Chapter 356: Chapter 356: You Guys Are Really Getting Married
Three years later, at Gray City International Airport, Yolanda Greenwood had just stepped off the plane holding Little Ella when her phone buzzed.
"Mom, your phone!" Little Gabriel called out cheerfully, "Pick it up, hurry!"
"Hold on a second!" Yolanda shook her head helplessly. While searching for the baggage claim, she found her phone and handed it to the little one in her arms.
"Hello?" Little Gabriel held the phone with his little hands and even used his finger to put it on speaker. "Hello? Dad? It’s Ella!"
From the other end of the line came a man’s deep laughter, clearly teasing the child deliberately. "Who? Who’s answering the phone?"
"Silly Dad, it’s Ella! It’s your little princess, Ella!" Little Ella clung to the phone, giggling excitedly.
"Oh, it’s Her Royal Highness, the Princess." The man patiently played along with the little one.
Yolanda finally spotted the baggage claim area and called out towards the phone, "Alright, you two—how childish are you?"
"Is it childish?" Little Ella looked at Yolanda seriously. "Mom, I’m only three. I’m not childish; Dad is the one who’s childish."
"Oh, you little traitor!" The man pretended to be mad.
"Hahaha..." Little Ella burst into laughter, her joy evident. Clearly, they had played this game many times before.
"Alright, I need to get the luggage. You two, stop playing now. Hanging up!" Yolanda moved as if she were about to set Little Ella down.
"Okay, everything safe and sound. I’ll come over to see you in a few days!" The man’s voice was noticeably reluctant, and he added over the phone, "Ella, give Dad a kiss!"
"Mua!" Little Ella kissed the phone intensely.
Yolanda took the phone back, wiping the slobber off in disdain, then pinched the little one’s nose. "Gross!"
"It’s not gross! Dad loves Ella’s slobbery kisses the most," Little Ella declared with pride.
Yolanda shook her head. "I can’t handle you two."
She pushed her luggage forward, continuing toward the exit. Just as she reached the arrivals area, she felt a shadow rushing toward her, almost knocking her over.
"Yolanda, my dearest Yolanda, you’re finally back!" It turned out to be Lola Gold.
"What is this? What are you doing?" Yolanda said with a mix of amusement and exasperation. "We haven’t seen each other for just a year and a half, and you’re acting all emotional?"
"Please!" Lola Gold looked annoyed. "You’re such a woman lacking in romance."
At this moment, a sweet, childish voice piped up from beside them, "Auntie Lola, Ella missed you so much."
"Oh, baby, I’m so sorry! You’re too tiny; Auntie didn’t see you just now." Lola Gold crouched down and scooped Little Ella into her arms. "I thought your jealous dad wouldn’t let you come back with Mom. Come, let Auntie give you a kiss!"
Saying that, she dramatically opened her mouth wide, pretending to plant a fierce kiss on the little one.
Yolanda gently pushed her away, shaking her head lightly.
"Ah, right. Our little princess must be treated delicately, with gentle kisses." Lola Gold leaned in and planted a soft kiss on Little Ella’s cheek. "So sweet! Our Ella truly is the Princess."
"Auntie Lola is the best!" Little Gabriel clung to Lola Gold’s neck, even winking cheekily at Yolanda.
Yolanda chuckled and shook her head. "You! You’d probably count money for someone even if they were selling you off."
"So what? If our lovely Princess wants to sell me, I’d package myself up, happily willing." Lola Gold thought to herself with amusement. She knew the little rascal was sweet-talking her to keep holding her, but she was glad to oblige—such an adorable baby, she could hold her forever.
"Let’s go, Caleb’s driving; he’s waiting for us outside." Using this distraction, Lola started walking ahead to lead the way, while casually chatting with Little Ella.
Yolanda couldn’t help but notice that the mention of Caleb brought a fleeting look of melancholy to Lola’s face.
"Wait for me!" Yolanda quickened her pace to catch up. "You two... Really planning to get married?"
"Yep, almost everything’s ready." Lola forced a small smile. "Only one week left—it shouldn’t change now."
"Are you sure about this?"
"Why?" Lola scoffed lightly. "What’s there to rethink? Marriage is just what it is..."
She exaggeratedly looked at Yolanda. "You can’t expect everyone to be as lucky as you, having a husband who’s so perfect, can you?"
"Cut it out!" Yolanda shot her a look. "Marriage is for a lifetime. I don’t know exactly what happened between you and Christopher Coldson, but I always felt that... the one you genuinely love—"
"Stop right there! Love? How corny!" Lola Gold cut her off solemnly. "Right now, I only want a steady marriage, a solid day-to-day life. I’m too old to be chasing thrills anymore."
Soon, the two of them got into the car.
Yolanda greeted Caleb first, "You must be Caleb, right? Hello, I’m Yolanda Greenwood. Thanks for coming to pick us up."
She turned to her daughter, "Ella, quickly say thank you to Uncle."
"Thank you, Uncle! Uncle’s car is so pretty; Ella really likes it!" The little girl’s voice was sugary sweet.
"Oh my, no wonder Lola always says she misses Ella. This kid is so well-behaved and adorable—way cuter than in the videos." Caleb gently patted Little Ella’s head. "Ella dear, are you hungry? Uncle will take you to eat something delicious."
Lola Gold chimed in from the backseat with Yolanda, "You must be hungry, right? Let’s grab some food first, then head back to my place."
"Sounds good." Yolanda smiled. "Thanks so much for this."
"No need for formalities with me." Lola Gold joyfully entertained Little Ella throughout the ride.
Yolanda gazed out of the window, feeling both unfamiliarity and an inexplicable sense of recognition. Not far away, on a massive electronic billboard, a financial interview was playing, showcasing a towering, handsome man with sun-kissed skin radiating strength.
Lola Gold followed her gaze and momentarily stiffened, but said nothing.
"Yolanda, how long has it been since you’ve been back?" Caleb broke the silence. "You seem like you don’t recognize the place anymore."
"It’s been years." Yolanda withdrew her gaze from the window. "The city’s changed a lot; I really don’t recognize much."
"Don’t worry. If there’s anything you don’t know, just ask me. I’m practically the Gray City Know-it-All." Caleb said confidently.
"Alright, for sure!" Yolanda stopped looking outside the window.
Over half an hour passed, and they still hadn’t reached the restaurant. It was nearing 2 PM.
Lola Gold asked, confused, "Caleb, where are you taking us to eat? Just find someplace nearby. Yolanda and Ella have been on the plane for so long; they’re already tired."
"Don’t worry; we’re almost there." Caleb glanced at her through the rearview mirror. "When we arrive, you’ll definitely be happy."
Lola Gold forced a smile toward Yolanda apologetically. Truthfully, she already wasn’t happy.
Today’s focus should have been feeding Yolanda and her daughter Ella after their long flight—but now Caleb had taken them across half the city just to go to some restaurant.
She could only silently hope the restaurant would live up to the effort.
