Chapter 369: Chapter 369 Cooper Coldson, take a step forward
"Cooper Coldson." Yolanda Greenwood repeated the name to herself, almost as if talking to no one, and suddenly felt a sharp pain in her chest.
She quickly recalled that on the day she arrived in Gray City, she had seen a man being interviewed on a giant electronic screen, and that man had the same name.
Back then, the distance was too far for her to make out his features clearly. She only remembered his wheat-colored skin, his refined and gentlemanly demeanor, and now she saw he appeared to be a responsible and loving father.
Yolanda tugged at the corner of her mouth. "If I ever have the time, I really need to thank Mr. Coldson in person."
Elsie Adams was completely dumbstruck. It was obvious that Yolanda didn’t recognize Cooper Coldson. Had she made a mistake, or had Yolanda lost her memory?
Unfortunately, it was getting late. If she kept probing further, she might raise Yolanda’s suspicions.
"Sure, I’ll make the introductions if there’s an opportunity." She threw out a polite remark and stood up first. "It’s time for the afternoon classes, and I can’t just keep slacking off outside."
Yolanda smiled. "Teacher Adams, you’re really dedicated. Alright, let’s leave it at that for today. If there’s a chance, I’ll treat you to a meal."
"Alright, see you!" Elsie left with her mind buzzing.
Yolanda actually didn’t have any plans for the afternoon. After weighing her thoughts, she decided to go back to the exhibition site. Maybe she’d get lucky and meet that Sophie Taylor, the director.
Sure enough, she hadn’t waited long after returning when Sunny Skies brought good news.
"Our director just arrived. She’s in the back office. I’ll take you there." Sunny led Yolanda to the office.
When they reached the place, Sunny knocked on the door lightly before leading Yolanda inside. "Director Taylor, this is..."
Sunny hadn’t finished her sentence when Sophie suddenly stood up in shock, staring at the person at the door in disbelief. "You..."
Sunny glanced at Sophie and then turned back, whispering softly to Yolanda, "Do you... know our director?"
Yolanda shook her head blankly.
"Sunny, please leave us." Sophie tried to keep her emotions in check, not wanting to lose composure in front of her subordinate.
As soon as Sunny was gone, Sophie stepped forward quickly and hugged Yolanda tightly, choking up. "Yolanda, you... after all these years, where did you go? Do you have any idea..."
"You’re Director Taylor, right?" Yolanda interrupted her.
Sophie stared at her in disbelief. "Yolanda, you... You don’t remember me?"
Yolanda gave an apologetic smile and tugged at the corner of her mouth. "I had an accident a while ago and injured my head, so..."
"You’ve lost your memory?" Sophie was even more shocked and, upon reflection, realized, "It makes sense, it makes sense..."
So that’s why Yolanda was still alive, yet hadn’t cared about her own son for three years. It turned out she had lost her memory.
Yolanda hadn’t expected to run into someone she used to know so soon. It was true that three years ago, she’d been in a car accident. When she woke up, she’d forgotten everything from her past. Thankfully, her father, husband, and Lola Gold had been there to tell her about some things.
She knew she had lived in Gray City for a while before, so coming back, she also anticipated meeting some familiar faces.
Curious, she asked Sophie, "Were we very close before?"
"Well..." Sophie wiped her tears. From her perspective, Yolanda had once been her leader, her mentor, her friend—someone very important to her. But to Yolanda, Sophie might have just been a subordinate.
She tugged at the corner of her mouth. "Pretty close. We worked at the same company before—you were my boss."
"Really?" Yolanda looked slightly surprised.
"Come on, let’s sit and talk." Sophie pulled Yolanda into a seat and asked with concern, "Where have you been all these years? Is Ella doing okay?"
"I’ve been with my husband..."
"Husband?" Sophie’s eyes widened in shock. "You... You’re married?"
Yolanda furrowed her brow in confusion. "I married my husband before Ella was born. Since you know Ella, why weren’t you aware I was married?"
"..." Sophie instantly understood. Someone had wanted Yolanda to forget everything that had happened in Gray City, so they had fed her a completely different version of her life.
What should she do?
Cooper Coldson had been searching for Yolanda all these years. Sophie could tell that he loved Yolanda deeply. But why... why did Yolanda jump into the ocean back then? If life hadn’t already been utterly desperate, how could someone as strong as Yolanda do something like that?
Sophie made a quick decision. "It’s my mistake. Back when we worked together, you were very firm about staying single. Later, I heard you had a daughter named Ella, so naturally, I figured you’d gotten married."
She hurriedly changed the topic. "How is Ella? She must be three now, right?"
"Fine, she’s doing great." Yolanda looked at Sophie skeptically, sensing that her reactions earlier had been strange.
The two chatted for a while longer, but Sophie noticeably became cautious in her words, fearing she might say something wrong that would arouse Yolanda’s suspicions.
After about half an hour, Sophie stood up to see Yolanda out. "Yolanda, it’s so great to see you again. I still have things to take care of today, so let’s end here for now. Next time, let’s have a meal together."
"Alright, I won’t take up more of your time then." Yolanda left the exhibition site feeling full of questions.
Not more than ten minutes after she left, Cooper Coldson arrived.
He went straight to find Sophie. "Where’s that designer you mentioned?"
Earlier, Sophie had told Cooper that she’d discovered a designer whose style strongly resembled Yolanda’s. The moment Cooper heard this, he insisted on coming to see for himself. Although Sophie felt it wasn’t necessary, Cooper had been adamant.
"She’s already gone." Sophie tried her best to look unaffected. "President Coldson, you’re overthinking it. She’s not Yolanda."
"You’ve met her already?" Cooper seemed so accustomed to disappointment by now that his reaction was almost indifferent.
"Yes." Sophie nodded. "But her design style really does resemble Yolanda’s. If you’re still interested in developing that island-inspired jewelry line, I can ask her to collaborate."
"No need." Cooper rejected the suggestion outright. "No matter how similar she may be to Yolanda, if she’s not her, I don’t want it."
He prepared to leave. "Then I’ll be heading back. Wishing you success with the exhibition."
"You’re not attending?" Sophie caught up to him. "I was just about to leave too. Let me escort you."
Cooper gave a polite smile. "I probably won’t have time. But don’t worry, if there’s anything you need, you can contact Richard Reyes. He’ll give you his full support."
Over the years, Coldson Group had never refused a request nor charged a single cent for supporting such exhibitions.
In fact, if it weren’t for Cooper, Sophie likely wouldn’t have risen to her director position so quickly.
She hesitated before cautiously speaking up, "President Coldson, I know I don’t have the standing to say this, but... you’ve helped me so much, intentionally or not, and I really look up to you as a friend."
Cooper seemed to realize what she wanted to say, and his steps quickened.
Sophie stopped where she stood. "President Coldson, stop organizing these exhibitions. Stop searching too. It’s been three years. Even if Yolanda is still alive, she must have a new life by now."
"Cooper, you can’t stay trapped in the past. Take a step forward!"
