. His face looked calm. But he might be a fuming volcano inside. She knew that he already knows what happened to his ex-fiancée. He will blame her.
And Celine... what happened to her? Is Martha with her?
She kept her powder box inside her purse. When she was least expecting it, she felt something land on her shoulder. She looked at the mirror to see that giant of a man both in height and status, bowing to rest his forehead on her shoulder. His hands that were warm rested on her abdomen.
Viviana didn’t know what to do. She stood still. His deep voice vibrated in her ears as his warm breath tickled her exposed skin.
"There is a wasteland... the wilderness, you could say, like the Savanna...There lived a ...lives a lion. The lion is so dangerous, so it is not let free. The owner of the lion trapped it in a dark cage for his safety and for the safety of his loved ones. In that wilderness, the lion stays in a dark cave that was essentially its cage, waiting for its master to let it out..."
"Hmm..." Viviana hummed acknowledging that she is listening to him.
If she wanted to speak her heart, she would say that the owner of the lion did good in caging that dangerous lion. But she had a feeling that it is not some story. Why would one lion speak of another lion out of nowhere?
Maybe this is his story.
And when she changed her perspective that way, her feeling changed too.
"It must be incredibly lonely for the lion," she said.
Oddly, this was true too. How can she have two contradicting feelings about the same incident? The owner is right. And she felt bad for the lion. But that is life. Everyone’s a hero in their own story.
He looked into the mirror resting his chin on her shoulder. His eyes were wide probably because he too didn’t expect this answer from her.
"It is..." he whispered. His hoarse voice melted to the sound of the air conditioner.
"All the lion knows is darkness when he is caged. And when he is let out, he sees this empty land in front of him devoid of any life or beauty, and only preys. He devours the prey and drinks the blood for that’s all he knew... That’s all he has. He is happy, he thought. He is content. That is enough for his life... The darkness, and nothingness that gives him blood to drink...Until..."
Viviana gulped. Is this how he truly feels? He is the owner, and he is the lion. There is a beast inside him that he lets out when he wants to.
Honestly speaking, it’s not odd to have another persona that is kept under guard. People do that. No one always does what they want to do. They keep their demons at bay.
But not everyone is a murderer.
And some turn to one. Like her. She tried to keep her demons at bay, but she couldn’t. In the end, she stained her hands with blood. And she is paying handsomely for it.
Who is she to blame him?
At least, he has a dark cave and a wilderness where he can play when he wants to.
What does she have?
Nothing... No one...
And this is exactly what she deserves.
