Chapter 284: Stunned
"Shit! What the hell is that?" Samuel muttered with horror etched across his face as the enormous eye emerged from the ground beneath them.
The eye, roughly ten meters in diameter, was encased in a writhing mass of black flesh interwoven with pulsing green vines. It was different from the last anomaly they had faced, which had been veined with red. Though, only Clyde who ever saw that creature directly.
This creature was larger, more scarier, and undeniably stronger.
Clyde’s grip tightened on the hilt of his Elderglass Sword. The air around filled with with grean and black oppressive energy that made it difficult to breathe.
He swallowed hard, his instincts screaming that this creature was much stronger anomaly than before.
"This one’s different," he muttered under his breath. Clyde’s eyes narrowed as the creature moved, the pulsing vines contracting like muscles preparing to strike.
"Get back!" Clyde shouted. "Get as far away as possible! I’ll handle this!"
Samuel hesitated, his spear glowing faintly in his hand. "Clyde, you-"
"Move!" Clyde bellowed, cutting him off.
But the creature wasn’t about to let its prey escape. From the ground, more tentacles erupted, each thicker and more grotesque than the last.
Not like the earlier appendages these were lined with suction cups that glowed with the same sickly green energy as the vines around the eye.
The tentacles lashed out at the three of them at once with terrifying speed, targeting Clyde, Samuel, and Leyan with precise attack.
Clyde jumped to the side as one tentacle slammed into the ground where he had just been standing, sending a cloud of sand and debris flying into the air.
The force of the impact was enough to crack the floating platform beneath his feet, causing it to tilt dangerously.
Another tentacle snaked toward Samuel, who thrust his spear forward with a shout, releasing a burst of magical energy that scorched the fleshy appendage. The tentacle recoiled briefly, but its glow only intensified as if it fed on the energy it absorbed.
"Damn it!" Samuel cursed, leaping backward to avoid another strike. Leyan jumped and run toward the other side of his friend with panicked expression.
Clyde’s eyes darted between the creature’s massive eye and the writhing tentacles. The anomaly’s eyes was clearly its weakness, but reaching it would be no easy feat with the relentless appendages guarding it.
He sprang into action, dashing toward the nearest tentacle. His Elderglass Sword flashed with blue and white light as he activated his [Pure Lightning] skill and brought it down in a sweeping arc, severing the limb cleanly.
Black-green ichor sprayed across the sand, hissing as it dissolved into smoke.
Another tentacle whipped toward him from the side. Clyde spin his body narrowly avoiding the attack and immediately countered with a quick slash, his blade cutting through the fleshy mass.
"Samuel, Leyan! keep moving!" Clyde yelled as the ground beneath them quaked violently. More tentacles erupted from the earth, the creature determined to overwhelm them.
Above, from a relevantly safe distance, Leyan continued his barrage, his arrows flying through the air and attacking the tentacles with pinpoint accuracy.
Each shot forced the writhing limbs to recoil, buying Clyde precious moments to advance.
"ROAR!"
Suddenly, a roar coming from the creature. It was not just a sound but also a huge wave of energy that move outward like a shockwave. The force of it was overwhelming.
Leyan was thrown off balance and rolling uncontrollably across the sandy ground before colliding with a jagged piece of floating rock. The impact knocked the breath from his lungs and he grimaced, clutching his ribs.
Samuel was hurled backward as well, but his quick reflexes saved him. He drove his spear into the ground with both hands, the weapon anchoring him as he skidded across the sand. It left deep furrow in the earth, but it stopped him from being flung too far.
Clyde, however, stood his ground. He managed to planting his feet firmly and braced himself against the invisible tide of energy.
His teeth clenched as the sheer pressure threatened to overwhelm him, but he didn’t thrown like Samuel and Leyna.
His black coat billowed wildly behind him and the Elderglass Sword in his hand crackling with his magic power.
The enormous eye now fully focused on Clyde because it seemed to aware of his strength. The anomaly had marked him as its greatest threat.
Without warning, three massive tentacles surged toward him. Each moved with terrifying speed, their glowing suction cups pulsating.
Clyde’s body surged with power as blue and white lightning arced across him, merging with the shimmering blade of his sword. He bent his knees slightly preparing to meet the attack and cut those tentacles.
But then, a voice came.
Strange voice came, it echoing in a way that felt more like a vibration in his chest than sound in his ears.
"The... burning... world..."
The words struck him like a hammer to his soul. A crushing weight settled in his chest and for a brief moment, Clyde faltered. His knees buckled under the sudden pressure and his vision blurred as the cryptic phrase echoed in his mind.
"What the hell...?" Clyde muttered.
That hesitation was all the creature needed. One of the tentacles slammed into him with incredible force, hitting his side and sending him hurtling across the battlefield.
Clyde’s body tumbled through the air before crashing into a floating ground, skidding across the sand in a trail of sparks and dust. His sword slipped from his grasp, embedding itself in the ground several feet away.
"Clyde!" Samuel’s voice rang out.
"ROAR!"
The anomaly roared again, its massive eye pulsating with brighter green light as more tentacles emerged, writhing for their prey.
Clyde gritted his teeth, his hand reaching out toward his sword. Lightning flickered faintly around him as he forced himself to his feet.
"Shit... that fucker hit me after stunning me with that strange voice," he growled with gritted teeth.
Above, Leyan finally managed to stand, his bow glowing with energy as he took aim at the nearest tentacle. He aimed and loosing a radiant arrow that struck at the tentacle.
Samuel rallying his strength and lifted his spear and charged back into the fray.
Clyde’s hand gripped the hilt of his sword, and as he pulled it free from the earth, the lightning surrounding him flared brighter.
The cryptic words still echoed in his mind, but he shoved them aside for now and focusing on killing the creature first.
The blue and white lightning emerged, and Clyde charged toward the eye with his full speed.
