Chapter 110: Solace In Nostalgia
As he came to know the truth that his grandfather was the one responsible for the death of her parents, and he was just the one who helped in the cover-up, he found himself in a mysterious emotion.
It was not mysterious; he was relieved. Relieved to know he didn’t cause her parents’ death.
But there was no reason for him to be relieved about it. She still hated him for the cover-up. She still sees him as her enemy.
He made sure of it by scaring her.
Leander didn’t want to go home. Then he will have to look at her.
He asked the car to stop at the side of the road. It was the first time he had felt that he didn’t belong anywhere. Till now, he had his grandfather.
But now... Whom can he trust?
It was not a good feeling.
He never felt the love of his mother. His brother and he never shared a friendly relationship. They pretended to get along in front of others. But he remembered the warmth of his father and his grandfather was always there to guide him.
He thought that it was enough. His grandfather trusted him with everything; that was the foundation on which he built his life.
But now he had learned that his grandfather never trusted him as much as he believed him to trust him.
’You’re the doormat...’
He remembered her words.
Was he really used as a doormat?
He asked the driver to take a cab home and drove the car away. He just drove on the almost empty road with no destination in his mind. It’s been a while since he drove anywhere. He was always driven.
But he needed a change. He just needed to take her words out of his brain. He cannot let the words of a woman who hates him. His grandfather might put his way of doing things ahead of his trust for him, but his grandfather loves him.
That snake of a woman separated him from his friend and is now trying to separate him from his family. That was always her plan. He will not let her win.
She and her magnificently brilliant eyes tell him stories that make him long for something he misses... He cannot be swayed by her anymore!
Yes, he cannot let that snake win!
When he came to that realization, he was already by the sea and the sky was turning bright. It was almost sunrise. He parked his car in the rest area and walked along the rocky beach. His head was hurting so much and he sat on the rock watching the sky. It’s the western coast and he won’t be able to witness the sun rising from the horizon.
Leaning on the rock, listening to the sound of waves crashing, he watched the stillness around him. He’s never been to the beach before. He wanted to but he didn’t know what he could do there. He doesn’t even know how to swim. Lionel would ask him to go with him to the beach just to watch the waves. He’d say that it’s an experience; whatever that meant!
But now he could understand.
Nothing was still, and yet it felt still. The repeating sounds of the crashing waves acted as a lullaby and the hard rock pressing on his back felt like a gentle embrace of a mother.
He felt nostalgic as if he lived this way all his life. He found solace like nowhere else.
Before he knew it, he fell asleep.
And even in his peaceful dreams, he could hear the waves crashing on the rocks. And in his dreams, he was running in some rocky tunnel. He was wearing his shoes and yet he could feel the rough terrain on his feet. He was happy; he was laughing. And more importantly, he was not alone.
There was someone else running with him, whose laughter was so intoxicating as it echoed in the rocky cave.
He turned to his side to see the one who brings so much joy to his existence. Everything around him turned golden and shimmery. The golden rays of the sun fell on the girl in front of him.
They were now standing inside some cave. The girl in front of him with short, dark, wavy hair that barely touched her shoulders. Even as the sun lit up everything to glitter, her eyes were dark as a powerful black hole. Even then, rather than giving him fear, her eyes gave him the urge to sink in her eyes and merge with her for all eternity.
Maybe it was her smile that was so bright and filled with...love. The love he had never felt with anyone else before. A new version of love he’s known till then.
’My Leo...’
She spoke. Her childish words invoked a strong feeling that rose from his gut. Uncontrollable. And yet he wanted to hold on to that feeling and not let go.
Flashes of her face... sounds of her laughter... the silence when she stared at the sky... that pout when she said ’My Leo is Michael’!
Ah, he wanted to hug her and not let her go.
And then everything changed... They were standing on the sandy shore of a beach. How pretty her smile was. He wanted to live with her forever.
It became windy. Her short dark hair messily waved around and fell on her face as she extended her hands. With the same smile, she said,
’I’m Jophiel!’
Dark.... Everything turned dark...His heart started pounding as it braced for something bad to follow.
And then there was light, a blinding light, followed by pain... The pain was so great that he couldn’t breathe.
The same girl was now floating in the sky, with her hands extended to him. And then the sun came back, illuminating her again.
He closed his eyes unable to bear seeing the light. And when he opened his eyes, she was gone taking the light with her.
Before he could figure out what was going on, there came another blinding light. He could hear his heart beating in his ears. Everything was windy and he could feel the hem of his long coat fluttering and patting his legs. The salty breeze had now turned to the metallic scent of blood.
