Chapter 378: Chapter 378 Don’t Shift All the Blame to Ella
"Let me go in to look at Ella first; I’ll come right out, and we can talk." Yolanda Greenwood was extremely worried. She brushed aside Elsie Adams’ hand and entered the hospital room first.
"Ella?" As soon as she went in, her eyes turned red when she saw her precious daughter’s face covered with several band-aids, and there were more on her arms and legs. Her heart ached terribly. "Ella..."
She couldn’t even ask words like ’does it hurt?’ or ’are you scared?’ because she knew Little Ella felt no pain, and naturally, if there’s no pain, she wouldn’t be afraid, which is what makes it so dangerous.
In her memory, Ella always smiled and never cried or fussed. Everyone said she had given birth to a little angel, and she felt proud for that.
But when Little Ella was a little over one year old, her hand got scalded by hot water. At that time, Yolanda was in unbelievable pain on behalf of her daughter, yet found the child had no reaction whatsoever and only then realized something was amiss.
She and her husband took Little Ella to the hospital for tests. The doctor said Ella had congenital insensitivity to pain, caused by a genetic mutation, and she would never feel pain her entire lifetime; currently, there is no known cure worldwide.
Since the child couldn’t feel pain, she couldn’t foresee danger and didn’t know how to avoid it. In similar situations, other kids getting cut by a knife would know to be cautious next time and keep away, even if too young to remember. Their bodies would instinctively react.
But Little Ella won’t ever have such a reaction; she can only rely on her memory and judgment to avoid dangers.
The doctor said as Little Ella gradually grows up, the time before she understands things is the most dangerous; so during this period, while other children are getting to know various animals and foods, Little Ella has to learn about different hazards every day.
Other children, if injured, might heal in three to five days, but it would take Little Ella ten days, half a month, or even longer, because without the feeling of pain, she might accidentally reopen healed wounds multiple times, engaging in risky behaviors without knowing.
What Yolanda feared most was Little Ella getting hurt. But since Little Ella started kindergarten, she had already been injured twice. And this time was so severe; she really began to doubt whether she had made a mistake.
"Mom, it’s okay, don’t be sad." Little Ella clumsily tried to wipe Yolanda’s tears.
"Don’t move." Yolanda dared not let her move around, afraid she might reopen a wound. She wiped her tears and heard a voice at her leg, "I’m sorry."
The voice was small, and the pronunciation wasn’t very clear, as if he was saying the word for the first time.
Yolanda looked down and saw it was Little Gabriel.
The little guy suddenly burst into loud sobs, crying while admitting his mistake, "I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I didn’t take care of my sister properly, I’m sorry!"
"It’s not your fault, brother." Little Ella was flustered and hurriedly went to wipe Little Gabriel’s tears. "Brother, don’t cry, don’t cry..."
The little girl couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst into tears as well. She really didn’t feel pain, had no sensation, and wondered why Mom and Brother were crying. She didn’t want to see them cry, so she cried too in her hurry.
Yolanda saw the two children crying into a mess and quickly squatted down to comfort them one by one, "Gabriel, darling, it’s not your fault; you did well. Auntie thanks you. Can you stop crying, please? Look, when you cry, your sister cries too."
Little Gabriel opened his eyes wide, and indeed saw Little Ella crying too, so he hurriedly tried to stop his tears and went to wipe his sister’s tears, "Sister, don’t cry, sister, don’t cry."
"Brother doesn’t cry, then I won’t cry." Little Ella said through her tears, looking at Little Gabriel.
"Brother won’t cry, so sister shouldn’t cry either." Little Gabriel held back his tears, acting like a little man.
Indeed, when Little Ella saw this, she finally stopped crying too.
Yolanda breathed a sigh of relief, "Gabriel, watch over your sister; Auntie will step out for a moment, okay?"
"Okay, I will take good care of her." Little Gabriel secretly shouted to himself, Mom!
Yolanda patted the two little ones on their heads, then turned and left the hospital room, only to see Elsie Adams standing there with a somber expression.
Elsie Adams naturally heard Little Gabriel crying but didn’t go in because she knew she couldn’t comfort this child. The child was like a little devil, the most troublesome among all the young patients she treated.
Because Little Gabriel not only had autism but also like Little Ella, he had no pain perception, so that within his own world, he was almost invincible, fearing nothing and being indifferent to most things, even having very little affection for Cooper Coldson.
But just now, Yolanda managed to soothe him with a few words. It was clear he had feelings for Yolanda and Little Ella, which was truly annoying!
Elsie Adams felt miserable.
"What exactly happened? Why is Ella hurt so badly?" Yolanda’s tone was clearly questioning.
"You dare to ask me?" Elsie Adams had long prepared her words, "It’s because your Ella was being naive. She wanted to see a panda, but she was too short to see it, yet insisted I hold her. As a result, when I held her to look, she wasn’t behaving and fell."
"What?" Upon hearing that Little Ella fell, Yolanda’s face turned pale in shock, "How could this happen?"
"Ask your daughter!" Elsie Adams said in a detached manner.
"But... when Ella is at home, I repeatedly taught her that when I’m holding her, it means there are dangers around, and she must stay still in my arms," Yolanda didn’t believe Elsie Adams’ words. "She couldn’t possibly move recklessly in your arms, let alone move so much as to fall out of your arms."
"What do you mean by this?" Elsie Adams glared at her, "Are you insinuating that I threw her down?"
Yolanda’s expression changed slightly, "I certainly wouldn’t think so, it just might have been an accident for Ella to fall. I won’t hold Teacher Adams responsible, but please don’t blame a child."
Yolanda turned to go back.
"Stop right there!" Elsie Adams stopped her, becoming aggressive, "I’m telling you, don’t think your daughter is so clever. She’s not a normal child and doesn’t understand what danger is. Anything can happen. As her teacher, I regard the children’s safety more important than my life, so it’s Ella’s fault in this case."
Yolanda turned back to look at her, her face very unpleasant.
"If I were you, I’d arrange for Ella to withdraw from school immediately. She’s really not suitable to stay in kindergarten anymore, and I’m afraid to be her teacher again."
"Teacher Adams, why must you force Ella to leave kindergarten?" Yolanda turned around, stepping forward, "Ella has always been a well-behaved and sensible child. Never before has any adult disliked her, much less you as a preschool teacher. Why is that?"
"What do you mean? Who dislikes her?" Elsie Adams instinctively took a step back, "You’re overthinking it, besides this is my suggestion, decide for yourself."
She bypassed Yolanda and entered the hospital room, picking up Little Gabriel, "Gabriel, let’s go home!"
