Chapter 38: I’m So Afraid She Will Really Take You Away
Chapter 38: Chapter 38: I’m So Afraid She Will Really Take You Away
Yolanda Greenwood was taken aback and her first reaction was disbelief.
"The hospital’s blood bank is out of blood? Why do you need to donate?"
"You have ’panda’ blood, do you understand ’panda’ blood?"
Eliana Reed felt a secret sense of triumph: Melissa was indeed clever.
"Fine." Yolanda felt awkward and fell silent for a while before asking again, "By the way, how is Eldest Aunt? I think I saw her just before I fainted."
"Of course she went back; she’s not well herself, and with your cousin there, try not to bother them," Eliana warned.
"Understood." Yolanda didn’t think much of it.
They remained silent until the police arrived.
"Who called the police?"
"I did." Yolanda instinctively glanced at Eliana Reed.
"Officer, there might have been a misunderstanding here; we’d like to withdraw the report."
Eliana stood up and offered an apologetic smile.
The officer frowned, "What’s really going on here? And who are you?"
"I am his mother," Eliana pointed to the person on the hospital bed, "she was a bit... overwhelmed."
"Officer, I want to report a crime," Yolanda interrupted Eliana, "Someone slit my wrists while I was unconscious, almost killing me."
"What do you mean someone cut you? It was you!"
Eliana gestured for the officer to step outside the hospital room.
Yolanda became anxious, "Officer, I’m the one filing the report. You can’t trust what my mom says."
The officer was confused and looked at both of them, "What exactly happened?"
"You tell me," he said, pointing at Yolanda.
Yolanda then told the officer everything about what happened that night, in detail.
"Miss Greenwood, you’re saying your mom hired two men to knock you out and brought you back home? Then when you woke up, you were in the hospital, having found your wrists slashed?"
Yolanda nodded her head.
The officer looked puzzled, "So you suspect your mom staged your suicide and then brought you to the hospital..."
Eliana quickly added, "I donated blood to her just yesterday."
The officer immediately turned towards Yolanda, and seeing that Yolanda didn’t deny it, he was even more incredulous.
He looked at Eliana Reed and then pointed at his own head, indicating confusion.
"Ah!" Eliana sighed and lowered her voice, "My daughter has been going through a divorce lately."
The officer suddenly had an enlightened expression.
"Officer, everything I’m telling you is the truth. I’ve never thought of suicide; I..."
Yolanda was cut off mid-sentence when she saw Cooper Coldson appear at the door.
The outcome was now clear; no matter what she said, it wouldn’t matter.
"Alright, I’ve got a sense of your situation. Just sign here."
The officer handed over the statement for her to sign.
Hesitating for a moment, Yolanda signed it anyhow.
"Officer, let me show you out," Eliana offered, escorting the police officer out.
She saw Cooper at the door, "Cooper, why are you here?"
Cooper glanced at Yolanda. He had overheard that she never intended to kill herself, and so... it was all just another farce.
Using her life and future to cause drama, Yolanda’s mindset was truly concerning.
"I’d like to talk to Yolanda," he said slowly.
"Ah?" Eliana hesitated, "Yolanda might not be up to it right now, perhaps you could..."
"It’s fine, I want to speak with her alone."
Cooper’s tone left no room for doubt.
"Alright." Eliana left with the officer.
Cooper closed the door of the room.
Yolanda was exhausted.
She didn’t understand why Eliana would do this—
To kill her?
Then why take her to the hospital?
To prevent her from dying?
She lay back tiredly, gazing out the window.
Unbeknownst to her, the season had already shifted to autumn.
With Gray City by the sea, the autumn temperatures were not low, but the wind was unusually strong. Calming down now, she could hear it howling in fits and starts.
"The same trick, still not tired of it?"
Cooper finally spoke, his voice was filled with suppressed anger.
The same trick?
Yolanda didn’t quite understand and turned to look at him, "What do you mean?"
"Yolanda, why do you always treat people like fools?"
Two years ago, during their breakup, Yolanda had also cut her wrists.
That was the first time Cooper saw that much blood and ever since then, he developed hemophobia.
If he hadn’t heard what Eliana said and knew that Yolanda had faked the blood to scare him, he would have considered not breaking up.
A manipulative woman is always manipulative.
"Yolanda, playing mind games only ends up harming yourself."
Reminder of what the doctor had said, a trace of pity flashed in Cooper’s eyes.
The more Yolanda listened, the more baffled she became, "Do you think I cut my wrists on purpose, to avoid divorce?"
Cooper’s silence was a tacit acknowledgment.
"Ha..." Yolanda laughed bitterly, "Cooper, you really think too highly of yourself. I don’t love you to the point of death."
She weakly raised her right hand, "I’ve never considered suicide, nor would I ever do it for you."
This statement, strangely, infuriated Cooper even more.
"Of course, you never intended to actually kill yourself, it was just a performance."
"Just like two years ago."
"Yolanda, you truly disgust me."
"What did you say?" Yolanda was shocked.
Two years ago?
Was that when she was a senior?
She urgently confirmed, "Cooper, clarify what you mean, what happened two years ago?"
However, at that moment, Melissa Greenwood walked in.
"Cooper, what are you doing here?" She pulled Cooper to leave, "Yolanda is emotionally unstable right now, let’s discuss anything else after she’s feeling better."
"Cooper, don’t leave, make it clear, what exactly happened two years ago?" Yolanda was equally anxious.
Cooper found it odd, Yolanda’s reaction... didn’t seem feigned.
He turned his head, about to say he wanted to talk more with Yolanda, but then he saw Melissa holding something in her hand.
"Cooper," Melissa’s eyes were red, "come out, I need to speak with you."
"Cooper, don’t go, clarify it!" Yolanda wanted to argue one last time.
She hoped that at least once, she could win Cooper back from Melissa.
"Cooper!" Melissa’s tears fell, "I won’t take much of your time."
"Alright." In the end, Cooper conceded.
Watching the two leave together, tears quietly breached Yolanda’s defenses.
So, in Cooper’s heart, even if she almost died, she couldn’t compare to a single tear from Melissa.
As they stepped out of the hospital room, Melissa handed over the object she was holding.
It was an emerald-green, crescent-shaped Jade Pendant.
"Cooper, I’ve thought it over, and I think it’s best to return this pendant to you. Consider the words you said unheard, and the words I heard unspoken. Once my mom gets better, I’ll go abroad and never come back."
"Melissa!" Cooper refused to take the Jade Pendant, "Why don’t you trust me? I will definitely divorce Yolanda and marry you, that won’t change."
"But..." Melissa cried even harder, "You obviously care about her, you have so much to say to her..."
She trembled as she hugged Cooper’s waist, "Cooper, I’m so afraid, afraid that she’ll really take you away."
