Chapter 358: Chapter 358 He is a Relative of My Ex-Boyfriend
Lola Gold sneered, "In this world, there are indeed people who don’t even care about the cost of a meal."
"What do you mean?" Caleb Sullivan was visibly angrier. "Yes, I know the people you used to know in Gray City were all big-shot billionaires, far more sophisticated than me. I’m just a poor guy, but—"
"Caleb Sullivan!" Yolanda Greenwood promptly interrupted him, worried that if it continued, there’d be no stopping.
She forced a smile. "It’s my treat today. Can we all just give me, your host, a little face and stop bickering, okay?"
Little Ella nestled in Yolanda’s arms and timidly said, "Teacher said that arguing isn’t what good children do."
"Alright, let’s listen to Ella. Ella is the best little angel." Lola Gold glanced at Caleb Sullivan and reluctantly sat down again.
"No need for you to treat us. I’ll handle it. I can afford a meal at least." Caleb ordered a few dishes himself, without consulting Lola Gold.
The food soon arrived, and Caleb had clearly ordered quite a bit.
"This is too much. The three of us can’t eat all this." Yolanda Greenwood playfully jabbed Lola Gold. "Come on, dig in. Isn’t most of this stuff what you like to eat?"
Lola Gold glanced at the spread—it was indeed mostly her favorite dishes. Her anger subsided a bit immediately.
The meal, surprisingly, went fairly well. The two stopped arguing, with Little Ella keeping the mood lively. After the meal, everyone wore a smile on their face.
Yolanda Greenwood got up, ready to step out.
"Where are you going?" Lola Gold, knowing her too well, quickly grabbed her and gave Caleb Sullivan a meaningful look.
Caleb chuckled, "Alright, Yolanda, no way am I letting you pay the bill. I’ll cover it. You two start tidying up; I’ll go settle the bill first."
Lola Gold squinted at Yolanda Greenwood, "Let him go. Give him a chance to make up for it."
"Alright, then I’ll treat you next time." Yolanda didn’t insist.
She and Lola Gold tidied up and left the private room. But soon after, they heard Caleb Sullivan arguing once again.
Lola Gold’s expression was beyond sour. "So embarrassing. Yolanda, you and Ella wait outside for us."
"Okay, don’t get too upset. Try to figure out what’s going on." Yolanda Greenwood didn’t follow them, fearing any fallout might be worse if she did.
She carried Little Ella out the door and softly asked, "Are you scared when they argue, Ella?"
"A little." With no strangers around, Little Ella snuggled into Yolanda’s neck. "Godmother is really going to marry that uncle? Why are they fighting? You and Daddy never fight."
Yolanda stroked the little one’s head. "People interact differently with each other, sweetheart. Sometimes arguments are inevitable, as long as it doesn’t hurt the bond. Don’t be afraid; it’s okay."
Mother and daughter waited for a while outside before they finally saw Lola Gold and Caleb Sullivan emerge, one trailing far behind the other.
Lola Gold was fuming, storming ahead as if she couldn’t hold it in.
"Is it wrong for me not to want to spend someone else’s money?" Caleb followed behind, explaining over and over. "Especially money from your ex-boyfriend—that’s about a man’s dignity."
Lola Gold turned around, "How many times do I have to say it? He isn’t my ex-boyfriend!"
"Then who is he?" Caleb clearly didn’t believe her.
Lola Gold clenched her teeth. "I can’t explain it to you. Think whatever you want."
She walked up to Yolanda and said, "Let’s go, we’ll take a taxi home."
"But..." Yolanda hesitantly looked at Caleb.
"Let’s go. I have no desire to sit in the same car as this lunatic right now." Lola scooped up Little Ella and walked quickly to hail a cab.
Soon enough, a taxi pulled up.
Yolanda apologized with a smile to Caleb Sullivan. "Caleb, Lola has always been like this. Don’t be upset; I’ll talk to her later."
"Yolanda, I know I can’t compare to her ex-boyfriend in any way, but a man must keep his pride. I can’t just throw mine away." Caleb still looked deeply aggrieved.
"I understand, I understand. Alright, we better go now." Yolanda nodded apologetically and quickly got in the taxi.
The car drove off some distance before Lola Gold finally spoke, "I’m sorry, Yolanda. You just got back, and now I’ve made things unpleasant for you and Ella. I’m so sorry."
"It’s alright, Godmother. Don’t be upset." Little Ella softly kissed Lola Gold’s cheek.
Lola Gold’s eyes turned red instantly.
Yolanda sighed softly, "It’s fine with us. You need to think carefully. If you’re sure about marrying him, then you must fully cut ties with that other person, and if—"
Lola Gold said somewhat helplessly, "That man today really isn’t my ex-boyfriend."
"Then who—" Yolanda reflexively asked.
Lola Gold’s gaze flickered. "Forget it. Even though he isn’t my ex-boyfriend, he is family. This really is my fault."
"A man?" Yolanda frowned. "Then you should’ve explained to Caleb properly earlier. Why argue like that?"
"..." Lola Gold seemed to want to say something, but ultimately sighed. "Never mind, this one’s on me."
Yolanda felt something was off but chose not to press further. It just seemed like there might actually be some problems between Caleb Sullivan and Lola Gold.
Not long after, the car stopped at the entrance to the apartment complex, and the two got out.
Yolanda suddenly remembered something. "Oh no, the luggage is still in Caleb’s car."
"Don’t worry, I’ve got all my things with me. He’ll likely drop it off tomorrow anyway." Lola Gold seemed in better spirits now, carrying Little Ella and walking ahead. "Ella, we’re almost home! Excited?"
"Excited! Home at last!" The little one cheered.
Lola Gold lived in a small one-bedroom apartment. Clearly, she’d tidied up for Yolanda’s arrival, even placing a crib in the living room.
"You’ll have to put up with the space for a few days. Once I marry Caleb Sullivan, there’ll be more room for you and your daughter."
Yolanda forced a smile. "Actually, we could just stay at a hotel—"
"What? Are you looking down on my place for being small?" Lola Gold’s face immediately turned sour. "I know you’re a boss now, and you’re well-off, but you still shouldn’t waste money casually. Being your own boss means careful budgeting."
After Little Ella fell asleep, the two of them returned to the living room to talk.
"By the way, how long are you planning to stay this time?"
Yolanda thought for a moment. "At least a month, I’d say. I have two exhibits to attend and need to prepare thoroughly."
"Don’t worry; your work is definitely going to be great." Lola Gold said confidently, then asked, "Speaking of which, what about Little Ella during that time? You can’t bring her along to everything, can you?"
"I’ve lined up a kindergarten for her, and tomorrow we’ll check it out. If it works, she’ll stay there during the day and I’ll pick her up at night. If not, I’ll have to hire a postpartum doula to watch her during the day."
Lola Gold nodded thoughtfully before cautiously suggesting, "Actually... given Ella’s situation, it might be safer for her to stay at home."
"Yolanda," she grabbed Yolanda’s hand, "She doesn’t have to live like an ordinary child."
