Chapter 354: Chapter 354 The Damned Person Is Always Him
When Cooper woke up again, it was already the next morning. The first thing he saw upon opening his eyes was Isabella Ross leaning against the edge of his bed.
He carefully got out of bed, eager to get out and check for any updates, but as soon as he moved, Isabella quickly woke up.
"Cooper, you’re awake? Are you feeling better?" Isabella immediately asked with concern.
"Mm, much better. I’m fine now. Mom, you should head back. I’ll ask Assistant Reyes to take you." Cooper quickly got out of bed, looking anxious.
Isabella grabbed his arm, looking as though she wanted to say something but hesitated.
"Mom, you don’t have to say anything. I’m not coming back until I find Yolanda." Cooper’s tone remained resolutely firm.
"Cooper, I’m not trying to talk you into coming back." After a night of reflection, Isabella had resigned herself to reality—Cooper wasn’t going to give up searching for Yolanda.
She softly held Cooper’s hand and gazed at her most prideful son with a pained expression. "I just want you to promise me one thing. As long as you agree, I won’t stop you no matter how long you search."
"What is it?"
Isabella sighed deeply. "You want to find her, you want redemption, but at the very least, you need to take care of yourself. Promise me that going forward, you’ll eat on time and sleep on time, okay? Otherwise, even if you find Yolanda, how will you take care of her? How will you convince yourself that you can give her happiness?"
After some thought, Cooper finally nodded. "Alright, Mom. I promise you, I’ll take good care of myself."
"Good boy, thank you." Isabella gently embraced Cooper once more. "Then I’ll leave now. Take care."
She turned and walked out step by step.
"Mom!" Cooper suddenly called out with a trembling voice.
Isabella turned back to look at him.
"Mom, I’m sorry. I’ve disappointed you." Cooper lowered his head, unable to meet Isabella’s gaze. "But if I don’t find Yolanda, I’m afraid I’ll never forgive myself for the rest of my life."
"I know, I understand." Isabella sniffled and fought back tears. "Take care of yourself. I’ll be waiting for you at home with Ella."
After Isabella left, the rescue team continued their round-the-clock work. Cooper was in somewhat better condition than before. He forced himself to eat one meal a day and sleep for four hours.
He feared collapsing again and missing any news about Yolanda, which would make his guilt unbearable.
A few days later, Richard Reyes returned to shore and received a call from Baruy.
"Hello, is this the client who commissioned the ’Island’ themed wedding jewelry?" A sweet voice came through the phone, clearly belonging to a customer service representative.
"It’s me," Richard replied, letting out a heavy sigh as a realization hit him.
"Here’s the thing, sir. The jewelry set was custom-designed by one of our designers. Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that the designer has tragically passed away, so the jewelry set..."
"I understand," Richard said immediately.
"Our apologies once again, sir. However, the designer left behind a set of unfinished design sketches. If you’re interested, we can provide them to you free of charge as a gesture of appreciation for your recognition of our designer’s work."
"Okay, thank you. I want the sketches."
Richard returned to share this development with Cooper. As it turns out, Cooper was the one who had commissioned the jewelry in the first place.
At the time, Cooper knew nothing about what was happening. He merely felt that he owed Yolanda a set of wedding jewelry. Over the years, he had been completely inadequate as a husband.
He had Richard anonymously place the order and specifically requested Yolanda to design it herself, intending in a roundabout way to give her some financial support. After all, Yolanda had just given birth and was raising Ella on her own; surely she could use the money.
Later on, Richard had nearly forgotten about the matter. But now, upon hearing that Yolanda had left behind design sketches, he thought of it as a gift.
As expected, upon hearing the news, Cooper immediately issued some instructions and prepared to go ashore to retrieve Yolanda’s sketches in person.
The person assigned to handle the handover was Sophie Taylor. When she saw Cooper, she froze for a moment.
"You’re...?" Sophie had met Cooper before, back when he was rumored to be the boyfriend of Melissa Greenwood, Director Greenwood.
"No," Cooper denied without hesitation. "I’m Yolanda Greenwood’s husband—or, to be precise, her ex-husband."
Sophie was slightly taken aback but wasn’t in the mood for gossip. Knowing about Yolanda’s ordeal, she had cried for days.
She asked no further questions, instead retrieving the sketches and placing them on the table. "These are the ones Yolanda left me before she went away. She said I should process them myself, but..."
She shook her head. "I couldn’t touch them. I simply printed out copies and left them untouched as they were. Mr. Coldson, take them as keepsakes."
Cooper flipped through the sketches one by one, staying silent for a long time.
"The things she said that day were so strange. I wonder why I didn’t notice she... was harboring suicidal thoughts?" Sophie sank once again into her grief.
Cooper gathered the sketches together and solemnly corrected her, "No, Yolanda wasn’t suicidal. She wouldn’t do that."
"Hm?" Sophie looked at the man opposite her in confusion.
Cooper didn’t elaborate further. He returned the sketches to Sophie. "Use these blueprints to help me finalize the pieces."
"Ah?" Sophie was surprised again. "But Mr. Coldson, these are only incomplete drafts. If the jewelry is made based on these, it might not... be functional to wear. Are you sure...?"
"I’m sure," Cooper replied, rising to his feet. "When the jewelry is finished, notify my assistant to pick it up. Thank you."
He turned and strode out of the café.
Richard was waiting outside. When he saw Cooper emerge, he immediately asked, "President Coldson, should we go back to the family estate? Your wife is there, and it’s been a long time since you’ve seen Ella. Don’t you want to..."
"No, back to the ocean."
Richard shook his head helplessly. He had thought this trip might prompt Cooper to linger for a bit, but he hadn’t expected the same outcome.
He had no idea when Cooper would finally move on. All he could do was pray that it wouldn’t be too late by then.
About a week later, Noah Coldson arrived. Seeing Cooper again, he almost failed to recognize his younger brother.
"Cooper, give up. Yolanda jumped into the ocean ten days ago. There’s no hope." He could hardly stand to watch anymore.
The man he saw before him was dark-skinned, dressed in filthy clothes, and bore none of the bearing of the once-imposing Patriarch Coldson. It was utterly unacceptable.
"I won’t give up." Cooper’s entire demeanor had become weathered, yet he had also visibly matured.
Noah furrowed his brows and gazed at the boundless ocean. "If Yolanda were still alive, seeing how much you care about her, do you think she’d be happy?"
Cooper said nothing because he knew hypothetical questions served no purpose now. They only reminded him of how blind and foolish he had been in the past. Ultimately, the one who deserved to die was always him.
"Cooper, I’m planning to leave," Noah said with a self-deprecating laugh. "Back to the U.S., or maybe some other place entirely. Either way, I need to get far away from here and forget everything about this place."
