Chapter 312: Chapter 312 Someone is Investigating Me
Cooper continued eating without saying a word, seemingly lost in thought.
"Let the child stay at my place for now," Isabella Ross spoke up first. "Once you two get married, then you can think about bringing him back."
"Mom..." Cooper seemed to disagree.
Isabella interrupted him, "It’s settled. You two should seriously consider having another child yourselves. With the Old Master gone, living alone in the old mansion, I need someone to keep me company."
"Mom, Melissa and I won’t be having children," Cooper said firmly.
Isabella glared at them angrily, then stood up with the child in her arms. "Suit yourselves. If you don’t want children, you still have Little May. Just focus on raising her well."
She left no room for negotiation, carrying the child directly back to her room.
Christopher let out a low chuckle. It was unclear whether it was schadenfreude or genuine agreement as he said, "I think that works just fine."
After the meal, Melissa went looking for Cooper again. "Cooper, Mom’s getting old, and your son is so young. I think it’s better for me to take him back."
"Don’t worry just yet, May is indeed still very young, and we’re not married," Cooper assured her. "Let’s talk about it after the wedding."
"But..." Melissa was still unwilling to give up.
"Alright, it’s decided," Cooper said with a hint of impatience. "Ever since Grandpa passed away, Mom’s been in a pretty bad mood. Having a child around makes me feel more at ease."
Melissa nodded reluctantly, forced to let it go for now.
"Why don’t you head back for now? I’ll have the driver take you. I’m going to check on Mom and the child." Cooper instructed, then went to Isabella Ross’s room.
The little one was already asleep, his two tiny fists clenched in a protective posture against his chest as though he were guarding himself.
Isabella spoke softly, "This child doesn’t seem to have any sense of security. Ever since he arrived, he’s always been so cautious."
Cooper frowned, "Do children really understand this much?"
"Why wouldn’t they?" Isabella shook her head. "Think about it—he started in his mother’s womb, then went to the incubator. The incubator was meant to mimic the womb, but to him, this place is completely unfamiliar now."
She added thoughtfully, "If his mother were here, it might be easier for him."
"Mom, you can’t give the child back to Yolanda Greenwood," Cooper immediately said, as if afraid Isabella might make her own decision and send the child back while he wasn’t around.
"I’m not foolish. Others might not understand your thoughts, but do you think I don’t?" Isabella gazed at her son affectionately. "Maybe, just maybe, I made a mistake back then."
"Mom, that’s not what I meant." Cooper’s tone remained neutral. "This is my son. He should stay with the Coldson Family, don’t you agree?"
Isabella nodded. "Don’t worry. As long as he’s here at the old mansion, I’ll make sure no one takes him away."
On her way back, Melissa received a call from the private detective she had previously hired.
"You’re saying someone’s investigating me?" Her heart instantly sank.
"Yes!" The other person responded in a lowered voice.
"Who is it?" Melissa asked anxiously. Who could it be? Could it be Cooper?
"Miss Greenwood, finding out who it is won’t be impossible..."
"Five million!" Melissa immediately threw out a number that would satisfy them.
Sure enough, the other party quickly replied, "Don’t worry, Miss Greenwood. I’ll do my best to find out who it is."
The call ended quickly. Melissa sat in the car feeling increasingly uneasy as she looked out the window. A deep sense of foreboding gnawed at her.
That same night, Noah Coldson returned to the old mansion at midnight, only seeing the child the next morning.
"Delivered back by Cooper?" He was startled, his eyes widening.
"And what if it was? What’s your point?" Isabella looked at him sternly. "Let me tell you this, if you ever dare to take this child away without my permission, I’ll go and bring both of Yolanda Greenwood’s children here myself!"
"Mom!" Noah exclaimed helplessly, stepping closer to peer at the little one. "He doesn’t look much like his sister."
Taking out his phone, he snapped a few pictures of the boy. "When Yolanda is discharged, can she visit him?"
"Of course, anytime. But she should also bring his sister along," Isabella responded greedily.
Noah chuckled. "Alright."
"Having a child is such a blessing. I’ll tell you, a home feels complete only with either an elder or a child present," Isabella said, her thoughts drifting to the Old Master Coldson, tears welling in her eyes. "With both a child and an elder, it’s a family truly blessed across generations."
"Come now, Mom, don’t be sad," Noah gently embraced her. "Grandpa’s watching over us from above. He’ll be happy to see this too."
"Hmm." Isabella quickly sniffled. She then asked, "Oh, did Yolanda pick names for the children?"
"She did—Gabriel and Ella," Noah replied immediately. "I think these names fit perfectly. Don’t go changing them."
Isabella agreed, thinking the Coldson Family already had everything. The children only needed safety and peace. But she added, "Still, it’s not up to us. I’ll need to check with Cooper. If he’s fine with it, then it’s settled."
Noah nodded before leaving for the hospital.
His first priority was to show Yolanda the photos. "These twins really share a connection; they even exited the incubator on the very same day."
Yolanda kept staring at the photos, flipping back and forth. "Why isn’t he smiling?"
"Not smiling—Mom says this little boy is naturally aloof, born with a serious demeanor," Noah joked, poking the little one on the bed a few times. "He’s nothing like our Ella, who’s just a little angel through and through."
Little Ella played along by giggling blissfully, her happiness evident.
Yolanda held the photos up to her daughter. "Ella, look—this is your brother, Gabriel. You used to live together inside Mommy’s tummy, isn’t that incredible?"
"Ah, ah ah..." The little girl babbled and even reached out to grab the camera, seeming as though she recognized Gabriel.
Lola Gold teased from the side, "They did share eight months together. They must be very familiar with each other."
"Yeah," Yolanda said, transferring the pictures to her phone. As she did so, her mood visibly darkened. She deeply wished the twins could stay together, but under the current circumstances...
Lola, sensing the shift, quickly shot Noah a look.
"Yolanda, don’t worry. In just a couple of days, you’ll be discharged," Noah said immediately. "Then you can bring Ella to visit the old mansion. Mom is excited to see her too."
"Alright." Yolanda’s expression softened a bit.
On the day she was discharged, Ivy Hall gave a long list of instructions. "Yolanda, you might be mobile now, but you still need to take care. If anything feels off, call me immediately."
"Alright, thank you, Dr. Hall. Goodbye, Dr. Hall."
On the drive back, Noah mentioned that he’d hired a postpartum doula who was likely waiting at the house already.
Yolanda declined, saying she could manage on her own.
"No way. Even if you can handle it, Ella needs someone to take care of her," Noah teased intentionally. "And Lola—for all her efforts—I still don’t find her reliable."
The group burst into laughter in unison.
