Chapter 130: Salon Visit(1)
She tried to choose what dress to wear and only then she realized the most important thing.
How will she pay?
She has no cash in hand and Leander didn’t leave her anything. All she has is $90, and it won’t be enough for the salon she used to visit. She didn’t think that Leander would be pleased if she visits her old salon.
She decided not to visit the salon that day. She came downstairs. She had gotten used to watching the rerun of a dating show in the mornings. She informed the chauffeur that she changed her mind and went back to the living room.
Mary came from the kitchen hearing the TV. She asked why she is not getting ready. Viviana had no shame explaining that she didn’t have the money. Mary sighed.
"You are Minerva Kastello! Why do you need money?" Mary asked.
It was then it hit Viviana. Mafia families tend to not pay for stuff. They collect money from businesses on their "turf", not pay them. That’s their whole thing.
But she would feel ashamed to get one-sided benefits.
As she tried to explain it to Mary, the phone rang.
"It must be for you," Mary smiled rather teasingly.
Viviana too knew it would be for her. Only Leander calls this number and he calls this number only for her. It’s her personal phone, well, except it was not private, and she cannot carry it around like a mobile phone.
She didn’t mind. She doesn’t need a smartphone. She has sh*tty television dramas to pass her time on.
Mary with a teasing giggle left the living room as Viviana answered the phone.
"You’re not going today?" Leander asked the moment the call connected.
"Uh...Yes," she said.
That was a fast transmission of the news.
"Why? Are you feeling sick? Should I call for the doctor?" he stacked the questions.
"No, no..." Viviana refused. Why does he sound nervous? "It’s... I don’t have money. I’m not going without money," she told the truth.
She’s never going to use the Kastello name to extort others.
She heard a deep sigh from the other end. His side was calm probably because he was still inside the car. His car is extremely soundproof.
"There’s this international franchise salon the upper-class ladies are raving about. How long will it take for you to finish?" He asked.
Viviana never thought she’d hear words like "raving" from Leander’s mouth. "At least a couple of hours to three hours...I’m planning on cutting my hair and coloring it simply," she said.
"Cut?" he asked. He did not sound pleased.
"Yeah... My hair feels like straw. I don’t want to have it long anymore...I’ll..." she too was not pleased about it. But rather than feel sad each time she feels her hair, she’d rather cut it short and wait for it to grow back. "It’s just hair. It’ll grow back..."
Leander didn’t say anything for some time.
"Should I get ready then?" she asked. "This salon... should I fix an appointment?"
Even in her wildest dreams, she hasn’t imagined talking about fixing appointments at hair salons with her husband and her husband being Leander "The Lion" Kastello. What a life she had led!
"No. Just go. I’ll be there when you finish," he said.
And she was in for another shock. Leander Kastello waiting for her in a hair salon? Has the world gone cube?
Ah... he’s building up his image as that of the henpecked lion for some reason...
She could only sigh. But when she thought about Leander waiting in the waiting area for her, she smiled. She never had people waiting for her mostly because she went everywhere alone.
It would be nice to have someone to return to.
She thought he would end the call. But he didn’t. Placing the receiver in her ear, she listened to hear the click.
"What?" he asked. His tone was gentle.
"Nothing. You want to say anything more?" she asked.
Silence.
"Whom are you bringing with you?" he asked. But before she answered, he continued. "Bring the brunette. She’s more sensible," he said.
"Okay, I’ll bring Martha," Viviana answered.
She waited for him to end the call, but he didn’t. So, she waited. She waited until her hand hurt.
"You’re not ending the call?" she asked.
"You end it," he said.
"Okay," Viviana said and ended the call.
With a skip to her step, she went to the kitchen to inform Martha.
-----
Leander stared at his phone. He didn’t want to end the call. He wanted to hear her voice more. Just because he told her to end the call, she did without any hesitation. Couldn’t she have talked to him more?
He sighed.
He was not surprised that she didn’t want to get free haircuts. What can he do? He married one of "them". She’ll think like "them".
"Steve, call Martha(?) and tell her to be careful. No mishaps this time," he said. Steve immediately got to it.
Leander did not like that she decided to cut her hair. She might say that she doesn’t like the feeling of her hair. But how much does his previous mishap play a part? He shouldn’t have lost his temper and pulled her hair that day. She must have been waiting for this chance.
He hoped that she doesn’t cut it too short to not enable him to grab her hair. He likes her hair.
"Is the dog inoculated?" he asked Steve.
He’s not that oblivious. He knew that one of the kitchen maids feeds a stray dog and that dog enters the compound through a hole in the fence. But he let that be.
That dog is smart and guarded that side of his property out of instinct and with sincerity. So, he let it be.
And now, he found that his wife who is terrified of his little plush cats gets along so perfectly with a mean-looking rottweiler dog. If it stands with its hind legs, it would be taller than her. And she is not afraid of that dog many fears.
If she’s not scared of it, she can have fun with the dog.
"They caught the dog and got it to a vet. The vet said that although dirty, the dog is pretty strong and healthy. And yes, it is vaccinated and groomed. Also, the vet said that the dog is pregnant and will give birth in approximately five weeks," Steve gave all the details.
"Pregnant..." Leander mumbled and looked out the window.
He didn’t know why he had a sinking feeling in his heart.
